Shellac Primer , Zinsser

This stuff is amazing! If you want to paint a glossy surface and you want to make sure the final coat of paint will stick, use a shellac base primer.
Made in part from the "lac" bug of some remote parts of the world, this primer provides EXCELLENT adhesion and EXCELLENT stain and odor blocking.
It dries fast, has kind of a powerful unique smell during painting, and is really thin. The paint fumes, although strong, quickly go away once this primer dries. Always use good ventilation and a proper respirator.

Thanks for the video. How about clean up? All my trim in the house were painted with oil based and I want to repaint with water based paint- so I'm looking for a primer. Also what type of paint you recommend for trim that doesn't have shine?

I just purchased my first home and the previous owners put white oil based paint over a raw oak door casing. The tannins are bleeding through pretty bad so my door frames are basically streaky orange colors now. Can I put an exterior shellac over the oil based paint then go over it with an exterior latex for my final color?

I just picked this up. I’ve primed an old interior wall several times with killz. It’s a wall made up of repurposed wood that was in the house we bought. I’m praying this works. I also called under the trim and it turned black for some reason, so I’m praying this will work for that as well because the kilz didn’t do nothing but killz my pocket for $95! Lol!

I want to paint some old dining room chairs using a light coloured chalk paint. The chairs seem to have been stained previously, so I'll need something to prevent bleed-through. I used Zinnser's Cover Stain primer a couple of years ago but found it quite tricky to paint with, being quite a thick paint. Would you recommend that I go for the BIN primer this time. Would a single coat of the BIN be enough to prevent any bleeding ... just asking as you said sometimes a second coat will weaken the first coat if more than one application is made. thank you

We bought some posts for the outside of the house that holds the roof down to the ground that cost us $600 I was told to use Bullseye 123 which I did after I finished all of the work which was a lot the bleed-through from The Pinewood came through I am in the Mist now of stripping all off the Paint & primer off of my pieces and I've been told that Ben primer is the best solar going to have to use that I think there should be a something wrote down about how Bullseye 123 does not do the job in all cases this will save me a lot of time and energy and frustration thank you for sharing have a great weekend and God bless

I just used this to paint a night stand I heard so many good things about it. I shook it up about 10 minutes before I used it came out of the can like cottage cheese, now I have to sand it down again to get rid of the lumps it left. And in some places it bled through I paid over $17.00 which I thought was very expensive. I will never use this product again. I painted a black dresser without sanding using spray chalk paint which did a better job at almost half the cost.

Hello I was wondering do you think I could add pigment to this primer. I would like a vibrant undertone. If I could add pigment to this primer, that would be amazing!

The best part about this and other shellac based primers is their ability to hide odors. If your subfloor under the carpet and pad is smelly because of pet urine or mildew, this should take care of it in most cases. You can also use it on walls of houses where there was a smoker. I haven’t tried that but I’ve heard people say that it got rid of the smell even in houses where someone smoked for 20 years in them.
