Shiren has been a recent joy for me. As someone who grew to love roguelites, especially after my youth was spent banging my head at the wall of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, I have a respect for Chunsoft spending all these years perfecting their craft to bring something truly special in Shiren 6. Its so hard to see all my japanese subs going ham at the game, I don’t want to spoil myself too much on it but I can’t help but peek to try to listen to the music. I also have to give a massive shoutout to sharksnack and his team’s efforts at translating the Shiren games we didn’t get. Shiren 2 is such a beginner friendly game, and its postgame is addictive. And from what I’ve been seeing from everyone, 6 looks to be just as beginner friendly while also hiding some truly insidious things. And I won’t lie- half the fun of Shiren is seeing what kind of nonsense happens to me that results in either a near death experience or sends me back to the village outright. Special mention goes to the moment where the game made me fall in love with the possibilities: A Tiger Tosser threw me into an enemy, which triggered a Log Trap. I get nailed, hit the enemy and then retriggered the trap twice more before it finally failed. I almost died, but I also had this stupid grin on my face.

Haha 😄 yes, that's it - what kind of nonsense will happen? It's a shame those older Japan only Shirens didn't come West - but it looks now like the franchise finally might fuller sails here. 👍

Awesome to see your passion for the Shiren series. I played the DS version many years ago. I've played all the games since then. Thanks for showing off the art book for the PSP. I have the steam version, so it was cool to see the special edition box contents. Thanks for the video. Cheers.

Nice to see the love for Shiren. The entry on Vita is one of the best games I've ever played. I co-wrote a trophy guide for it years ago, which was my entry into guide writing. This upcoming Shiren game is easily in the top 3 games I'd want to play on Switch if I had one. If that's you, that's awesome. I so admire writers of game guides ... oof, what a labour of love! Also, pgann is apparently a SaGa fan. 🙋🏻‍♀ As to the Murder on the Marine Express reference: yes, I do know. A subscriber here sent me some screenshots last year (I'm pretty sure I also mentioned it on Twitter ... it was such a lovely humorous surprise). I'm not sure what you mean by "tweeted screenshots". I go through my Twitter feed pretty carefully each day and didn't see anything. If you tried to DM me, that probably didn't work bc I only allow DMs with mutuals. @@Food4Dogs Pgann was the other author I wrote the guide with. We decided to post it under his account. My name is in the banner and credited under the start of the "Resources" section. I got started making the guide and resources myself, then he joined and did a lot of touching up to the formatting and general presentation as well as helping fill out the monster and item tables. It was a lot of fun! I posted the screenshots and included your @ username, which I thought would notify you of it. I don't use Twitter much so maybe I didn't do it correctly. I have seen your Twitter post now, and re-checked my timeline around Jan. 23 - and it's not there. 😮 People tell me Twitter is behaving erratically; this is the first time I've experienced something like this. You did the name tagging perfectly correctly - it *should* have appeared in my Twitter feed/timeline. I'll be sure to consult the Shiren trophy guide bc I have just been hooning around in Shiren all these years, basically, and I'm sure a more focused approach would yield more success! 😁

My first introduction to the Shiren games was through SNES drunk's video where he talked about the SFC game. I'm glad to see that the series is still going strong! The only other mystery dungeon games were the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon titles for the GBA and DS and Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon for the PS1.

Made Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice my first one of the series last week. I've played pleny of PokémonMD back in the day. And I'm glad you're sharing everyone's excitement over Dragon's Dogma 2. Only a couple more days. Love your channel so much. Kind regards from Europe

I'm so happy you talked about one of my favourite series of all time. I also can't wait for "Shiren The Wanderer 6: The Mystery Dungeon Of Serpentcoil Island". This will not be the first time the Shiren series makes the jump to 3D, however. In 2000, the series went 3D with "Shiren the Wanderer 2: Shiren's Castle and the Oni Invasion", on the N64. Then, in 2008 (2010 in the west), "Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer 3 - The Sleeping Princess and the Karakuri Mansion" on the Nintendo Wii and Sony PSP was also a 3D-based game. Then with part 4 and 5, Chunsoft went back to 2D sprite-based games, so it seems they're going back and forth a bit between 2D and 3D tech.

Thank you Britta for the discussion on Shiren, I actually bought the serpent coil island episode that just came out and I am enjoying it thoroughly, it toook some time to get used to the different gameplay but in the end I must say that its a little jem and a masterpiece of gamplay and proceduraly generated level design. Its actually easy to play just for a while, great saving system, and at the same time very addictive, has got quite an amazing balance if you invest a little time on it and its quite complex. thanks for the shiren gameplay Britta. it's been a while since i last played a shiren game. i had a ps vita tv as well and i played dice of fate on there but never beat it. good thing a new one is coming.

I haven't bought a copy yet - but I will soon, really looking forward to it. There has been so much else going on ... I've got a big backlog not just of games, but also of video projects piling up.

i didnt know anything about shiren or dragon's dogma but now youve got me checking out both!

I remember watching a shiren the wanderer trailer for a 2010 wii game. I loved the music.

Yes, that was the third Shiren game, released in Japan in June 2008 and in North America February 2010.

Kinda off topic, but as a huge fan of the first game, I would LOVE to hear you talk more about your experience with Dragon's Dogma. Such an underrated game.

Yea ... I had contemplated it, believe me. But it's a tall order. There are people out there so much more knowledgeable than me about the game, who have done terrific work (special guides etc.) - I'm not sure I can say anything worthwhile. I wouldn't really call DD under-rated, bc the people who *know* the game know that it is incredibly good. I guess the problem then is that not enough people got to know that first game. 😅 Maybe the release of DD2 will change that .. But it's obviously an important game to me, and will no doubt pop up in one of my future videos about what I'm playing.

Thank you so much for this video! I am really excited to the new game. Unfortunately I don't see many people talking about the game. Nintendo didn't show it at Nintendo Direct in September didn't help (they show it in the japanese version. Same thing for the ShinChan 2). Your video will help a lot to show this series to many people.

The Shiren 5 in 2D is so beautiful. I am a bit scared the 3D don't look so good. But we will see... In Europe the game will have a physical edition to everyone. But apparently all the countries will have to deal with the big german warning sign. Oh well... One good news about Shiren 6 is that, in Japan, the game come in top 2 in eshop. Did better that Ace Attorney 2nd Trilogy. Hope it sell well!

Torneko sounds great - and it was co-developed by Spike Chunsoft! But it's not listed any longer on the PS store 😕 and I doubt I could find a physical copy.

absolutely loved this video. recently a new game called Sea of Stars released, it has very similar style and aesthetic to this one, but is more of a turn based game. you should look into it! great 2D visuals and soundtrack.

I posted a link to the patch file on your discord dms when you're ready since KZread will nuke it if I put it here. it should save some time looking around for it. I've been playing the game since I found it and loving it! I'm just quite excited because now all the numbered entries are in English now to fully play! since shiren 2 got a translation awhile ago as well a couple years back

I enjoyed Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and a niche game for the Sega called Fatal labyrinth. I will probably get this new game but I gotta say I am not as resistant to frustratingly difficult games

You know, I've been playing Shiren pretty happy go lucky 😄 and I've had few disasters. If you know Pokémon MD and just take a few precautions (like storing special gear in warehouse and money in bank) then it's not a really big deal. The learning curve is also well handled.

Im the weirdo that discovered the mystery dungeon games because of Torneko the Dragon Quest spinoff.
