Collecting Video Games :: Introduction

Ойындар

This video is intended as a springboard for a series looking at my video game collection for PS2/3/4, Vita and 3DS/DS, focusing on the issues, problems and strategies to be aware of if you're becoming serious about building a collection.
I've had numerous requests over the years from subscribers for me to "show" my collection.
Well, I always felt kind of embarrassed about doing that - in case it might look like "showing off". But now I feel I have found the right topic around which to organise showing games from my collection: to exemplify and analyse the points I want to discuss! 😃
Background music is from the OST for Final Fantasy XIII.
Time Stamps:
00:00 Intro
02:25 Plushie Boguin
04:00 Tackling the Topic
05:00 Console Platforms I will cover

I never was a fully-trained professional teacher; I only occasionally stepped in as what's called a "supply" teacher here to fill an urgent short-term gap (usually language teaching). I think I mention in various videos jobs I've had (true to form, I've never stuck to one thing 😁 - I like variety).

I'm the 2nd collector. I grew up in a time where video games were physical, box PC games, cartridges, discs. I love to discover games & try out new games seeing if I like them or not. The ones I do I keep & plan on sharing with others (when my time comes/if I can't play them anymore). I don't need any figures, or other items, I just want the games. I also collect Switch & PS4 games, trying new games on Switch & if I like them (& they have a PS4 version), I'll post gameplays of the PS4 version on my channel. I used to collect & use strategy guides. I don't anymore, but it was fun. I even got one for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 from Half Price Books, & someone left some pages of story, possibly a fan fiction, in it. It was the strangest thing. I always thought the people who ran that store would check every page of the guides to make sure nothing like that would happen & that it wasn't dirty or torn up.

Such a nice video to find! It is certainly a harder hobby than most assume. I have spent many a days searching or trying to find certain items only to never come to pass either because of price or my location. I really am missing a network of fellow collectors, it sounds like this would be a big boon. If anyone is in the Chicagoland area we should connect! I have gone through many a collection phases and have settled on video games. I have a collection of Amiibo figurines that I have moved on from.

Watching this was a delight, but the part on strategy guides hit me extra hard. I happen to love guides like this, and honestly I think my start for love of these came from the old SNES game, Earthbound. It came with the guide when it released in stores and it was wonderfully colorful, with "fake" news paper articles and travel guides. The fandom made a guide in the same vein for Mother 3. Thank you for not only the video, but for getting me to revisit those wonderful memories

A good way to get into collecting in this current age is first testing the waters with your interest. More specifically, purchase a the digital copy on sale of a game you are interested in, but not quite sure you want to collect. If you enjoy your experience with said game, then go ahead with the purchase of a physical copy. If it is a series/franchise, do essentially the same thing. But by that point, if you have already done what I suggested, then you will likely know if you are willing to invest however much money into said line of games in the series/franchise. This method of caution allowed me in the recent decade to determine where my collecting priorities take precedent.

What a great Video! It’s always a pleasure hearing you talk about the things that you’re passionate about. Game collecting is definitely something I’ve been quite into for a couple of years now, and you’ve certainly been a great inspiration for me in that regard, specially when it comes to the 3ds, which i started collecting for not so long ago. I also can relate a lot on the matter of being in a region where is much more complicated getting access to certain games. That obviously makes importing almost unavoidable and it can unfortunately some times even double the price of certain games. Almost my entire 3ds collection is imported since it’s extremely rare to come across 3ds games here, now that the console is “dead” Anyways. Thanks for the video! it was really nice hearing someone with so much experience on collecting, giving advice and sharing their experience.

Thanks for talking about your experience. I was overflowed with nostalgia when you mentionned Disgaea : i started with Phantom Brave, one of the first games to be released on blu-ray, i had to buy a new specific PS2 i had no idea it existed! This beautiful game took me on the tactical rpg train and i proceded to get the entire NipponIchi Software catalogue in the following years lol I hope your eye issue will be solved. I like this vidéo's format, but i think you like gaming or reading better lol

Great video, very informative! Nice choice of background music too. I hope that means you enjoyed the game(s), even though the internet really doesn't like when people express their enjoyment of that particular game. It is one of my favourites!

That was a lovely video! As a slight addition, I would also add looking into how to take care of ones collection. This is especially important for older products such as the Gameboy/DS line of products. Whether it's older game cartridges, plush toys or figures that have seen a few years of dust, or even strategy guides who's pages might be starting to yellow with age. Taking care of one's collection can remind oneself of the journey they've been on in collecting said collection, and make one think of the next piece to add to the hoard!

Yes, good point - quite a few people have mentioned this topic. I'm probably not the best guide for that but it's definitely something we can all talk about and share tips.

Britta this is an inspirational and very helpful video for beginners in this hobby. I've been collecting for quite a few years and you cover a lot of the aspects that I wasn't aware of at the beginning. Myself, I concentrate on JRPGs and shmups, but also have a real dedication to anything related to the Horizon games. I will soon be setting up my first dedicated games room for my collection and I'll be sure to send you pictures when it's done! :)

Great video, i'm looking forward to this series! I've been gaming since I was little and have held onto/re-acquired many games that mean a lot to me, but I've only just recently started actively collecting! My biggest collection at the moment is Switch- I currently have all of the Visual Novel/VN Hybrids that received a physical switch release and have English support! My other focus is JRPGs. My second biggest collections are Vita and DS/3DS, but they are much smaller in comparison! I agree with all the points you've brought up, and I've been burned lately by lack of patience and just a little bit of FOMO. It's very easy to get a little too sucked into it!

Nice, I'm looking forward to watching this series! Not really something for the beginning collector, but one important thing I've had to do throughout my years of collecting is periodically reassess and cull my collection as needed. Sometimes you will find bulk lots that are good deals but come with extra games you might not necessarily be as interested in or sometimes you just find that you lose interest in having some games in the collection over the course of however many years. It can be a tough thought to let games go from your collection, but I think it helps keep that library of games cleaner and more tailored exactly to the individual that it belongs to. Plus you can recoup some of the costs to add more important games in the future.

That's very good advice, coming from practical experience. Of course I have a story I will share, about one of those bulk lots 😄

Always nice to see a new video from you. I've been collecting pretty much my entire life, but even so I still found this interesting to listen to. I can definitely relate to a lot of it! Wouldn't call myself financially motivated or anything like that, but in the beginning for me it was sort of an issue - I could only really count on one or two games a year from my parents, if that, and the budget was kind of shared between me and three other siblings. Must have been a killer for them with all of us wanting our own gameboys and copies of pokemon. When it came to a choice between a PS2 and Gamecube one Xmas I was happy to get my choice to play Mario Sunshine, but felt a bit guilty that my brother wouldn't get to play his GTA games. Eventually Gamestop came around and I was able to trade stuff in a bit more and get some bargain bin games, though not always guaranteed to work despite what they'd promise. And at the end of the day I regretted trading in a lot of stuff. Got my first job going on 16, and decided to get myself a 360 while waiting for new Wii releases. Had been almost exclusively a Nintendo gamer til then, and it opened me up to a lot of what games could be, as well as new friends to play with in general. Even got a PS3, but it was shortlived as it had stopped working just after I'd quit and I couldn't trade it in for one that functioned. For a while I'd learned how things go on craigslist and made more deals there at least, though I had to part with much more that apparently I didn't learn my lesson the first time around. Thing is, having had pretty consistent work since getting my second job, when money is not quite so much of an issue, coupled with being in a more fortunate situation than many as well as obsessive interests likely caused by autism, you find that you might be spending way more money on a hobby than you really ought to be. For a long time I would have scoffed at you if you told me it was an addiction, and I do still find the notion a bit hypocritical coming from some who spend tons on sports memorabilia or clothes or whatnot, but in recent years I've spent near whole paychecks on needing to get brand new copies of old games, figurines and soundtracks, special editions, etc. At the very least it's easy to avoid the free to play model that nickels and dimes many, but it's not much better to always need stuff on day one. That and I'm finding I need more space if I'm to continue at this rate. Since getting a new PC it's been a bit better, though I prefer to have physical games, having digital stuff does seem like a relief at times. The Steam sales are great, but I suppose it's my old soda stand marketting strategy from back when I was little to sell for far less to maximize sales. I'm still spending more than I would have had these games been full price, just because in my mind I'm telling myself it's such a steal. So I definitely think it's important for some to just give themselves a reality check at times. It can still be a hobby, just think about how much you're really putting into it and whether it's a detriment or not for you. One thing in particular I have been interested in for some time was the Vectrex. I'd started with the SNES back in the day, was maybe 3 or 4, so anything before that has been pretty fascinating to me. NES games have been rereleased numerous times, though, and other vintage stuff still feels relatively normal, when you've got this really unique console with an arcade-like monitor included and where each game comes with its own overlay to add to its already unique graphics system. I'd checked back then and it was something around $300 which quickly put a hard stop on that, but I checked again recently out of curiosity and found it's reached $1000 or more. That's sadly just too much to justify on something I know wouldn't actually get much use from me. Oh well. At least there seem to still be some games that sort of emulate that feeling, like one level in Travis Strikes Again, probably many others I don't know about. Going on 31 soon, I've been trying to curb my bad spending habits a bit (not just on games but also junk food and movies, anime, whatever else). In part it's been pretty easy with continuously losing interest in either Sony or Microsoft, and Nintendo not needing to make a new console yet. Really it's just a few Nintendo franchises for me again, plus whatever indie games I fancy on PC. Three big names I've really admired for a while have been Goichi Suda, Yoko Taro, and Hidetaka Suehiro, and lately it seems their games aren't as generally exclusive to any one system anymore, which is a good thing for me. But the one big thing I've set for myself is to try and at least finish one game before spending on more. Hasn't always worked, but at least I'm giving a conscious effort to do so. Otherwise I've been trying to focus more on my art so maybe one day I can leave this job, as well as finding out whether this one person overseas is worth it for me to save up to go and meet in person one day before she finds someone who might take things more seriously. Crossing my fingers. This is a pretty long comment, so thanks for reading, and thank you for making this video!

yes to the FOMO. i struggle to keep myself in check. i'm not really a collector, i just buy games to play them BUT... i get heavily discouraged whenever i purchase a game and find that it's not the entire package, and now i have to sift through 900+ different dlc's ( looking at you koei tecmo ). so, i already know that if i decide to start an actual collection, i'd go insane from all of the little stuff. i will go and buy little plushes and stuff of my favorite games though!
