A trip to Tokyo isn’t complete without a walk through Shinjuku, the city's bustling center. Home to the busiest train station in the world, the twists and turns of Shinjuku’s back alleys can be disorienting and overwhelming, but they also contain a treasure trove of hidden gems. A night walk through this area is one of the best things to do in Shinjuku!
In this video, Shizuka dives into this maze of a neighborhood, exploring the hidden spots in Shinjuku. Starting at Omoide Yokocho, aka memory lane, she weaves her way through restaurants featuring must-eat Japanese food like yakitori, sushi, and ramen. Learn how to eat sushi, slurp ramen like a local, and join us for a drink in Shinjuku's notorious Golden Gai, lovingly referred to as “piss alley.”
FEATURED FOODS:
Back to basics! These foods are all classic must-eats in Japan!
Yakitori: Grilled chicken on a stick. Sometimes it includes vegetables and other meats.
Sushi: Raw fish served on rice.
Hakata Tenjin Ramen: A popular brand of ramen featuring a rich soup.

I felt like Shizuka should be the one giving the tour to the guide lol.
She is the best host really! So upbeat and even though she knows a lot about the culture and the food she's eating she still allows the guest host to shine. She is a class act- and I love the Elmo reference! If there was only a way to give this more likes I would! 👍

I'm on a mission to stamp out this slurping myth. Yes, the ramen chefs know from the slurping that customers are eating and presumably enjoying the food, but that's not the purpose of slurping. As mentioned in the video, it enhances the flavor, much like slurping wine in a wine tasting (and it can make it easier to eat hot noodles). People slurp when they're eating alone at home, so it's not really a communicative but a gastronomic behavior. 🙂
I'm booking another trip to Japan as soon as they open up to Canadians. I'm thinking Christmas break.
@JapanbyFood

She really slurped those noodles ;)
@Japan by Food :: Such a good idea for the Samurai Rock drink, more character than simply Shōchu - Does the bar use a particular style or brand of 日本酒 for this drink I wonder? I would guess that they do - unless they just leave it to whatever their “house sake” whichever that is?
i like how she was surprised by one bite sushi. like i'm pretty sure she already knew that lol

Poor Shizuka having to put up with that. The irony of a South American asking a hafu if she knows what to say before eating
Last time I roasted Shishito for a curry, I ended up getting like 6 super spicy ones in 20... Usually never even get one, but somehow, roasting them and throwing them in a relatively spicy curry seemed to make them far spicier than normal... Either I hit the jackpot, or I'm never gonna get a spicy one again...

What is the name & address of all the restaurant that you have visit in this video
Couple of misconceptions I like to point out. It is wrong to put soy sauce on rice because it simply falls apart, besides that how it should be held or fish need to be against the tongue is simply not true. Eat it as you like it. Of course minimum common sense should be applied but lots of rules has been created since it became popular among foreigners. Next thing is ramen myths where slurping the noodles tells chefs how good it is is simply not true. It just means it’s allowed and any noodles in Japan has been eaten that way as long as I can remember without any silly reasons. I guess what I want say is some of the rules told nowadays are overly exaggerated, simply enjoy the food without causing lots of mess.
11:55 Ajax Amsterdam!
We visited this area and It was not for us to eat. Walking by the places were interesting to look at. However it seemed that all the food places were serving only meat. As we were wanting Suhi and we did not see any Sushi places on Omoide Yokocho We ventured to a Sushi conveyor restaurant nearby instead.
Why are the local city/town guides are not necessarily a Japanese local who lives in the area?
