Dear Britta, I love playing games since I was a child. But I’d lost this hobby because I was tired about shooters, weapons, bigger / better / brighter blockbusters. On one point it was just too much for me. The hobby felt like some kind of work. Randomly I found to the Atelier Games and couldn’t be happier

Britta you are so amazing. It makes me so happy to see many people trying out the Atelier series and this is the best guide I have ever seen to let others know what they should start with. My first atelier game was the vanilla Atelier Rorona and I was playing it since 2010. Since then I became an atelier fan and I wanted to play every last one of them.❤️

I have finally decided to get into the Atelier series. It's a series that really drew my attention but I always thought I didn't have time to dedicate to long complicated JRPGs, until I realised they aren't necessarily long and are also "laid back" as in you can play them casually, and because I decided to get into Blue Reflection (also by Gust), which I am really enjoying for how casual and uncomplicated it is, finding out the Atelier is similar in that sense. What made me click on the buy button ultimately is the new Atelier Marie Remake, as seeing the trailers it just looked adorable, and according to many KZreadrs is an ideal, uncomplicated place to start with simpler mechanics as well as the time limit being optional, so I couldn't resist and got that imported on physical for Switch, and have it ready for when I finish Blue Reflection, but I also got hold of Ryza 1, Lulua and Nelke on physical (they are starting to get a bit pricy even second hand) to add to the "play after" list. Thing is I need games that are forgiving with the inputs (my hands don't always do what I want them to do), as well as uncomplicated for my concentration and fatigue issues, where I can play in short spurts when I feel I can handle it. So many games lately seem to be a bit unforgiving for people with medical limitations, but from reading into them, it seems the Atelier saga fits the bill, as well as having what seems to be sweet plots without all the violence of late.

I think you'll be very happy with the Atelier series. 👍🏻 It's a good idea to stock up on physical copies now, as you are doing, as these smaller JRPGs tend to sell out and not get reprints (Ryza 1 was the big exception). I totally understand your position regarding games that are unforgiving for people with physical/mental issues (accessibility is making progress, but it's slow). I have documented my own situation with a hand disease in a video - in case you're interested: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mouappSodq23prA.html Due to age and declining health I also face things like fatigue and concentration issues. The newer Atelier games in particular are such a breath of gentle air, they're wonderful, for accommodating people like us.

I'm so glad I found this video! I rented Atelier Iris on PS2 when I was a kid, but the slower pace didn't click with my impatient child brain. Then a few years later I saw the first Arland game on the shelf and immaturely dismissed it as a "girly game". I've long since regretted not giving those games, and the rest of the Atelier series, a fair shake. So this video was extremely helpful in figuring out what to expect from different trilogies. P.S. I hope someday I can have half as cool of a game collection as you do!

Hi Swanny, thanks and welcome. The only problem is that this video is now quite old .. over 3 years! So it doesn't include any of the newer Atelier games, like the whole Ryza trilogy (probably the best way for newcomers to start) and other games like Sophie 2. I really hope I'll find the time one day to do an update video! 😀

Britta, first of all, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your content. You are definitely my comfort KZreadr, and your videos help me get through the days. This video of yours is one of my favorites because I love the Atelier series, it's my cozy game and my safe space. Atelier Ryza (the first one) was my first, but I couldn't finish it because I thought it was confusing. I didn't gave up on the series though and went right into the Mysterious Trilogy, starting with Sophie. In my experience, Sophie has a much better experience and it's easier to understand for someone who never played the series compared with Ryza. That being said, I'm ready to return to Ryza haha bought Ryza 2 recently, but first I'll finish Lydie & Suelle. :) Thank you again for your content, you're very important and special to many.

Hi Caroline, many thanks and kudos for sticking with Atelier! A lot of people pretend that Atelier games are all easy-peasy, but that is not necessarily the case! The first Ryza is ... actually not one of my favourite games, and I think you pinpointed that; it has loads of things jammed into it, but not always that well organised. Now, Ryza 2 is quite different and I like it much better! Sophie is a big favourite for a good reason: it's a very solid, well-constructed game. Everybody responds differently to the alchemy systems (which change with the times and trilogies). The new games (like Ryza) have what I call a 'composite' system that combines features from all three "ages" of Atelier.

Atelier Iris 1, the first one released outside japan, was meant as an easing into the Atelier series mechanics (you can do alchemy anywhere not just at your home base, it plays more like a standard jrpg) and the plot is very well paced and dispenses itself very swiftly

Yes, I know 😎 I have the Iris games. But I need to be realistic - most people who come here and ask me about Atelier don't tend to have access to the older games and consoles. This video is now quite old. If I were to update it, there would be the Ryza trilogy, but also the recent remake of Atelier Marie. Gust/KT are keen to make most of the games available to modern platforms, so I'm hopeful we'll see more of the old games making a reappearance.

Dusk is the only Atelier trilogy (Release in the west) that, I haven't played despite owning the PS3 titles. Do a DX version exist and will most likely be how I'm gonna experince Dusk. I don't have an issue with time management in Atelier, as I began with Atelier Totori for PS3 and end up piick up every Atelier release since then (missing digital titles like Dusk DX), do will admit not having a timer is nice. Recently heard the opening song to Totori and was remind how must I enjoy listing to it.

And if it is true what people say about the Atelier Series being "comfy games" this, in a wonderful parable is a really nice, relaxing and comfy Channel :) I'll stick around to hear more about what you have to tell us about Videogames and other Stuff^^

Hi slimcreeper and welcome. 🙋🏻 Atelier is generally described as a "comfy" or "cozy" game series. That is certainly true on one level ... but the games can also be quite demanding, if you so choose. As a rule of thumb, I'd say the older Atelier trilogies are sometimes trickier to complete due to time management requirements. I've seen people in virtual tears on forums because they couldn't get the true ending in Ayesha. The newer games (esp. starting with Ryza) are far more forgiving and therefore more truly "comfy", I guess. But this should not impart the impression that they are devoid of any challenges.

I just finished my first Atelier game, Atelier Ryza on the Nintendo switch, and absolutely loved it. I think instead of going on to Ryza 2 immediately, I'd like to try out one with time management, maybe Rorona or Ayesha. Thank you for this very clear and insightful video! If you happen to see this comment, I have a question - I've heard Ayesha (and possibly the other two in the dusk trilogy?) have a bit more of a "serious" story compared to the other games - do you think that's true? If so, I might prefer starting with Rorona instead, at least for now... thank you again.

  • @Food4Dogs

Hi, Always happy to hear of another new Atelier fan. 😀 The Dusk trilogy has an overarching theme - dwindling water supplies slowly endangering the environment and earth. While a serious topic, it is not constantly pushed into the foreground. It's simply there and the characters deal with it in their lives. The games have the same gentle humour and loveable characters as other Atelier games. I would say that Ayesha has another, quite serious/sad theme (loss of a loved one), so if you prefer a more lighthearted story, I would recommend Escha & Logy. Don't worry, it's a completely standalone story and there's no necessity to play Ayesha first. You can always do that later. I think that would be a more comfortable transition than jumping straight back to Rorona. But that's just my thoughts on the matter. In the end, you should go with what appeals most to you at this point in time. Good luck, and let me know how it goes!

Ive been wanting to get into this series. But the problem is that i dont like paying 1200 bucks for a used game. Ryza 2 and everything before it are 1200 minimum used i think. And the funny thing is they dont even have it in stock. They are simply not for sale.

I don't know where you live and what your bucks currency is - but this is simply not true. The first Ryza game is available (new) with many retailers - Amazon lists it at 40-58 USD depending on platform. Play-Asia has it, and ofc Videogamesplus Canada. VGP were the first to have reprints of *all 3 Ryza* games. This was well advertised. Now I see Ryza 2 & 3 are out of stock. However, VGP do restock regularly where they can, so it's well worth going on their newsletter list to be alerted of new arrivals. Their price for Ryza 1 is 65 CAD, btw - not 1200 bucks! I have no idea where you were looking, but it's easy enough to find out the real, normal price for Ryza games.

I also looked at local online resale sites, but no one has anything other than ryza 3 or sophie 2. It really is not for sale here, and if it is, its 1200 for a used copy. Also cant find ryza 1 or 2 on play asia for delivery here.
