Should You Change for your Partner? feat. Jeannie Mai Full | Lovers and Friends Ep. 4

Should you change who you are in order to keep the lover you wanna be with? If your first reaction is "Hell to the No!" well...you're not alone. In this episode Shan interviews Emmy award-winning producer and host Jeannie Mai, who talks about how her marriage to Young Jeezy transformed her in ways that just didn’t surprise her, it also shocked the world! I so appreciate you, Jeannie Mai, for saying that you desire to learn your husband's culture and other cultures that you live around for your daughter and yourself. I too feel that way. I can honestly appreciate people in interracial relationships viewing this as important, because so many people do not! Love you both!

I adore Jeannie Mai and always have. She is genuinely a good person and I watched her "evolve" exactly like she said. I watched her glow up as a single woman and fall in love with a man who changed her world. She showed me how good of a dude Jeezy is. How grown man he is. She deserves it all. This is what is missing in the kind of gross conversation about "submissiveness" that seems to come up over and over again in podcasts. Submissiveness is not a character trait. It is a natural ease and calm that comes with two people who are compatible and choose to be the best person they can be in service of their relationship. Both people soften and grow and change if they care enough about the other person.

For me change is not that bad as long as the change is a positive and it doesn't go against your morals and ethics. I don't call it change I call it Evolve. Jeanie's definition is evolving to me. For me it's not a negative thing. For me it means I gave it careful thought which came from a mature place and made the best choice for me whether it's adding to my life, or not. I'm making my choices being fully present instead of straight off of emotion or ego. I loved his quote. I think it needs to be on a mug or a t-shirt.

Amazing video request: “How to Put Your Partner in Their Place Without Provoking Their Ego” For me in my relationships over the years, this has been truly difficult for me. I often resort to guilt tripping or yelling because I have a trigger from childhood of not feeling heard. Conflict resolution is such a must in relationship and to learn how to navigate would be a lifesaver! Thanks so much, Shan, for your insightful and thought provoking content as usual! This was a engaging conversation ❤

What an eye opening, beautiful conversation 💛 Something I have felt insecure about in my own relationship is how much my partner has changed since we have been together, especially since having our daughter. I had always felt like I was asking too much and should just love him where he is at... and I did love him then but I’m in awe and in love with the version of him that he has become. Witnessing a change in him inspires me to be a different version of myself. We are closer because of the changes we have made. I can feel the love between us growing and evolving and becoming deeper than it ever was before.

  • @Carlyon100

This conversation is about prioritizing self love and acceptance over societal expectations to procreate and assume specific gender/sex/status roles that can (potentially) block you on your own path to personal understanding, growth and fullfilment. So many people have been pressured to become a less than evolved version of themselves especially when where who what they are at the present moment serves others at the detriment of themselves. Therefore changing in a relationship, that is, being encouraged to improve/expand your self concept becomes the goal especially when you are partnered with someone who is just as invested in their own actualisation as well as your own, for the now and the future together or apart.

You mantioned that Jared has a wait to point out bad behaviour without making you feel like a bad person. I wish if you could expand on that in future episodes. Could you give us an example, a roleplay of a fictional situation. I think it's a valuable skill which a lot of people struggle with and would like to learn and integrate in their relationship. I think it would be really valuable for us to see how it's done, how to open that discussion while staying connected and not triggering out partner.

I believe the best types of love change you for the better. Growing in love for God and in love for myself has changed me tremendously. Inevitably for partnerships we will change as well. The problem that comes in is when the tweaks are not improving how you show up for yourself and the world. If the changes you’re being encouraged to make are genuinely harmful to you (physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually) and not just to your ego I think it one may not last and two it shouldn’t be done. People will manipulate you if you allow them. But not everyone has evil intentions behind their requests.

Changing your behaviors/habits is not the same as changing your personhood. If that doesn't make sense you don't know who you are. I personally believe people CANNOT change WHO they are but we all learn and adapt to the ups, downs and differences of life and environment.

My Fellow Intelligent Capricorn, one thing about us is that being real is literally our language. A lot of people love to be lied to but not us , we literally crave the truth from anyone that we involve ourselves with rather it’s relationships or friendships & family. Capricorn’s are literally the parent zodiac of them all. We don’t learn from other’s, they learn from us when it comes to deeper things beneath the surface. The way we think about certain stuff isn’t how a lot of people think. We’re often misunderstood a lot because of how deep we can be & get. All this to say is , when a Capricorn know they can start a future with someone they will naturally submit to their partner, we need a level of security in all area’s of our lives. ( Mentally, Physically, Emotionally, ) once we have found that we will become a different person for that person. A person that always lived inside of us but nobody ever got to see it because certain people don’t bring that side of us often. It’s very hard to get a Capricorn to trust you so if we do that means you have shown her that you can be her safe space. Capricorn’s make the world go around, everyone has a Capricorn in their life.

Interesting, the 2 capricorns I know (very close friends) actually trust people very easily. Very open, an open book in all senses that make me sometimes go like, hold on let’s get to know him/her a little more first. But indeed very deep convos and submissive to their partners
