Shortwave numbers station with digital data (17.48 MHz)

Received November 21st, 2015 at around 6:30 PM EST, on about 17.48 MHz. Likely coming from Cuba. Likewise the digital data is almost definitely also encrypted, either digitally or via an old-fashioned cipher system.

You are correct. That is the HM01 number station from Cuba.
That's how Cubans dial-in to watch KZread.

The data can be decoded using an application called “DIGTRX”. It's basically just encrypted text, and it's debatable as to what the intended purpose or who the target is. The station HM01 is operated by Cuban intelligence. You can find out more at priyom dot org slash number-stations (click the "digital" tab to find HM01)
I've heard a numbers station that uses that same voice, but didn't have the digital modulation in between. Just so weird.
It would be interesting to know how much compressed data can be transmitted over shortwave.

DRM supports bitrates of up to about 30 kbps on a 20 KHz channel. *Edit* I'm actually wrong, it's 72 kbps for 20 KHz! That's enough for FM quality mono audio with few compression artifacts using xHE-AAC or Opus.

I often hear what sounds like computerized code on SW radio but nothing like this! I think there's software that can decode things like this, it might be interesting to know what it is.

I can get this in Dalton, GA with good reception on 11.53 and 11.635 MHz.

i have thatr same radio but busted the antenna. i have an antenna thats about a good 8 inches longer that doesnt fold down. reception s a little better with the bigger antenna.

it's going way to fast to be actual Morse code, at least, too fast to be intelligible. That and the fact it's using what sounds like at least two tones, it is more likely to be the sort of thing you would find if you played a computer game cassette tape on a standard stereo. Although this is likely encrypted

I've heard a few things like this while flipping stations on my SDR. Curious as to if there's software you can download to decode those data streams.

There are programs available that could decode RTTY as well as JT65, Morse code, and various data transmission modes.

GNU Radio could be able to decode these streams, but you'd have to know what format they're encoded in.
