I love my 90 crew cab with a 12 valve Cummins. My only complaint is noise! I have put sound deadening everywhere I can think of and its still wears on you after a few hours on the highway towing my camper. However it is so much more fun to drive than my 454. 18 mpg and I can pass anybody on the highway in crazy fast time!!! Best thing would be a 24 valve with a built P Pump.

Nice truck, great find.I'm going to give you my 2cents why you SHOULDN"T Cummins swap that, here goes: -You noted that the stock truck drove nicely, with A/C you could envision driving the family around in it for long trips. Find someone near you who can take you out in their Pre-94 Dodge with a Cummins. You will notice the Cummins is noticably louder/rougher. You may be OK with that, but ask your wife what she thinks about it(after 10 hours? It gave my wife headaches, and she was from the Philippines where diesel power is standard. I've driven the Cummins for work, in a newer chassis(Quieter, less NVH), and it will come to be a part of you, good and bad. I also had two GMT400s with 6.5 diesels, I don't suggest that route either. -The Cummins weighs 1300lbs(when mine was delivered, we weighed it). Thats a lot of work to do to the front suspension to hold that weight and get the ride/handling you have now. The stock truck has a TH400? Not ideal, but think what you would go with behind the Cummins. A 4L80 is going to need a standalone computer to run it. A BUILT TH200/700 could live behind the 454, but not the Cummins. Your best bet for the Cummins is a 47RH, last of the hydraulically controlled Mopar transmissions, and a good package, but you're going to spend $2k getting one built and ready to install behind your Cummins. -You got 10mpg towing a healthy load behind a 34yo carbureted smog motor. That's fairly sensational. You could TBI that motor and pick up power, drivability and at least 1mpg towing. You could pick up the electronic controls to run the 4L80(95 TBI) for more gains. You could TPI/Vortec it, which opens up a lot of power potential. Of course you could 8.0 or 6.0LS swap it. I think you could get 70-80% of the mileage/power you want to get from Cummins while staying with GM corp. gas drivetrains, at less than half the total cost! You do still have your new truck, and nothing is going to approach the MPG you get with that. -Having two tow rigs gives you choices. The big cab to haul family and a rig or two to shows. The new truck to daily and use for long forays. I think you have to put 10k+ per year, for a while, on the Cummins swap to come close to justifying the cost of the swap. I think you can do more fun/creative things with that time and $.

Yeah man, there are other ways to pick up more economy. You have to ask yourself, Is it needed? Considering how much a classic is usually driven. Regardless of mods, tasteful or not, this truck would be worth more to me as a survivor.

If the AC already has a slow leak then it will work for a few days and blow hot again. So run it until it is empty then swap out the AC compressor yourself. You're not really going to have to worry about releasing refrigerant into the atmosphere if she ran empty already. So hit up the parts store, change the compressor and fix the leak, then take it back to them for another recharge. Easy peasy, lemon squeasy.

The only issue I see with the truck is the gauge cluster surround has been changed. It's out of an 87-91(tbi) or 84-91 diesel truck since it has the 2 lights between the speedometer and fuel gauge. Carbeurated gas engines never got that.
