    Hi Dennis, I have the identical reel. I went on a deep sea outside fishing trip yesterday, stupidly forgot to check my equipment day before, and, guess what? my reel didn't work, didn't freewheel, didn't wind in. Luckily we had spare rods and reels, caught so many fish! Anyway, after looking at your video, I started to pull mine apart, you make it look so easy, but easy it wasn't, screws holding ring in frozen, nothing an impact driver wouldn,t fix, later those screws were greased!. Inside was corroded really bad, gave a good clean with steel wool, greased, I didn't have marine grease, just HTP Bearing grease, but that should be ok, used it on my boat for years, all back together, working just great, thanks a lot, Dennis, Barrio.

    Watched the video, felt confident, took reel apart without checking if it worked because braided line was tied to frame post and assumed it worked, not my reel. Reel clean, no grease buildup, it was lacking lubrication, although bearings were lubricated. Lubricated, pinion, jack, yoke, eccentric, stuff I saw lacked lubrication, operated eccentric, turned handle, pinion rotated freely. Satisfied reel worked, put it back together, turn handle, spool rotates one turn then locks up? Did not touch drags, star drag wheel worked and drags worked. One of the first things to check that I learned from you. I am just going around looking for reels to work on.

    Lots of guys used these to troll for striped bass on the Chesapeake. I wasn't a big fan and ran Shimano Tekotas instead. Little more expensive but I think it was worth it. Funny thing is I now only have two Tekota 800's now for wire fishing bunker spoons and have 6 Penn Squall 30LW's for my general trolling. I'm not the biggest level wind guy at all, in fact I hate it, but I usually only troll when I have friends or family on the boat and the level wind saves me a lot of headaches. Great video nonetheless, I'm sure tons of guys still run these.

    Wow. First, pull the pawl out of the line guide, that is probably where it is tangled up. Remove the cap below the line guide and the pawl should come loose. Once out, the rag should be able to be worked free. If that doesn't work, you would need to remove the worm gear to try and untangle that way. Of course it you want to try and get crazy, use a lighter to burn the rag to ash and that should free it as a last resort. (No, I am not kidding) but if you try this, please be safe! - Dennis

My question is should I remove that hard red washer or just add the extra drag washer to it ?

Had to order a worm for the line guide mechanism as it was damaged and operates intermittently. When I took off the right side plate I observed a lot of grease on the the main gear, also under and around the eccentric jack. I noticed when you reassembled your reel, you only applied grease on the pinion gear but not on the main gear or under the eccentric jack. Could you confirm which is the correct method? Thank you in advance.

    I generally just do the pinion/spool gear with grease. As it turns, it transfers to the main gear. The eccentric should get oil, either by removing the free spool lever nut, or a quick squirt under the spring when you have the reel apart. Thanks for asking - Dennis

    Another wonderfully helpful video. I have a Penn 320 GTi and the line slips off the reel even when the drag is fully tightened. This happens when I am reeling in line while fishing for halibut with a 1# lead weight. The line slips while reeling in, in jerky movements, feeling like a gear or two is slipping inside. I suspected the main gear and/or the pinion gear as the cause, and disassembled the reel only to find that there is no apparent damage to either gear. Do you have any ideas of what could be causing this? Thank you!

  • @2ndChanceTackle

    @2ndChanceTackle

    This sounds like classic braid slip. Are you using braided line on your reel? If you are, did you back the reel with monofilament before loading the braid. If not, my guess is that the braided line is causing the problem and that it has nothing to do with the drags. Let me know if the is the case - Dennis

    @@scottellerby1220 I don't want to make this too elementary, but is the pinion gear (small gear) installed with the slot facing towards the spool? • @scottellerby1220

    @@2ndChanceTackle Yes, the slot is facing toward the spool. Is it possible that the teeth on the main brass gear and the teeth on the pinion gear are worn just enough that they allow slippage when the reel is under pressure? That's the only explanation I've been able to come up with after examining all the parts closely. You've seen so many reels, that I'll jettison that theory if you haven't personally seen this type of fault.

    Another possibility: Could the dog be slipping on the ratchet gear? The crank catches but the catch slips when you pull hard on the line and you see the spool turn and the crank handle turn.

    I think you may beed to add a washer. Carbontex washers are thinner than the originals, so the stack would not be as high. There is a chance the problem is easy to fix. Take off the handle and the star drag adjuster and then remove the gear sleeve that sits on the shaft. Make sure there is no broken line or debris that could be clogging the threads on the shaft, and then reinstall the sleeve, tenth adjuster and finally the handle. Make sure you do not cross strip the threads with the star adjuster when installing. That should fix your issue - Dennis

    My spool and shaft won’t come loose from the side with the gears. Any ideas?

    Yes- you likely have a pinion gear that is frozen to the spool. Watch this video on the Jigmaster. You likely have the same problem and this video shows how to repair it. Your 310 is different internally, but this will get the side plate free. You can watch haw to set your 310 side plate here kzread.info/dash/bejne/dqiTzc6qoNngnrg.html. Dennis

    This one is unique and not shared with many reels. The # is 24-320 and I believe the 24-970, which is the round International Baitcaster, will also fit this reel
