Shipping to Costa Rica: Should I move in a shipping container or suitcases?

How can I ship my household belongings to Costa Rica? We get this question numerous times each week. Most people think that they should hire a professional mover, pack up their stuff in a shipping container and move it to Costa Rica. While that's the right scenario for some people, it's not ideal for most people. It's costly and many things you own won't fare well in Costa Rica.
In this video, we discuss your options for moving your stuff to Costa Rica.

Arrived in CR yesterday. We brought 5 suitcases each. Bought a car here. Less is more.

When we sold our house last summer, we had done some research and decided we were not going to ship any furniture to CR. As far as we were concerned, our old furniture had served its purpose and wasn't worth the hassle of getting it here. We threw away anything that family members/friends didn't want and stuff that was too banged up to donate. We still have a beach condo full of furniture (and a garage that's stuffed to the gills with God knows what) and a storage unit that has stuff in it as well. We are in the process of giving furniture and other things to relatives and Goodwill and hopefully by this summer it will all be sorted out. In the meantime, we moved here in August of last year and we each brought two suitcases, a carry-on and a personal bag full of stuff. We purchased a car here. Every time I go back to the US, I only pack my carry-on and personal bag with stuff that I need and bring two empty suitcases to fill with stuff that I want in CR for the trip back. It has been a hard process trying to decide what to bring, but I can assess what I used or didn't use from the items I brought the last time. I ask myself questions like: "Do you really need to bring 4 more dresses when you haven't worn either of the two you brought last time?" "Have you even worn any heels in the last 90 days?" "Is it even cool enough for that sweater?" If it has a hole in it or a stain, even if it was my favorite most comfortable clothing item, it is not coming! 😄 It gets easier every time I go back. I just got back from a trip, and I threw away a huge garbage bag of stuff and had a bag and a half of things to donate. Slowly but surely, I'll get through everything that's left. Flight bag limits are both my friend and my enemy. There has been many a thing that just can't come because of the weight, but did I really need it anyway? 🤷

Aaron and Patrick, your videos are by far the most comprehensive yet easy-going on KZread. One thing I find missing in general, is good information about families relocating from North America to Costa Rica. As I've mentioned before, I have a family of six. My wife and I +4 daughters. Ages one year to 11 years old. I don't see much of anything on KZread that addresses the cost of a large family moving to or living in CR. Schools, rentals/purchase, five-six bedroom homes, etc. Do you have plans on covering these issues or topics? Even if you don't, you have the best information so far. Thank you!!! 🙏

Thank you again for the time, creativity, and work that you are both putting into this endeavor. It is very helpful, much appreciated and recognized. 🤠👏😀 R-

My wife and I moved here in 2019, and we shipped everything in a container. It made no sense to leave a household of furniture/belongings just so we could then replace everything with something of lower quality. What I wish we'd brought with us was a refrigerator, as our Mabe only made it to four years before giving up the ghost.

I understood that according the new law 2020 you are entitled to bring your personal effects for free, but what do they understand on this. Import duty on your electrical vehicle , I have a 3 year old Tesla Y very low mileage I understood 17% import duty?

  • @yourpuravida

Once you have your visa - but each visa has different requirements. So this won't be a Day One thing. Also think about who will repair Tesla here - make sure you have that figured out before you make that move.

What do you guys think about home dehumidifiers for those humid areas? Here in Texas, it gets hot and humid, so a dehumidifier is great for keeping the air inside comfortable and also helps us save money with lower AC bills. Can you find those out there or should I add that to the list of must-brings?

I heard there’s a new law that wqs approved this year which will allow foreigners to bring up to two cars without import tax. Is that correct?

  • @yourpuravida

Not true! If you gain residency, you can bring up to 2 cars without import tax but there’s a bunch of reasons why that probably isn’t a wise decision. It’s costly to ship cars and they might not be suited for Costa Rica. It’s a nuanced decision.
