    Thank you, Sir Dennis!! Got an offer to buy one mounted on an old Kmart Ocean Side 9 foot rod. Took it without knowing anything but the simple usage specs of the 309. Watched this video around 20 times to engrave it deep in my brain during the maintenance session. Excellent informative video. Endlessly grateful for your prowess and desire to share the wealth! I might add that if you do get one of these reels and it's pretty gunked up, take a toothpick and plunge all of the oil ports on the cap, adding reel oil/bearing oil to flush any accumulated debris and old lubes grease. Some of the balls may be stuck, and to fix that problem I just took a flathead screwdriver and layed it flat on the ball and tapped it with a heavier object like a 1 ounce bank sinker. Knocked em loose and was able to flush them out. Keep the history alive!

    I like the way you do the worm gear with just oiling it. Doing it that way to me keeps it cleaner for a longer period of time because in the past when I've used grease although good grease as far as quality was used it seemed like a magnet for debris to collect in the worm. After awhile it became sluggish or even jerky feeling to the point of wanting to lock up on a fast running fish n break the line off or even bend the guide. Anyway thanks for the video I've learned alot from you in just a short time. I always use a lighter oil now to keep that worm clear n smooth. Thanks again for taking the time to put these videos out. Have a good day.

    Another great video as always. l have a couple of the maroon side plated 309. Also have a black plated 209 and another couple for parts and a couple of older no. 9. They're more difficult to cast than my Abus but easier and more economical to service.

  • @2ndChanceTackle

    @2ndChanceTackle

    5 жыл бұрын

    Agree. These were not meant as casting reels. It takes a lot of energy to turn all of the line guide parts from the spool through the idler gear to the worm gear to the worm to the line guide. That is energy that can make casting difficult and sacrifices distance. The others, like Abu and Shimano, are more efficient. The 209, and 309 are really for drop fishing and trolling.

After watching this video and dozens of others from you I'm going to keep and eye out for one of these, specifically a 309 because of the level wind for a beginner and toughness you mentioned, I love recycling and I can't see any real improvement with modern reels to justify buying new ... beginners ignorance? Thank you. There are a lot of light weight or "advanced" design reels that have been introduced in the 30?? years since the 309 debuted. This reel is a classic and still brings in the big fish. I like to compare it to the Daiwa Sealine 47H. They are durable and enduring. The Warfare, Squall and other newer varieties are fine reels. Let's see if they stand the test of time! - Dennis

    Your videos are great. I’ve learned so much from them. I had a 309 that I use for bottom fishing for cod and other bottom fish. It has the newer aluminum spool. I have a question about the 3 piece metal spools. I heard from various online sites that if you fish the 3 piece metal spools with monofilament line, the pressure from the mono causes these multi piece spoils to break apart. Have you seen this happen with three piece spools from any penn reel?

  • @2ndChanceTackle

    @2ndChanceTackle

    5 жыл бұрын

    The three piece spool is an older design. I have had a couple that were broken. Initially, it drove me crazy with problem diagnosis as I thought it was bad drag washers, but eventually, I realized one side of the spool was spinning. I don't know if monofilament/pressure is the cause. I suppose these spools are old enough that they used the linen line before mono?? At any rate, the one piece spool would be better. - Dennis

    Nice video and very helpful. I have fished here and there but this year (2020) I got really in to it. My father passed away almost 10 years ago and he deep sea fished. My mother is still living and I have been taking care of her yard work since my father passed. This year I came across my fathers fishing gear 10 years later in the shed and my mom said it is yours so I bought it home and found 5 different size Penn reels inside the tackle box. One of the reels was the Penn 309 level wind reel but the leveling guide was not on the reel and was in a plastic bag with wrench that came with the reel. Was wondering why my father took off the leveling guide?

  • @2ndChanceTackle

    @2ndChanceTackle

    4 жыл бұрын

    Chances are that one of the pieces in the drive train broke. Check the gear on the back to the spool, the plastic idler gear in the side plate, the worm gear including the tracks and the line pawl. I would bet one of those pieces failed and your dad decided to make it a straight conventional reel without the line guide in order to keep it fishing, rather than getting it repaired. If you want to restore the function, parts are still available through Mysticparts.com - Dennis

    Thanks for all these great repair videos, don't know how many I have already watched already!. A question on the Penn 309. I recently purchased an older reel - much like the one seen in this repair. Overall, the reel is in real great condition. However, when I hold onto the star wheel and gently pull the wheel away from the frame, there is a noticeable sideways play between the straw wheel and frame. After now watching this video a few times, I am confident enough to the repair apart. However in doing so, what can you suggest to look for in regards to this sideways play?

    Gary - the plate (I am assuming you mean the side trim ring) is probably stuck on with dried dirt/grease etc. Soak the side plate with a good spray of penetrating oil like WD40. Let it sit 15-30 minutes to seep in. Next, I would use a utility knife with a strong blade and slip it in between the back of the trim ring and the plate. Careful, it is a razor knife! you should be able to get it started using good pressure to push in. That should separate the pieces - Dennis

    That line will put more pressure on the line guide than normal mono or braid. You don't mention how it is stacking - One side or the other or middle. Check to make sure the line guide is perpendicular to the worm gear and not bent to one side or the other. Also check the worm gear tensioner on the gear side plate. You can take any slack out to the side to side play if needed. Those are the only components that would affect line spooling other than a broken tooth on the idler gear. You may want to check that last if all else is OK - Dennis

  • @2ndChanceTackle

    @2ndChanceTackle

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes it is repairable. The level wind flop is probably because the drive gear is not locked down on the spool and is wandering and causing play. You will need to replace that clip. The side to side spool play may be because the drive side bearing is broken. part 27-60 may need to be replaced to fix your problem is you have tightened down the side plate bearing on the non-gear side. • @2ndChanceTackle

    All have a different formulation to treat friction and provide smooth operation. They are all OK for reels, but each has its own charatistics and you just need to find one that you like. Start with the manufacturer's, like Penn, then go to the specialities like ReelX and then experiment with the others like 3 in 1 and gun oil. Personally, I like the ReelX product - Thanks Doug - Dennis

    Yes. If any part of the level wind assembly - Line guide, worm, idler gear, spool drive, pawl, etc. breaks, you can just remove the line guide mechanism and it can be fished as a regular conventional reel without the line guide. If you do that, be sure to leave the line guide shield in place as it will provide some stability as a cross post.

    Yes - the two bolts go through the holes in the reel seat with the threaded portion sticking through the bottom. The hex nut goes on next to hold the bolts firm to the reel seat. Those bolts then straddle the rod when you mount the reel. Next the plastic cupped piece goes over the bolts and finally, the wing nuts tighten down on the plastic piece to hold the reel firm to the rod - Thanks for asking - Dennis

    I don't know for certain, but any Penn side plate screw or that era - Long Beach, Peer, Jigmaster, Surfcaster, etc will fit. They were all the same diameter and thread profile for cross bars and real seats - Those screws are still available through Mysticparts.com. - Dennis

    Hey Dennis, I’ve got a level wind 309 and when put on free spool it rattles giving some friction when casting. Any idea why that is? Thanks in advance

    Only guesses Frank, since I cannot see the reel. First thought is that there is a broken part, possibly a spring. Here are a few checks - does the reel turn freely when engaged and not is free spool, or does it bind? Is the spool tensioner on the bearing side too tight? - There should be a little side to side play in the spool when set properly. You may need to remove the side plate and do a visual inspection. With the side plate off, does the gear side turn easily in both modes? (free spool and engages? Is the spool gear moving in and out when you trip the free spool lever? Is the eccentric spring (attached to the free spool lever on the inside, broken? Those would be some common causes. Sorry I can't be more specific. - Dennis

    2nd Chance Tackle could it be possibly that I took off the level wind with the screws? The reel reels fine for the most part but one of the screws that I had where the level wind was screwed in with fell out. I think it’s called l.s worm bearing

    It is a possibility that if you pulled the screw from the idler gear (white plastic gear on bearing side plate) that you would get the rattle. Is your level wind function working? If it is not, then that would most likely be your problem

    Hey Dennis, I’m running into a real brain buster. The reel runs incredibly smooth now. But I’m running into a small amount of friction from the spool I think. However… it goes away entirely when the whole reel is upside down (stand side up). It sounds weird but I’ve repeated it 10 times and it’s consistent. Any ideas on what might be causing that friction only when it’s stand side down?

    First guess would be a bearing in the side plate. is there play in the spool when you try to move it front to back on a plane? There should be play side to side, but no play front to back. If there is play front to back, it could be a bad side plate bearing

    @@2ndChanceTackle no noticeable play forward and aft. I did manage to fix it by applying tension to the point that there is no side to side play. But it’s a really tight balancing act of tension vs unwanted friction.

    Upon further inspection, I think you’re right. The L/H plate is making contact with the spool on the lower portion. However if I apply upward pressure the friction disappears. Indicating the bearing is probably at fault. Thanks again for the content, and the learning experience!
