My step dad, who tragically passed away in 2020, was an incredible chef. He would pick up side gigs for restaurants setting up food for commercials. One "trick" was setting up a McDonald's Big Mac. He said that he spent over an hour just strategically placing each and every sesame seed on the bun.

I worked in photography. Food stylists were amazing. After they had added chemicals and trickery to the food, we had to be very careful how we disposed of it. If a homeless person was looking for food in a Dumpster, they could be poisoned by eating this "styled" food. Other tricks for catalog shots were putting marbles in soup, so that the vegetable would rise to the top and looked more hearty. Towels were wrapped around Styrofoam forms to create a fluffy looking stack of towels. We assembled ceiling fans, put them on the floor, used transparent fish line to lift up the dangling switch that would turn it or off. And by adjusting the lighting a bit, the fan sitting on a white background on the floor appeared as though affixed to the ceiling. OMG. So many tricks. 😅

A filthy bum who raids dumpsters to find his dinner should reasonably expect to be poisoned. It's completely unreasonable that any person or a business would be expected to ensure their garbage is safe to eat.

I had a long career in advertising and one of my clients was a very well known hair coloring company. Legally - at least I was told this - was that the models had to have had their hair actually colored by the product. The models wouldn't ever allow anyone to monkey with their gorgeous hair so they would allow a 'rinse' of color to be applied. It was then immediately washed out.

Models in clothing ads are often studded with clothespins on the off-camera side. Stylists "tailor" the mass-produced clothes with pins and clips to make them fit perfectly on models.

There was an actress in the 1950’s that had thin hair, about half the hair follicles one normally had. She fixed her own hair and used little pads of cotton ( pulled off a big chunk). Each curl, she would pad up and look gorgeous, you’d never know she had such thin hair….

My parents took me to the Universal Studios Tour not long after it began operating. One of the studio sets we got to see was for the show "Columbo". The guide turned on the overhead stage lights and explained that they get very hot to stand under. He reminded us that Columbo at that time was often seen eating an ice cream cone and he asked the audience if we had any idea how they kept the ice cream from melting in the heat. After we gave up he explained that it was colored plain mashed potatoes instead of ice cream and that Peter Faulk had to act as though it tasted as delicious as ice cream. As expected, all of us kids in the audience were like, "YUCK!"

I had a brochure for my charter boat company commissioned many years ago. It featured a picture of two tropical drinks on one page. To get the ‘illusion’ of condensation slowly dripping down the frosted glass, the food stylist used Karo syrup. Ice cubes were plastic. That is the only thing that would hold up under those hot lights. You can’t always use the real thing when doing a photo shoot.

I’ve worked on more food and car commercials than I can count. You’re spot on with the food commercials, nothing shot is even approaching edible by the time the food stylists are done with it. The smell is often nauseating, but to tell the truth we’re being paid well enough to overlook that little item. Sadly, the Blackbird became available after I got out of the biz. Also, in McDonald's defense, the burgers you get are also wrapped up in paper, often put in a bag with other items, sometimes sitting under a heat lamp (though I think there's a max they allow food to sit, and it's not very long if I recall). The wrapping itself will smush everything a little, causing the height difference you see. And since it's hot and moist, the steam inside the wrapper will further distort things. If it was served on a plate, a McDonald's sandwich would look very different.

I would have never guessed that a 'food stylist' was an actual job. But I guess I have them to blame for every time I've worked in a restaurant and someone has complained that the food 'doesn't look like the picture'. False advertising? For real, I wonder if these companies can actually be sued for false advertising for some of these 'deceptions'.

All humans (well, most of us anyway…lol) automatically shun food that looks like it might be harmful or make us sick through feeling disgust at the sight. It’s a protective mechanism we’ve evolved. I once tried this out on campus for a college project by making 4 batches of brownies: 2 were normal square brownies and 2 were clumped and shaped to look like poo. I gave them away for free. The square brownies were gone in less than an hour. But I could only get ONE person to try the non-square shape! I had sooo many poo brownies left over 😂

As a food photographer, false advertising is always a topic of conversation and something to be enthusiastically avoided. If we are selling a roast beef sandwich, it must have all of the actual ingredients, measured out in the exact proportions the restaurant instructs it's cooks to use. Does it take two hours t make this sandwich - yes. If we are selling ice cream, it can't be mashed potatoes. However, if we are not selling the whip cream on top of the ice cream, a substitute such as shaving cream is used.

the car thing makes sense it's a risky business what if someone on a real road I'm hinting at the common Karen speeds down the road straight into it which also reminds us that as soon as you drive you're McLaren for example its worth goes down instantaneously making it worth nothing a few minutes later .just because they look good doesn't always means it is good plus if you break the car the parts make up more money than the car it's self when you first bought it .

Ok it needs to be said. In the US all food in ads is real. It’s illegal to not showcase the real product up for sale. You must use the actual product that you are selling to make your ad. Now for the food industry that doesn’t mean you can’t make portions seem larger or under cook the food. Under cooking the food makes it look larger. Also not wrapping a burger keeps the bun from getting squished. Food companies got fined for using mashed potatoes instead of ice cream. Now as far as movies go that shit is about 50% fake as the food would be inedible anyway for many shoots. Some things the stars drink is just colored water. Much of the food is just sugar molded to look like the real thing. Look it up it’s actually fascinating.
