Shin Megami Tensei 4 Apocalypse REVIEW | Let's Kill a GOD
Ойындар
Thank you Danny for gifting me this game :D
I am BACK baby on my Shin Megami Tensei bull crap! I can't believe I've played and reviewed 3 SMT games. Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne, Shin Megami Tensei 4, and now Shin Megami Tensei Apocalypse. My review of SMT4A covers the ost, gameplay and story. Sadly SMT4a is only on the Nintendo 3ds.
" Debuting as the top seller for its launch in Japan, Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse is headed to the Americas. The story of Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse depicts the remnants of Tokyo, ravaged by a catastrophe. Demons and humans co-exist, but in this state, the remnants of humankind are just a prize being fought over by the higher deities. One lone Hunter, the game's protagonist, meets an early demise and through a pact with a lesser god, is brought back to life in exchange for his pledge of servitude. From there, the protagonist allies with other Hunters in the ruins of post-apocalyptic Tokyo beginning a plot that crosses over with the events of the original Shin Megami Tensei IV. "

Great review as always! The Nanashi look brings alot of attitude to the table! I found this game to have a compelling start, and a compelling end, though the journey riddled with padding. All of the QoL improvements made it easier to push through than the original. Favorite song for me will have to be the Deicide Boss theme for its intense surge of toe to toe vibes

Real one; Deicide is one of the best songs I've ever heard legit.
You should 100% play the Redux version of Strange Journey! I'm super biased but Strange Journey has some of my favorite story beats of all time. And Redux has too many quality of life improvements to not recommend
I adore SMT IV and am very excited to get into IV A. For now though I'm in the middle of SMT II! It's amazing how far the series has come while staying true to its core, at least as far as storytelling goes.
Gamer bae has returned
I'm sooo excited to hear your thoughts on Strange Journey. I think it was the first SMT I beat and I think it's one of my favorites. I think either Redux or the original would be great. Love your content, thank you and happy new year queen
Sadly, I have to give up gaming for awhile. I will just need to live vicariously through your videos. Wonderful review. Keep ‘em coming
Your tone at the beginning of the video made me think this was going to be more critical than it ended up being. SMT IV A is my favorite Atlus game to date, but I broadly agree with the criticisms: story, worldbuilding, and music were all done better in SMT IV. With that said, there are so many little improvements to gameplay and balancing across the experience that it makes returning to the original a bit of a chore. SMT IV A is simply one of the funnest and most polished JRPGs I've ever played. Glad to see you enjoyed the game's different approach to how it developed the cast. I enjoy classic SMT and its creepy atmosphere as much as anyone, but it was SO nice to have a party of actual characters for a change, as opposed to stick figures meant to represent different ideologies. I wouldn't want this to become the new SMT norm, because it does absolutely ruin the unique vibe these games are known for, but I thought it worked well here. Great review! I'm quickly becoming a fan of this channel.

Haha, gotcha!! Real talk, I 100% agree, the gameplay in smt4a is a HUGE improvement. I prefer it over 4 easily. Also I love that we got a full cast, but I too wouldn't want this to be the norm as it would insult what smt was known for. But it was a nice change of pace.
wanted a new pelvic video for christmas and got a pelvic banger instead, truly the most wonderful time of the year. the passion is felt throughout the entire review, you clearly have a lot of fun talking about smt and this review was no exception. also your makeup was on point but then again what else is new

“Let’s kill a god” should be the tagline for all jrpg’s at this point
The anarchy ending was so cathartic. Funny how your ''friends'' instantly go for your throat the second you disagree with them in this game.
Krishna is great and I'm glad he's getting some love here. His theme is menacing and his voice is as smooth as butter.

How do I comment without gushing about how great your review is? Eh, who cares? This review was just SO GOOD!!! You've probably given the fairest review this game has ever received. There really are so many improvements in 4A that make it better than 4 as far as the gameplay mechanics are concerned. Just fixing the Smirk system was a huge feat. The other characters and the interaction with them is a better direction over the "lone wanderer" from 3 or even the fellow samurai of 4. You put in the time with this game and your opinions and comments reflect that. Damn you're good!!! I'm super pumped for your Strange Journey review. A lot of people consider it to be the hardest SMT game. Since you've beaten a few, you're not going to find it all that tough. I know I didn't. So, DS or 3DS version? Well, the 3DS version is still available for download off the marketplace. The DS version is tougher to find and expensive. If you do try to buy it, be careful not to buy the Japanese version. I would suggest playing the 3DS version and doing some research on the DS version, or even asking another SMT expert to talk about the differences. There are lots of them on KZread. The art between the DS and 3DS versions are going to make you pull your substantial hair out. My favorites are the character who gets their entire arm left out and the one with the tiny head on their huge body. I'm kind of dreading your SMT V review. It was such a downer for me. I don't think I've ever been so hyped and then disappointed for a game. I don't want to taint your review, so I will leave it at that. Thank you for all you've done this year. Quality reviews and all the personal touches that just make your channel unique. Keep living your awesome life and doing what you love. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!!!
10/10 look for this review, nice you got to collab with lionheart too
I never got to play the game, but loved the art style!
I might consider playing this game someday. I hope its good
For Strange Journey you should definitely play both of them. Redux is a controversial remaster but I like it
SMTIV = Love the story (UI needs improvements) SMT IVA = Hate the story (UI is a great improvement from IV).

I still haven’t played this ,I need to try it out thanks for the review! Did you pick up Sonic Frontiers?
This was an incredible review on a very polarizing game that I have mixed feelings on. While I don't hate the game, I greatly dislike a lot of aspects of the game (the 2nd half of the story, half of the characters, and the jade dagger in general)... and yet I find that I play this game the most because if the gameplay alone. Imo, it has THE BEST turn based combat in any RPG and I just kove coming back to play the game, maybe not experience it lol. I have a general agreement for the music as well, still great but not on the level of base IV (some of my favorites are Eastern Madness, Diving Powers theme, and Battle F6). Also one last question, did you ever tackle Twisted Tokyo? That was honestly my favorite part of the game.
I want to start Strange Journey in January, and to that I to spent this week playing SMT4A to the end.
Just finished SMT IV:A myself, and damn, it really made me rethink my opinion of SMT V. I don't hate it by any means, but it should've been so much better.
Strange journey Redux. Recomendado ;)
This game is so fun to play and look at it. Krishna was awesome
Love the green makeup Lady P
asahi revival aside, i loved this game so much, and the music always gets me
I Know I'm late as duck, but If you make a review of Strange Journey, I recomend you the original, the ambientation got really messed up on Redux and the Neutral ending kicks hard on that one, if you want Redux for the extras is ok, but I recomend playing both in order The original and the Redux, because they are completely different on both ambiance and story, like Alternatives instead of "remake and original"
Nanashi did the yuyu hakusho and died to even be considered a protaginist
In regards to Strange Journey. The original is fantastic, and it is closer to what they originally intended. Redux is fine overall, but it has lost a little of what the original had, it is both a story and visual issue and a game balance issue. So which one to get ? Honestly, Redux is your best option here, simply because it is far easier to find a copy of, if you can get your hand on the original I highly recommend that, but it can also be a bit expensive, a lot of people have issues with Redux, it sadly sometimes creates arguments online in comment sections and reddit..... Honestly, get both if you can, they do have quite a different vibe and feel, but getting both is not an option for everyone, and Redux is easier to get.
My favorite track is “Enemy of God”~!!!
I appreciate your cometary dusting pelvic Gaming
Generally speaking, I do prefer Apocalypse to vanilla on a mechanical level. Combat felt a bit more polished the map being a much lesser pain to navigate through are the biggest improvements that come to mind. I completely forgot about the walls obstacles though! What a silly addition that was. The final dungeon is an atrocity though, worst thing from the game for sure. It's when we get to the narrative where I feel more ho-hum about. Mind you I wasn't crazy over vanillas story either, but I feel what they tried to do here with the divine powers intervening in the usual law vs chaos sheanings alongside the theme of bonds which feels more appropiate for Persona than SMT. I didn't dislike the cast, I quite liked Nozomi actually, but it felt odd to be a more character driven story, which I believe the other spinoffs usually handled better anyhow. Either way, I liked it quite a bit more than 5 for what it's worth, but that speaks more on how underwhelmed I was with that game than anything.

OH, GAMEPLAY WISE??? SMT4A ALL DAY. EVERY DAY. Ez. It's not even a contest. I didn't mind the story of SMT4A, but I think because it didn't build up the new characters and it was set in a world I already 'saved' it didn't feel as deep? I wanted to LOVE Dagda, and he was fine. I didn't hate him, but didn't love him. I wanted him to DRIVE HOME that I was his puppet/slave/ I had no agency of my own. Oh lawrd that final dungeon... I can still hear the music ugh. But we seem to agree on the narrative side of things! Though I enjoyed the cast overall, it was different for SMT but a welcomed change!

I’m curious how smt 4 and 4A compare to SMT5 as I want to buy one of them and am not sure if they continue with story or if 5 is the best to experience first or last? Also it’s on sale for 30 bucks so I am leaning to start 5 and work backwards.

I can't speak for five, haven't played it. But I hear it takes after SMT III. Which I've personally come to appreciate over time. Now SMT4? That is hands down my FAVORITE. I love it SO MUCH. Great story, fun battle system, enjoyable characters. SMT4A, I think lacks in the story department in terms of delivery B U T polishes SMT4's gameplay. SMT4A from a gameplay standpoint? UNF.

Imo, V doesn't rlly have much of a story. It's there, but they never really develop it or it's characters, making it feel a little bare bones in the story department. As for the characters, it only really developed a few, with the rest either not really existing for most of the game, or not having any personality or personal reason to side with them. The few that they did sort of develop weren't really developed too much, and one character does a complete 180 and it kinda ruined his character. If you do end up liking this series, I recommend checking v out later on, but you should also look at more professional reviews (that don't just shit on it for not being persona 5 lmao) to form a better understanding. And while the story isn't great, it does have some neat side stories through side quests, some cool decisions to make during said side quests, and thanks to the new magatsuhi mechanic, the battles feel very fun and dynamic (even though it can feel limited in some ways) either way, I would personally recommend IV way more than V, but again, please watch some other reviews to get some other opinions on the game first. Edit: also I might be a little too harsh on the game because I really like the series, and after releasing the game around 5 years of waiting after the initial announcement, it kinda felt like Atlus dropped the ball compared to other games. I don't think this game is the worst game ever, but I just can't really recommend it as the first game in the series. I think other games like IV or III portray the themes of the series much better. However, it is also one of the most accessible game with some pretty good explanations of the core combat.

3 and 5 feel like a different series from 4 and 4A, because 3 and 5 are extremely minimalistic.
I liked both 4 games, better than 5. I was really hoping the series would continue with the style of 4.
Honestly regardless of the games actual writing at points the concept of "a bunch of salty polytheistic gods band together to fight the overpowered playground godmode christian god" is amazing.

SJ redux is much easier to play nowadays while the original has the good Kaneko art. They also have very different moods for the endings to be honest.

Im part of the few that will say play stranger journey og. Wasnt a fan of those smt remakes they pulled from the ds to 3ds and even with the improvements some just wernt needed and redux turned into a full blown anime with that added character. Plus those new endings just sweeten things a bit too much where the og keeps those twisted classic tolls and u playing that on the ds get to imagine just how fed up that game is
to become gods enemy-
I got this game just to try it out as am more of a Persona player & the demons in this game are ars....lol they have you doing all kind a thing & yet I still dnt get a demon (cuz I maybe not doing it right) still its a pain so its taking up dust for the time being whilst I enjoy my switch lol

ooo this Games great
After watching your review of Nocturne, you are probably going to hate SMTV. It's Nocturne but less bleak, and human characters who are somehow even weaker. For me the only interesting thing about SMTV was the war itself (unlike most games where the war has just started, in V it's been going on for 20 years) and what ideology I found myself being pulled toward as entire factions collapsed on themselves and wild cards tried to sneak in sudden wins. All of the humans suck, but decisions regarding the demons I found myself fretting over As for Strange Journey? Just play Redux. There's very little reason to play the original
Most people would say go for the original version of SJ, but I have to say go for Redux since the original's difficulty is extremely high

@@PelvicGaming Shiva was always my guy, too. Have you read the Bhagavad Gita? His true form is INSANE. I wish more games used Hindu lore, rather than the usual Greco-Roman and/or Germanic mythologies; the only other games I can think of off the top of my head are Skyblazer on the SNES, Rudra no Hihou also on the SNES, and Raji for newer systems, but those first 2 are more Vedic Mythology, which was the predecessor to Hinduism.

I actually loved SMT 4 Apocalypse. I thought 4 was damned good and the sequel did enough to not fall into the shadow of 4. After I completed SMT 5 and experienced the step back in story telling (don't get me started on the true neutral ending.), im look back to 4 and 4 Apocalypse and miss those games. Also the Divine Power's theme really is good. (I also adored all of the new music from 4 Apocalypse)

OMG! I was basically going to write the same thing! I was so disappointed by “SMT 5’s” story & characters. It was compared to “Nocturne”, but that game had more story and characterization in its first 2 hours than “SMT 5” did in its first 10 hours!
