Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Dead Cat - John Dolan

So much communicated in only 6 paragraphs. One of the occasional divergences from my lane. I hope it can mean something to you.
The War Nerd (aka Gary Brecher, aka John Dolan) is incredibly engaging. If you're interested in conflict, literature, science fiction, history or other things you should look into him. His recent prose translation of The Iliad is well worth your time. Links to text and other things below.

I don't know what John was trying to communicate with this story, but I can't stop thinking about the rundown houses along the busy streets in Tuscarawas County Ohio - these tilted, peeling Victorian-style townhouses two steps from the street gutters. Exposed, hopelessly exposed. How could anyone sleep in there are feel comfortable? How could anyone raise kids in there? Who would buy/rent one and think 'Yes this is where I will spend the rest of my life". Old people sitting on the front porch of these grey paint-stripped houses. Are they happy with how their lives have gone? I don't know but I would have related a lot to Sherlock as a teenager walking past these houses, their foundations themselves tilted (imagine living in a house with the floors themselves tilted), feeling hopeless and frustrated, scared that this would be where I would get old and die.
