I really appreciate your videos they have helped me in bringing my dad’s old reels back in use I heard it is recommended to grease the screws that are threaded to metal on reels that are used in saltwater In your experience is it really necessary?

The grease or oil drop on the screws is not necessary, but it is a good practice. From time to time these screws seize in the crossbars and reel seats. If you have the reel apart, take a moment and do the oil or grease. I use a drop of oil, but grease is fine as well - Dennis

As always, Great Video Dennis! I had one question about you not applying "Drag Grease" to the drags during servicing. Do these Shimano drags take drag grease or are they the Teflon drag washers?

This is a "hard surface" washer. Not sure if teflon or another variety. The grease will not absorb, so no sense using it - Dennis

I’m getting ready to fix my torium 16. The handle spins backwards. I guess I need an anti reverse bearing? Oh one suggestion for taking apart small screws I learned from working on RC Helicopters is to lay out a thin towel to keep things from bouncing or rolling off the workbench.

Possible. There is a back up a/r dog also on the reel as a fail safe. I would check that too. The A/R clutch could also be dirty or too oily. If you clean and dry it out, you may not need to replace it. Flush it with a penetrating oil and blow it out with air. If you have the a/r dog, make sure the tines of the form are grabbing the click plate. You may need to pinch them closed to reset the function - Thanks for asking - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle thank you! After watching your video I took my time and pulled it apart. The one way handle bearing was very dirty with rust in the grease and it was stiff. It ordered a new one and for fun cleaned this one out and greased with silicone grease I had on hand. I also pinched the anti reverse fingers and got it all back together. I cleaned the clutch plates and greased those but the drag was too soft even at full tight. So I pulled it apart and cleaned those really well. Broke one clutch plate but put it back together. I’ll have to get another one of those. But put it all back and seems to work great now. Thanks

Dennis , I have the torium 20 and wondering if I can replace the drag washers with carbon washers ? The original material ones in there now are brittle and snapped . Don’t know what that material is and hard to find . Hoping I can just add carbon washers to replace them . Thank you

Great video, thank you. I watched to see if anything might be missing from my Torium 16 that I just bought used, as it has an odd issue. I took it apart and everything seems to be there and assembled correctly. It's in good shape and seems to function fine EXCEPT that the drag won't tighten more than about 4-5 lbs. The drag washers were upgraded to Carbontex, so that shouldn't be the case, and the concave washers are good and not flattened. Is there a "common" cause for this problem in an otherwise fully functioning reel like this? Thanks again for the great instructional.

Sounds like you are possible missing a washer in the drag stack. Get the schematic and see if they reinstalled all of the washers when they did the changeover to Carbontex. They may have forgotten the cap washer. If you have additional washers, just add an extra to the stack and see if that makes a difference. Let me know if that helps - Dennis

I watched your video carefully (before asking) and it seemed that all was in order, but I will check that again. I have an extra pair of drag washers-- I'll try adding one of those to the stack just to see if it's a "length" issue on the main crank shaft. I'll let you know. Thanks for the reply!

@@2ndChanceTackle Ok I did a thorough check of the reel, referred to the schematic and your video. Nothing seems to be missing. I looked at the star drag wheel and when tightened down fully, there was still a small gap between it and the frame as it should, indicating that there wasn't a washer missing and the star might be bottoming out. But to be sure, I added another drag washer to the shaft and this was too much, and didn't affect the drag power at all. All of the relevant internals seem to be there as well-- all of the spacers and Carbontex washers are all there. I just can't understand why it won't give any drag resistance. It's in great shape inside and out. I've used a Torium before and the stopping power is excellent, and one of the reasons I bought this one. I've never seen this in a reel before.

Hi Dennis, Your videos helped me a lot. I really enjoy to watch them. I just got a second hand torium 14 for myself and the first thing what I noticed, the handle knob is really tight (frozen). Is there any way to take the handle assembly apart to clean it? Or just try to free it up by soaking it in some penetration oil or vinegar... . Could you please advise? Regards, Armand

You can; take that one apart. Sometimes a good soak with a penetrating oil like WD40 will help. You can order a replacement handle direct from Shimano for around $20 plus shipping. As an alternative, you can drill out the stud on the handle and replace it with an aftermarket knob. - Here is the link to the Shimano page fishshop.shimano.com/collections/tor14 - Dennis

Cheers, I would like to try to take it apart. I removed the side cap of the knob, but i didnt find any screw at the end of handle knob shaft. It seems it is riveted. How could i take off the handle knob? Regards, Armand

It I was unclear with the last note due to the typo, I am sorry. You cannot remove the handle knob as there is no screw or bolt set up. It is pressed on to the handle shaft. The only way to remove the knob is to drill it out from the back side of the handle shaft and then replace it with an aftermarket knob upgrade - Dennis

Yes - it is stuck in the case. Flood the rim of the bearing along the case with a penetrating oil to help free up the dirt and debris that is trapping the clutch shell in it. That clutch can be removed by pushing the shell in towards the gears. You can try tapping it with a screwdriver and small hammer and alternate the tapping from side too side to help free it up. - Dennis

I am not sure, but the design on model rarely changes by much as the introduce the newer versions. Best to check the schematics, but my guess is that it did not change much - Dennis

Dennis, I sent you a questionllast month and never received a reply. I can not get my free spool to function; the lever will notdis engage the spool, nor can the spool be removed from the case. Could the spool gear be corroded or frozen on the notched end? i did not try to force it.

Sorry I did not reply! The pinion gear is likely frozen to the spool shaft or the stud on the free spool lever may be broken off. If the pinion gear is frozen to the spool, the yoke will not be able to move it in or out. to get to free spool. If the eccentric stud is broken, it will not be able to move the jack to push and pull the yoke in and out to release the pinion gear. You will need to take the reel apart to determine which piece is broken or seized - Dennis

I've heard the dogs can be upgraded on these gray versions.

If you replaced these with Carbontex washers, which are thinner that the originals, you may not have enough clearance between the star adjuster and the housing. Does you reel turn freely when the drag is backed off? if so, you may need to add an additional tension washer of the original washers to build it up for clearance

Make sure that the earned washers are in the slot of the main gear. If the washers are sitting up high in the stack, you may have the bridge jamming against the side plate

Question when putting my reel back together note ( carbontex washers so no grease ) why am I loosing drag pressure?

Is the stack installed correctly? It sounds like you have slip in there somewhere. Iwould check the parts installed against the schematic to make sure they are in the right order. The schematic can be found at fishshimano.com if you don't have it - Dennis

Which way do the tension washers go, any idea? Really cant tell from the scumatics

Any way you like (not joking). These are concave. You can nest them, put them face to face, or put them back to back. The tension washers provide varying degrees of tension and sensitivity to the star adjuster. If you don't want a lot of flexibility, nest them by putting the concave all to one side. If you want more variability, go face to face or back to back - Dennis

Hi Dennis, I wanted to change the bearings and ran into two problems. For the bearing on the side plate, I got the pentagonal spring out but the bearing wouldnt release. Do younknow why this is? Also my spool wouldnt come out so I couldnt replace the main bearing. I had both ends loosened when I tried this but couldnt understand why it wouldnt just pop out like in your video. Any help is appreciated! Thanks Eddie

The bearings sit tightly in the case. You may need to get a small hook or pick like a dental tool to insert through he bearing hole and pull up from under the bearing to free it. If you spool is not coming out from the gear side, then the shaft is probably stuck to the pinion gear. Try using a penetrating oil to free it. Dennis
