But fuck that. Do what you love and wanna do. Explore! We only have a limited time on this earth. Don't waste it listening to others and following all the rules. I am an elder techie too! 10 years ago I lost my big brother at just 59 years old. I had taken time from work to care for him and a week before he passed I was fired from that job. I lost my brother, my job, my car... And nearly lost myself. My grandson was into Minecraft and I learned that I could get an Xbox and play with him online - so I decided to give it a try. We spent hours playing and having a blast building magnificent castles and roller coaster mine carts... With headsets so we could talk to each other. At one point I was playing with my grandson and 4 or 5 other 6-8 year olds when he said "grandma that's awesome!" And one of the other boys said "That's not a grandma! Grandmas don't play Xbox!" Lol it was a good laugh. My grandson is now 16 and driving... He's not into gaming much anymore... But I've continued and settled on Fallout 4 - a single player game with battles against ghouls and super mutants. My health has declined in the past years as I've aged. Now I appreciate the fact that I can jump, run, battle bad guys and win! It's great emotional therapy. I'm glad to "meet" another older gamer! May you defeat evil and be victorious in all your endeavors!

Love hearing your story! I’m a 61 yr old gamer girl myself. I’ve been an avid gamer since my grandpa bought me the first Atari console and a 12 inch b/w tv for Christmas the year it launched in 1977. I was hooked the very first moment I turned it on and have played near daily since. My kids grew up playing and we spent most nights playing games together as a family. My son and I still play together online and spend lots of time messaging each other about games. I’ve also gotten all 5 of my grandchildren into gaming. I bought them all tvs and PS4s for their bedrooms and I pay for their ps plus memberships as well as new games for Christmas and birthdays. They are jelous their Grammy and uncle have PS5s now and are hinting hard they need an upgrade for Christmas. Guess I better get started buying those soon lol. I love gaming and I’m very thankful for the closeness it has brought to our family. It has given us a commonality we might not otherwise have had. All 3 generations of our family play and talk together online near daily because of gaming and I wouldn’t change a thing 🙂

However, near the start of the pandemic, my mother and father both caught Covid (back in the scary days pre-vaccine; they are both healthy and vaccined now!), starting a new (and demanding) job, and buying a house, I very nearly had a psychotic break. I wasn't sleeping and for the first time in my life, was experiencing crippling anxiety. So, I found myself seeking counseling. Without a doubt, it literally made me able to deal with all the insanity in my life. Just having someone who wasn't family (and for the record, I had a very strong and robust support system with my family) tell me that: Yeah, there are all kinds of insane things happening in your life and that it is perfectly normal for you to feel stressed to the max; here are some coping strategies that can help. And they did. Counseling is beyond useful, even if you consider yourself a strong, resilient person.

I got my mother into playing games finally when she was in her late 60's. There were a good few years where she was having a blast playing Rimworld, Mount And Blade Warband, Stardew Valley and others. Unfortunately she had a severe stroke that left her with essentially a learning disability that makes it difficult for her to learn how to play any new games. Now she can only play Animal Crossing and Pokemon. A lot of elderly people think they're too old to learn to play video games, or that they're for children. Neither is true.

The bills are paid on time, I own everything I want, have a good relationship and have disposible income, but there's always this nagging feeling that I should be striving for something more nowadays. This video was fantastic and helped remind me that time spent doing something you enjoy (within reason) isn't at all wasted. I hope I can learn to live in the present more often, and find the joy in whats in front of me like gaming has done for you, without worrying too much about where I will be in 10 years time. Unless you are truly neglecting necessities in your life, whatever you enjoy,(art, music, reading ,gaming, kissing...) you should be able to enjoy without GUILT! Why are you working if not to be able to enjoy life? Sometimes circumstances are such that life is miserable. Then, its even more important to hold on to the things you enjoy. We each need to look within to know what we need to prioritize. The outside world has an agenda(there than your happiness) politicians want you to elect them, businesses want you to consume, your boss wants you to produce..YOU need to decide what is actually important and best for you.

The algorithm brought me here but I stayed for the way you articulate everything so beautifully. I remember as a kid playing Golden Ax and Streets Of Rage on the Sega Genesis with my grandpa and siblings. Even though we were kids still learning our way the controller, he was always so patient and encouraging. He was a pro at Super Mario Bros, he liked to show us how he could beat the entire thing without collecting a mushroom. When I got a N64, Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time was the first game I truly played and fell in love with. My grandpa would go out and buy us new games and game guides even though he himself stopped playing. Even if he didn’t play anymore, he still supported us. So many early mornings we would cut into his time watching The Andy Griffith show to play on his tv. I’ll always be thankful for that. This was such a nice and welcome reminder to visit and try to coax him into a few run throughs of the games we used to play to knock off some of that rust. Thank you 💜

It feels good to see other people you wouldn’t expect to play any games be playing such a diverse set of games that I don’t even know about, and that’s what I find so cool. She literally has more taste than me for games and media haha. It’s always fun to find people who are in all the stereotypes, not the type to even pick up a controller getting curious and then gaining an understanding for how many of us younger folks see the world. I think it’s a great common ground that can be built upon and bring us closer, forming connections over common interests and understanding that leads to many great stories and experiences to be made from an ever wider range of background. And let’s be real, seeing new people and unexpected people having fun and maybe even being there to help is fun by extension. Puts a smile on my face to help others in say Battlefield, talk to a new low rank player and help them understand a few things, and watch them begin to flourish in the environment that might have been frustrating before.

Well that's not entirely true, I think a lot us are pretty hyped to see an older lady getting so passionate about the hobby. I mean let's be real - if this video was by some 25 year old dude, would we really give af? Unlikely. That he has a taste for gaming is unsurprising and I don't know if we're all that interested in what he finds appealing and what his sensibilities for games are. But a woman in her... 70s(?) - I genuinely am interested to know what appealed to her most in games. Don't really know why, but I am. It's particularly sweet that she appears to be into niche indie games and has developed opinions about them.

I’ve been a musician for many years. DO NOT listen to anyone who tells you it’s “hard” if you don’t start early. The problem isn’t you, it’s how music is often taught. Do we learn how to read BEFORE we learn how to speak? No! But when we approach music, most teachers try to teach the music theory before just letting the student play by ear. FIRST, play around and learn how to play what you like by ear. Later, learn the theory. Proper physical technique will make playing easier, but if you relax and let your body and hands feel the instrument, you’ll naturally begin to discover proper technique. Lessons are good, but they don’t have to be the starting point.

70 year old woman here. I've been into PC gaming for decades. I currently play RUST (mostly), ARMA3 (both multi player games), Elder Scrolls, a lot of story line games and I love puzzle games, too. I think it all started back in the 80s with Monkey Island. The winters are long here so it's a way to pass the time. Over the years I did have a few consoles but they lacked a lot of things like the ability to mod a game, sand box games etc... so today I'm solid into PC gaming. Today, I build my own gaming PCs. I also play Dominion Online (free browser single/multiplayer) and also the Steam (PC ) version of Dominion. I live far from most of my family so it's a good way for us all to get together via Discord, every week to play an online board game.

I'm only 18 and have been gaming pretty much my whole life, but I love how gaming can have such an equally powerful effect on people of all ages and backgrounds. You talked about how Atelier Ayesha helped you through a hard time, and it really struck a chord with me. Part of the reason I love RPGs so much (JRPGs in particular) is because, for me at least, no other genre can so consistently reach into your heart with powerful characters and stories, worlds you want to experience every aspect of, et cetera. April of 2021 through this March (2022) was a really, really hard time in my life. In order to protect myself emotionally/cope with what was going on, I began to dissociate from my emotions lest they become too overwhelming. Starting from this March, things started to improve again, but that defense mechanism had buried itself into my psyche by then. I felt pretty much entirely emotionally numb - I would still experience feelings of course, but they weren't typically even close to intense, or even what you'd expect to be a normal level. No media I consumed nor any experience I had was able to break through it, even ones that really should have were I in my normal emotional state of being. Then, starting a couple months ago, I began to play Xenoblade Chronicles 3. You talked about how some people need something to help guide them through their negative emotions in a safe environment, and this is precisely what 3 was for me. I've been a Xenoblade fan for several years (though not as long as you have, actually!), but this game was able to reach me on a level none of the others had, and it was in the course of playing it that I was finally able to cry for probably the first time in over a year - the emotional power of the game's characters and story were able to break through that barrier I had instinctually erected in my psyche to protect myself when nothing else could for months and months. To add to that, the arcs of several of the characters and even some of the game's primary thematic messaging helped me really begin to process some of my own feelings. I'll forever be grateful for this game helping me begin to move forward and start truly healing - already, I find myself actually happy and excited about life rather than just borderline content at most - I'm no longer just going through the motions, but looking forward to, treasuring, and doing my best to take advantage of each moment. I've still got a lot of work to do on myself, obviously, but I'm really and truly hopeful about what's to come for the first time in a good while. Thanks so much for sharing your story, and I'm so glad we can all share this wonderful medium together!

She watching me play through all of Ocarina of Time, all of Mario 64 and Starfox 64. Also Shenmue. Every so often she would point something out, I might have missed or mention how beautiful the scenery was. So even now when I play those particular games it’s bittersweet. I left this comment on a dumb reddit thread: The majority of girl gamers I’ve personally gotten to know through playing World of Warcraft, some are way more hardcore about it than I am. I have an ex that got really big into Overwatch and Diablo 3. Another girl gamer friend that’s trying to convince me to play Hades. Girlfriend Reviews, a KZread channel, absolutely loved Doom: Eternal. And today I watched an IGN review from a woman who tried Halo Infinite and is excited about it. I also remember Gears of War having a "surprise" female fan base for how much gore the game has. Gaming has never been gendered in my world. There’s just gamers and non-gamers.

@@TheNynax my stance would be that anyone who calls themselves a girl gamer is not actually a gamer. after all if they were they would just be A gamer. Girls have always been a part of gaming. but putting your gender in front of it is an active attempt at separating yourself from the original group. A lot of these attitudes towards non gamers. spawn from the time that you would simply be ostracized or bullied. wich was in gaming's infancy, same with how you got bullied hard for being a nerd. Now that that culture has gone mainstream, everyone is adopting the label and that naturally makes the oldest group... spiteful. All these people that would have shunned them in the past now encroaching upon their hobby and often leading to the actual games getting watered down for people that originally had no interest to begin with. I personally have no trouble with casual gamers. However at the same time i despise the normies who are directly responsible for the decline in gaming depth and quality because they will buy pretty much anything

To me, it is always amazing. My grandmother, who is gone now, used to play Tetris on a LCD system that was so very common in 90's onward I guess. I think I forgot it to her place, did not like Tetris as a kid much, and it ended up her's. Someone even cleaned that old old thing because it was slowing down from too much of use or something. I play Tetris these days more, but it started as thinking about my passed away grandmother in a way, thinking what she saw, when I was younger and did not "see". There is lot of narcissistic tendency in gaming, where you are in it to feel like a winner, often literally by winning some game or something. The social gaming these days tends to minimize communication but keep people hooked on "winning" or one upping over others that is there tends to manifest in such weird ways.

My father, whose first console was the Intellivision, raised me and my brothers alongside video games, so I’ve always considered myself a gamer. Games have always been there to help me through the ups and downs in life. I think they had a big part in making me the woman I am today. They helped spark my desire to be a kind and helpful person and made me a much more creative and open-minded person. I always liked it a lot and had a lot of fun when I sometimes met 3 generations or older people playing in some MMO's I played in the past in my younger days (teens-twenties). Those saying mean things one day will be at her age if they're young & interested in gaming, they'll realise how ridiculous they were being by being mean spirited/ignorant. I am 70 and started playing World of Warcraft (WoW) in 2006 when my son enlisted in the US Air Force and was stationed in England. Being a single mom and he an only child I missed him terribly. He had, of course, played every manner of video and computer game for years with his friends and I would watch now and then but had no clue what he was doing and what the point was! Never did I dream I would ever play any game on the computer besides solitaire! My son was not keen on emailing me or phoning me while he was overseas but he did mention in one call that one of his buddies there who played WoW played with his mother and sister and was able to communicate with them in game. Sooo, I decided what the heck and bought and downloaded the game. My son soon tired of me bugging him all the time in game (plus there was the time difference) but I was lucky enough to meet some folks in game (remember LFG?) and we went on to play together and form guilds and I was even the Guild Master for a while. It was so much fun and everyone treated me kindly...they even called me 'Mom'. The playing started to slack off after we beat the Lich King and new expansions didn't hold my interest for long. I played off and on for several years but was never able to recapture the fun it once was. Even today, though, I still think about starting again, in spite of all the turmoil and bad things that have happened with Blizzard/Activision. Being retired now I stop myself for budget reasons but I have to say that, for awhile at least, playing WoW and other games like Rift were some of the best times I've ever had. And now that the original "gamers" are getting older, too, there are certainly more adults playing then when I started. I highly recommend that seniors consider online gaming as an alternative to TV any day!

Your story is very touching. I am only 31, but recently lost my mom who was only 54. This terrible loss was and still is very painful for not only me, but my dad as well. She had unfortunately suffered from mental illness for over 30 years. She smoked cigarettes to cope and did so for a very long time. With her mental illness, there are many bad memories that are mixed in with the good ones. Times when she was not medicated, versus times where she was happy as can be. She was the sweetest person ever when she could be. She had a huge heart. Since I was a kid, I have always played video games. Growing up in the 90's allowed me to witness the evolution of gaming. I play more than ever now. It's like a way to get my mind off of reality- to just do something. I don't think i'll ever get away from it, nor do I want to. My wife and I are due for a baby next year. I hope to share the joy of gaming with that kid when the times come. It will be good. My mother has recently been diagnosed with cancer, we are very close, and i found that the only times im not extremely down or overthinking, worrying about all the possible out comes, is when im diving deep into these games. Even if for a while its an escape. I felt maybe ive been a bit too invested, addicted even. But your video helped me to understand why perhaps im so fixated on video gaming lately. And i think just maybe your words will help me to not beat myself up so much for playing as often as i do. Im a new subscriber, but ive already watched 3 hrs of your videos! I really enjoy your outlook and taste in games! Thank you. I appreciate your experiences and your willingness to share them. You are one of the good ones, I wish you all the best.

I cried a little bit watching this video lol Also I've noticed that first entries in Atelier trilogies tend to be kind of somber as with Ayesha and Sophie both coping with loss at the start of the game. Going on adventures with them truly can be cathartic

This video meant more to me than I expected it to. I’m a 34 year old gamer and I live in an area where gaming is still very taboo and is an activity that people see as being ‘just for kids’. My family refuse to acknowledge or respect my hobby and it’s incredibly validating to hear somebody from my parents’ generation who gets it.

Same. People judgement on gaming makes me have a low self esteem because I love gaming so much that my only wish in life is to have a lots of time for gaming but since gaming is view as something unproductive, I've been hating myself for loving it :(

I listened to every second of your video. From all the ways you attempted to rid yourself of that PS3 that refused to leave you, it's certainly serendipitous that this video was recommended to me by KZread. I'm in the midst of trying to endure the aftermath of immense trauma, and currently struggling with my gaming identity (like, am I using gaming as escapism/avoiding my reality). Your storytelling was truly captivating and helped me look at my situation from a different perspective. It certainly made my day so much better and lets me think I can get through this difficult patch. I feel a little less alone in this moment and I look forward to watching your other videos.

Britta, as a gamer who has battled with trauma and grief for most of my life, I just want to say that you are an absolute treasure and it has been a joy hearing about your gaming journey. I am so glad your channel exists. X
