Should We Become Emotionless?

#philosophy #emotions
When we experience intense emotions, especially of the negative kind, there is a robust tendency to desire that they would cease to affect us. Whether it is anxiety, anger, stress, or despair the thoughts are usually the same, "if only I did not feel this emotion, then perhaps I would be better off," or "if only I were emotionless, then perhaps everything would be much better."
Today's discussion explores this question, should we become emotionless? In other words, should we attempt to forgo any emotion in order to prevent the distressing sensations that accompany these emotions from arising? While this idea might be appealing at first glance, it inevitably becomes fatally flawed when it is scrutinized more closely. Emotions are a key facet of our being and many of the values, goals, and ambitions we possess would not carry as much significance if we lacked a capacity for emotions.

After decades of dealing with very difficult emotions, I've learned two main things: 1) Your thoughts have much more power over your emotions than you may realize. Controlling your thoughts is a powerful tool in keeping your emotions in check. 2) Emotions are meant to be temporary. However, emotions sometimes linger because they get you stuck. The thing you want to do the least (such as dealing with a problem head-on or doing a rigorous exercise) is often the exact thing you need to do to get yourself unstuck from paralyzing emotional suffering.

Emotions are an unavoidable part of being human. I would argue that even many animals have emotions. For me, after decades of experiencing intense emotions, I find that the key is to understand how to control them with some logic, reason and perspective. Also, it must be understood that emotions are necessary to drive many important functions in life such as inspiration to create and motivation to carry out tasks. Emotions can be an intense roller coaster of highs and lows, but controlling the intensity of the waves by controlling thoughts with the philosophical quotes of the stoics is useful and effective. Also, understand that nothing, good or bad, lasts forever.

I concur. They are a vital part of our existence but they must be tempered, otherwise they will cause us to lose control of ourselves. Thank you for sharing your insights!
