Shoe repair resole boots with freecycled winter tire
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Since there was a lot of questions about the recycling of tires, we have made another clip showing retired shoe repair Joseph Mahoney how he turns scrap tires into winter boots.

Was it polyurethane sealant? Because I'm an Ex glazier/ Aluminum joinery trade. I was always using Sikaflex or similar to repair or even sealed my boots to last longer. Especially on muddy jobsite. I just did my mongrel steel capped boots last night. My sole was completely perished on the heel with only fragments holding it together. I pumped about good 10 mm in . Also around the boot. Reformed the sole back to original heel shape as I have a bad ankle. My left shoe always wears out on a taper. I hope mine work as well as yours. Cheers from Australia 🙂👍👍👍
In Mexico my dad used to make sandal soles(huaraches) out of old tires! Definitely smart if and practical. Fuck all the negative. Good shit bro!
I employ the services of a local shoe repair shop. I drag my foot bad from a surgically repaired knee that the surgery was not successful. The gentleman who owns the shoe repair uses Goodyear soles on my shoes because of the extreme wear. Those soles last 3-4X longer than any original sole, even on good quality shoes. This really looks like about the same thing. A great shoe repair man can be a life saver. My bad knee makes that leg a bit shorter. He has measured me and shims the sole to make my walking motion more natural. This makes my back, feet, hips and legs hurt a lot less. Thank you and him great work fellas!

Ah man, this takes me back when I was a kid learning from the boot maker across my house. A skill long forgotten. Wow
I never thought of this. Top idea! I always repair my steel capped boots with Sikaflex 11FC ( fast curing) polyurethane sealant. I just did my old boots yesterday evening with Seal and flex polyurethane sealant. Construction sealant/adhesive. I hope they hold up ? With Sikaflex? It went off like tyre rubber . Amazing stuff. I would love to set up a business in Australia in shoe repair. Nobody does it! My mongrel steel capped boots were $200 AUD. On special too. Most comfortable steel cap boots ever. Tyre tread? Mmmmmm🤔🤔🤔👍👍👍. Top job sir! Thanks for the tutorial! I'm going to do it your way next time. I even have my father's shoe shine kit. His shoe repair gear Including shoe horn.
Working up bush in Kenya, 1978, I watched a local make some complete shoes from old tyres. He had some adhesive, an old machine hacksaw blade a sharpening stone and some water. Used the water to help sharpen the blade on the stone until it was razor sharp and kept it wet while cutting the rubber. Poor, no money, great long life shoes and a smile I can remember to this day.

Preparation of the boot that was not shown is that you have to remove any remaining tread pattern off of the sole of the boot. The sole has to be completely flat so that the Barge Cement has the greatest contact area. We normally apply two applications of Barge Cement to the sole of the boot and the tire tread and then let each layer dry completely before we bond them together. Some have mentioned that his method of cutting the sole looks dangerous because he is pulling the blade towards himself. If you watch how he cradles the boot against his chest then he has better blade control and is unlikely to slip and cut himself as he steadies the arm holding the knife against his chest wall. Also the sharper the knife the safer the cutting action because less pressure is needed to pull the knife through the material. I like to use a solid blade knife that I have sharpened just for this activity as it is safer than using a simple utility knife that offers a new blade tip by simply snapping off the duller end of the blade. I have seen those break unexpectedly when using them cutting around the toe section where there is a lot of lateral force applied to the blade.
I first saw tyre tread soles on my brothers scandals over thirty years ago. Thought it was an awesome idea way back then, still think it’s an awesome idea and surprised there aren’t more around. Don’t forget to do a burnout to sticky up the tread if you’re doing any running though 🤣😂🤣 Great job!
I think is awesome great job. I will like my boots done too. I wonder where he lives? Our planet needs more people like this man. 💪👌

In 1971 a friend of mine came back from Vietnam he said I brought you a gift from Nam. It was a pair of sandals made from old truck tires the soles were made from the tread and the straps were were made from old inner tubes they resembled flip-flops! I wore those things for years. They were really comfortable. They're still around here somewhere!

Nice work. When I was a young wanna be hippie I had a pair of Jesus boots ( sandals) with a tire tread sole all leather and made from a tracing of my foot. They were pretty cool back in 71.
I think a lot of people up in Alaska would love that idea .. whenever I've seen pgms with their boots they always seem to be about 3 inches thick.... this would save them a few shillings. Nicely done.
Well ✅ done. You will inspire others to do the same. Looking forward to your next video sir.
Wow that's a great skill to know as a prepper. Thanks!

🔵 I feel the same way, I wore cowboy boots most of my life and every 6 months I would have them resoled, the only problem was they could only be resoled once!...and after that there wasn't enough upper to tuck around to sew to the soul, so I had to get a new pair of boots every year, if my shoe repairman had known this technique I would have had this done when the boots were new, my last old pair of Frye boots would have given me many more years of service with soles like this.
Excelente, yo hago algo parecido pero sólo en la suelas de mis botas, les pongo el caucho de llantas y lo fijo con clavos. Tengo 2 años con esas botas usandolas a diario y no se desgasta para nada las suelas.

My best friends dad was an immigrant worker who wore sandals he fashioned from an old tire. He worked in the farm fields picking vegetables wearing them until they wore out.
I had a neighbor who repaired cemi tires do mine in 1982. I wore the leather out before I wore out the sole. Plus they were regroveable.
I've seen cowboy boots with this tire sole and they looked sick
Why do I love this so much!
Good idea making soles from used tires. Sounds perfect.
This practice is used in many countries since the early 1930's , does not cost a lot and heavy duty, not necessarily winter tires but any used tire. In Asia, Africa, South America , Australia and others
You will not slip on the ice with those boots. what an idea.
Great great uncle was shoe maker in Mexico he would create some art work with hand stitched custom fitted shoes boots for the whole town way cool life
Awesome. Very common method in Africa... We have sandals made from used tyres...
Very very Great job!
I can remember a guy saying he grew up during the depression and this was a common solution people used. They’d find old shoes and boots and resole them with tire rubber. It’s pretty genius and super functional. I’m guessing you’d have to sand the existing sole down to give it a nice surface to adhere to. I’d use that PL5k construction adhesive that shit is unbelievably strong.

Excelente trabajo.
The Blizzak tires were terrific on a car a girlfriend had. Others were slipping and sliding and her car drove like it was on ice treads. Sadly, the tires wore down quickly when not on ice and snow...definitely (IMO) not an all season tire. I can see where they would work well on the boots though, great idea.
Great idea!
My boots have a slight step up to where the heel is... I wonder what this guy would do with that? Otherwise a great video of human resourcefulness... And hi from Brighton UK. Xx

Wonderful idea might even try it myself for a couple pair of Cabela boots. But do you not have to prep the actuals sole of the shoe? I mean most people bringing their shoes to get resoled when I get down to the bare minimum do you just leave what's left of that Soul their ? do you try to remove it? or just clean it up so the glue sticks? Thanks for your time
