There is of course an awful lot more that could be said on this (to me: fascinating) topic. How Gaijinworks later had another go at producing a special print run - this time a limited edition of Summon Night 6 - and how this contributed to the company's problems. However, I believe this story has been covered already quite well on KZread. Thus my decision to limit myself to Class of Heroes, and try to keep the video length reasonable. Thank you, as always, for your interest! A note on Variant D: it did spike in price temporarily, especially when the PS3 online shop closure was first announced by Sony, but 'normalised' since then back to its original value. Summon Night Swordcraft Story is one of my favorite games of all time for the Gameboy Advance. There are even fan groups on the internet who made a fan patch that translates the sequels to english.

This is such an interesting topic, thank you for covering it, Britta! I had no idea about any of this (I'm not particularly into dungeon crawlers myself), but it's almost a little sad that Gaijinworks' whole limited run scheme didn't seem to work out, mainly because the game didn't end up being remarkable enough, it seems. But wow, they almost would have deserved for it to work for the quality booklet alone. :)

I used to play Class of Heroes all the time on my PSP and years later saw Class of Heroes 2G and thought about getting it, but I ultimately didn't. I never knew there were so many variants of the game though so this was interesting!

I remember playing Class of Heroes for PSP a lot! I never knew it even had a sequel. I remember it being really good. This PS vita and Ps3 integration is very innovative, even though it's over a decade old at this point!

I picked this game up from the original preorder so I am not sure about the variant. Its in storage but it is interesting to see how this got reprinted. Just an example of how things get reprinted. This even happens to limited run game alot especially titles that aren't to niche.

I really enjoyed Class of Heroes 1 on PSP. I missed the second one. But I'm also old enough I remember as a child playing Wizardry 1 and 2 on the Apple II, and later on the NES. I remember the PSP/Vita linkage being promoted, but never saw any games that used it. But I did (and still do, rarely) use a PS3 controller to play my PSP Go on my TV.

Wonderful video! I purchased my copy sometime in 2018 or 19 at a local game shop. I was told it was the C variant and paid around $80 USD. It wasn't until about 2 months ago I learned it was the D variant. The store owners didn't mean to overprice it. They spent nearly 20 minutes trying to determine the variant at the time.

Ah, that's really interesting - but also a little disappointing for you, I suppose. I have to say Gaijinworks did not make it easy for people to determine clearly and easily which variant was which. I'm not surprised a store owner struggled with this convoluted issue.

I just heard that this is coming to the switch in "early 2024" (including a western release too). It seems to be part of the recent trend of remasteing some of the older games though it's surprising some of the games that are popping up as this is a niche one like you said. I really like Etrian Odyssey so I am excited eventhough I hadn't heard of this game before.

Yeah the question about what makes a game rare and expensive is always interesting and depends on so many factors. For the people who want to "invest" in video games: maybe you'd rather stick to the stock market :D

Class of Heroes always seemed interesting because their 'dwarves' are so different from other dwarves in media. I didn't know they had such a good idea for PS3/PSvita support. Feels very nintendo-y.

Enjoyed this one - not a game I had ever seen before

It was cheaper for publishers to print a box cover and make a disc than pay extra to Sony to have it on PSN store front. Sony had all the say over Pricing before PlayStation became its own division of Sony. Indi games still had to pay Sony to have their games on PlayStations platform. Today it's a big gamble if developers make any money from their games. PSN's fee is $25,000

I have a question: Ive seen this for a decent price on Ebay and was wondering... As someone who might not be into this type of game/rpg... would I enjoy it? I really wanma get it because I like the localization company and my first games of theirs was Summon Night 5 and 6. I also use my ps3 or psp more than vita or ps4.

It's really hard to say. I honestly don't think it's quite up there with the level of the Summon Nights. I struggled with some of the mechanics which weren't quite what I love in JRPGs (like endless traps, poison etc. in dungeons). But maybe I just got off on the wrong foot, I dunno. It's really impossible to predict whether a game will click for someone; heck, I have trouble sometimes working that out for myself! 😁

I get that a lot. People arrive by complete algorithm fluke, and some stay and become regulars.

People should remember that just because something is rare does not make it valuable. How much demand is there really for the game if it got a reprint of say 5000 copies in 2016 but 7 years later is still available for purchase new from the same website? Not much and the people pushing the variant angles are speculators at best (or worst). People should not use video games to "invest in". Buy the game if you want it in your collection or to play but hoping it will shoot up in value in time are going to be disappointed.

The music gave me good memories of my time in Spiritfarer. Have you played it, and if you have, what are your opinions on it?

Hi CuCuz, welcome and thank you for your input! This is super interesting. 👍 Do we know whether the variants are numbered separately, or all together? 🤔 Does that mean there are 3,000 copies of variant A, or that you have no. 2878 of the combined A, B & C print run? Do you happen to know?

I have Variants A & C that I pre-ordered from them. Mine are numbered 1485 for my A, and 1399 for my C. So I suspect a minimum print of 1500 per variant. If only I could remember where I put my PSP copies of the game. EDIT: Do we actually know if each variant was stickered individually? Since the stickers are on the outer plastic seal they could have just stickered them as they shipped in no particular order. So I could actually see A, B & C being as low as 500 each if that is the case. But 1000 each does also make sense if they were stickered as they shipped.

Oh goody, that is fascinating info - thank you so much! 👍🏻 We do not know anything about how the serial numbers were stickered (I haven't found any documentation on that or other issues, it's all very secretive). It's interesting that your two numbers are rather close together; this would argue for "continual stickering" regardless of variant (and that could mean potentially only 1,500 copies!). But ... my gut feeling says the numbers 1485 and 1399 being close (but not super close) does not reflect cross-variant stickering, and each variant likely had 1,500 (or more???) copies printed. Also: That would bring the complete A/B/C print run to around 4,500 copies. Which kinda tallies with the later Variant D re-print (which seems to also be around that number).

I have Class of Heroes on my PSP.

I thought I had hallucinated this title. It DOES exist after all!

These games are Independent Developer Games. Indi games for short. I find new ones all the time. Most I pay under $10 for. I buy the survival and simulation games. Most are a lot of fun to play. New Indi games are out for PS5 that I play on. Most will never get noticed like Class of Heroes. It's more of a testing ground for new game developers.

It's more interesting to me as rare 1st person dungeon crawler on ps3.. Which are few and far inbetween.. since at that time they were picking up speed on DS/3DS and Vita (although less famous til later on Vita).. Overall the Ps3 was a funny system.. NISA and IF we just making games that could be on the Wii.. The Jrpgs were sparse till the back end and were sharing multiports with 360 til 2011.. Towards the back end it had some gems.. If I wasn't a Squaresoft/Enix/Square-Enix publisher collector/mystery dungeon collector atm.. I'd dive in to ps3.. (getting ps3 GuidedFate/Awakened next month XD) lol.. or 1st person dungeon collecting.. which I have about 5.. ^^;;

I like games that customising trumps graphics.. Cladun is a good example.. It's concept is simple.. but it's got a metric tonne of customising for your pty.. Z.h.P has that with how you build the character into a superhero :)
