How I Stopped Searching for Love in Lost People feat. Leah Lamarr

How do we fix our desire for relationships with people that will inevitably become broken. And how do we stop ourselves from aligning healthy with boring? That’s what we’re talking about on this episode of Lovers and Friends.
Attraction, whether emotional, physical, or psychological, is a complex process. It can be influenced by numerous factors, from biology to personal history. If someone finds themselves repeatedly attracted to individuals with certain undesirable characteristics (like the makeup of a fuckboy: charismatic but not reliable, fun to be around but not fun to be apart from because communication is not stable or when out of sight they’re unpredictable, they make big plans but don’t consistently make the small actions to move towards that goal especially when it comes to you, etc…), understanding the underlying causes and taking conscious steps to modify patterns of attraction can be beneficial. Here's a scientific, step-by-step approach:
Self-awareness and reflection
Next, Examine past patterns
Understand the biology
Cognitive-behavioral techniques
Increase self-worth
Expand your social circle
Educate yourself
Avoid idealization
practice mindfulness

She hit the nail on the head when she said butterflies are toxic. Growing up spiritual and being self aware, feeling butterflies is not a good sign. It takes “Trust your gut” from figurative to literal. Its definitely a warning sign.

Such a great episode! Currently on my own journey in putting my own self worth and needs first after a six year relationship with a narcissistic man. To be the one to tell them I wanted to leave and not wait it out any longer to allow them to continuously belittle me was my “ah-ha” moment filled with fear, anxiety, and uncertainty but I’m so glad I did. It’s very true that it’s an on going journey and just because you’ve learned something doesn’t mean it’ll stick forever if you don’t continuously practice them & to just hear Leah sharing all of her “Ah-ha” moments to recognizing and noticing patterns within her self, again just made me feel a little less alone in world! Thank you for such a great episode!

I had a massive crisis and almost walked away from my current relationship several times in the first year because I was SO CONFUSED about not feeling attracted to him in the way I was used to. I knew I wanted a gentle, respectful and kind partner, but all I knew was that high-adrenaline, toxic connection to associate with love. I wish there was more said about how misleading/unhealthy 'love at first sight' and attraction can be- thanks so much for this video! ❤

Love this pod/show! I usually listen on Spotify but I can’t review on there so adding my review here: I started listening about a year ago and it’s helped me a lot. The fertility episode helped me find my new egg freezing doctor after having a tough time with my first (shoutout to Dr. Nicole Brown at Kindbody!) and I sent this episode to my best friend because it was very timely. I’m in a relationship with a woman so would love more episodes about non-hetero relationships, i.e. featuring Jazz & Sua - they remind me a lot about my relationship dynamic and I think you’d dig deeper than their past interviews.

i think a big part of attraction is that you can't consciously decide WHAT specifically attracts you to someone. so even if its a bad fit for your life and your goals . . . and vice versa, even if someone would be a great fit there could be no attraction.

“Not like there’s anything wrong with that” after saying something that is clearly wrong. It is so important to be honest with what you think without trying to accomodate other people’s feelings. Hope that you can do this moving forward, rather than downplaying the effects that these type of relationships have.

It;s interesting the thing about butterflies being a sign that the interaction is potentially risky and I totally understand that. However it would be interesting to hear, and if there is a situation in which a person that has worked on themselves, can now interact with someone "good" for them: does it mean that butterflies will never happen? Are there situations in which there are "healthy butterflies". I'd be very sad to find out that there is no such things as that butterfly feeling with healthy relationships.

Here's the thing. The outcome of an event affects our memory of it. It's one of the 7 failures of memory. A study took a couple who's been together for a year and asked them to describe their first date. Then in 3 years asked them to do it again. Guess what the people who were still together did vs. The others?

    9 ай бұрын

@tshephangmotlogelwa384 I'm sorry. I thought it was obvious and instead it looks like I just expected y'all to read my mind. So for the people that were still together, they remembered the details of their first date even more fondly and the things they said that attracted them to their partner became magical or kismet from that date. The sequence of events and the informant details were relatively the same. Whereas the people who were no longer together, they said things like" i should have known then" or" that was a red flag from that but I just ignored it" sometimes they remember the same detail and sequence of events. However they once thought of as cute or quirky, now it was irritating. Finally depending on the length of the relationship, some folks forgot the details all together.
