Shinzen Young's "CHART of HUMAN HAPPINESS"

In April 2011, on the last night of a retreat in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, (and due to popular request), Shinzen explained his visual "Chart of Human Happiness."
This talk was preceded by an answer to "Where Does the Love Come In" in this practice - which is posted here as a separate video.

Notice there is no content as far as topics are concerned. This is a nice way to detach from the actual details contained within the content of thoughts. Its not like seeing this concept or hearing this topic or even looking for explanations for feeling particular emotions. It stays away from the conceptual. In that way it appears to be rationally irrational.

I always wondered why shinzen does that cough every so often. Then I remembered him saying he used to be a huge stoner xD now I know why that cough is so familiar

Wonderful! Thank you! I was wondering about the no mind or don't know state, now I am glad to hear, that it is quite normal, relax into not knowing, being in the now. Also, the information that mindfulness and negative behaviour potentiate each other has solved a deep question. Now I know the way out! Thank you eternally for this! Namaste

Looking at the chart of happiness, on the left is surface (forward backwards, left right), on the right is volume by adding depth (up down), a whole extra dimension. Surfaces are fragile, whereas volumes are robust. But a volume can only interact through a surface. So both are intimately connected and necessary. Moreover, in physics some of us attempt (and succeed) to describe a volume by its surface. Black holes for example, their interior that is (3 space dimensions, 1 time dimension), can be described by their event horizon/surface (3-1=2 space dimensions, 1 time dimension). Some people also use a similar method to describe the universe itself.

I have a standard of "spiritual teachings" - does this make sense to most persons who sleep on the sidewalk and eat out of trash receptacles? Despite Shinzen's lack of understanding of what he might refer to as "schizophrenic street-corner ravers" I promise that most "street people" would understand this talk. Shinzen does actually understand that there is a certain element of no-self among those persons who have just had the ego beat out of them and have not died nor chose a life of self-pity.

It would be nice for Shinzen to explain meridian Yoga such as Zen Makko-ho stretches. Found it a whole lot easier to understand and watch energy patterns having done some Yoga Asanas and Chi Gung.

I had always wondered if the senses taste and smell were just more complex sensations/feelings giving the illusion of a different sense. Is this why he only lists sight, hearing, and feeling?

***** Well, six years ago, I had two artificially induced experiences of oneness where my consciousness was expanded beyond its mundane limits of the separate human consciousness. These were my small tastes of what it is like to be enlightened, where I had no fears or affectations. Complete acceptance of my own mortality and human limitations. All of my repressed traits floated to the surface effortlessly because I saw clearly that there was no separate self that needed protection from them. However, because these experiences weren't brought about through meditation, contemplation, observation, or self-inquiry, the effects were not permanent, and I've fallen back asleep. However, I'm now getting on track and seeking to experience the truth of no self without artificial aides. So, my question regarding taste/smell is about being mindful of the truth of these sensations beyond my conceptual awareness of them. Our conceptual dominance and symbolic thinking often keeps us from experiencing what is true.

***** It was Ayahuasca. I did it twice, five months apart from one another back when I was in college. But I don't recommend it (nor any other drug/plant/substance), simply because the results don't stay and the fact that many people would go in seeking a recreational experience and would come out with more than they could handle... like I did. That said, if there was one positive thing that came from it, it really showed me that there was so much more to reality than I had imagined. Prior to the experience, I was Agnostic leaning Atheist with the thought that spirituality was mostly a hoax created by people in positions of power. What I experienced was a connecting force that was so familiar that I immediately recognized it as the omnipresent phenomena referred to in many religions as 'God, Allah, Yaweh, Source, etc.' I had just been unconscious to what had always been there, but did not have the eyes to see it. So, I've been seeking consciousness expansion since then using meditation and self inquiry.

***** Was the PUA rant video from Actualized.org? If so, I just watched the same one. Yet again, I think Leo is interested in Shinzen Young's teachings. So, I guess it isn't too much of a coincidence. Thank you for your kind words. My recommendation is to really dig into the feelings that you're having. It is likely that the source of your stress and blockage comes from a belief or assumption that you have about yourself or reality that is false. So, just be mindful of your feelings and try to figure out where the uncomfortable feelings are coming from. Often times, looking at an issue with bare attention is all that is needed to move through the issue.

***** You're welcome. I somehow missed the first comment in the thread where you mentioned that you'd seen my comment on the PUA rant. That makes sense now. I just thought it was a happenstance thing. But on another note, the psyche can be like a labyrinth, and very difficult to navigate from the average level of human consciousness. Practices like meditation, contemplation, shadow work, and others help expand the level of consciousness. Think of consciousness like a light. It's going to be much easier and pleasant to navigate the twists and turns of the psyche with a high wattage flood light than with a candle which barely illuminates two feet in front of you. So, don't act rashly and try to be easy with yourself. It's valid to be where you are. Just practice gentle non-judgmental mindfulness to your situation, thoughts, and emotions. This should help you get your bearings and begin expanding your consciousness.

+The Diamond Net Ya. The PUA rant was by actualized.org, and Leo is indeed a student of Shinzen Young as well. I also do believe smell/taste are possibly just secondary combinations of other senses. This can almost be supported biologically. Some of our senses are physically tied now in our mind at this point. For example, your hearing is physically linked with your vision, and your sense of smell is physically linked with your sense of taste (hence why you can sometimes tell what something "tastes" like just by smelling it).
