My nine year old son has ASD (Aspergers) and he knows how,to express emotions. In fact Sheldon reminds me of my son on so many levels. So, yes I truly believe he does have ASD. My son LOVES Sheldon! The Big Bang Theory is his favorite tv show. Remember people if you know one person with Autism, you know one person with Autism. No two are alike.

People talk about how Sheldons character and aspergers is exaggerated but it really isn't. My cousin has this and he's almost exactly like Sheldon. People have different cases and some people are a lot more severe than others. Some people just have a hard time reading others and like routine, and some are as severe or even more so than Sheldon.

I have AS and I'm 35 on the AQ test (32 is the threshold) so while I don't have severe Aspergers and I'm not bothered by sounds or textures and I don't stim, it is still there. It's a matter of degrees.

It's not 'exaggerated' as much as it's 'comedified'. You can be more severly autistic than Sheldon, but he only has it in manners and situations where it's funny to look at. And yes, that probably isn't how any real autistic person would behave.

My son is very similar to Sheldon in many ways. Everyone is affected different. There isn't a stereotypical Aspergers type. He loves this show and Young Sheldon as he actual understands his character.

I just looked up the symptoms of Asperger's Syndrome, and literally every single symptom/sign was literally Sheldon. One of the signs was having a fixation on something, and they even used trains as a example. But yeah, I definitely see Asperger's as highly likely, and it's nice for people who watch that have Aspergers to have someone representing them, and someone that they can relate to.

Sheldon literally made me cry a little in the beginning. I really would like to make things easier for others.

I have autism. I enjoy relating to Sheldon on some points. I think it's important for viewers to remember that those who have Asperger's/High functioning Autism are all very different. We are not all out of touch with other's emotions or dislike physical contact (Sheldon seems to have challenges in that area). My greatest wish is not to read other people's minds or to understand them but for them to simply accept me for who I am without labeling me.

It's like why I always bring my phone to the toilet, because one time I didn't do it, I got locked inside the toilet for an hour unable to ask for help. It's to anticipate things that could go wrong.

I've always thought this since the beginning. I love that they have developed his character in this way. His friends truly understand him and though they find him difficult at times, they will always support him

It is the official stance of BBT that Sheldon does not have Aspergers. However, Jim Parsons has said in many interviews that he believes the character does.

I love Jim Parsons but he also has said he never watched star trek. He's an actor and question if he means everything he blurts out in endless interviews. The producers and writes stated he doesn't. That it would be way to hard to write for a character with the syndrome.

I used to work as a assistant to a kid with aspergers. In an essay he wrote that he wished he had an Leonard who could explain the world to him and him to the world. To me it sums upp the difficulties he was going trough. He could really relate to Sheldon and even though Sheldon is on the reciving end of the comedy he loved the show.

The Man Being autistic doesn’t qualify you as a psychiatrist. You can’t state whether someone has autism or not just because you’re autistic. A trained person can.

Pretty sure everyone who knows what autism/aspergers is knew right from the first episode he had it. Bless his little heart. I know how he feels.

Because people with Aspergers can still socialize, it doesn't mean their incapable of having a social life. It just means it is a higher form of autism. It's is a disorder to do with the brain sensory, so every case is different depending on how the brain sensory was compromised. That's why ever person with aspergers is affected differently, you can't treat every person affected by it the same way.

+Always Learning Just because you can talk to someone does not mean it isn't difficult (e.g. what does the other person actually want you to say if they ask if they clothes looks okay: say what you think or lie and reassure them). Also socialising & talking are 2 different things especially if you don't know the person and don't have much control over the situation it can be exhausting.

The first time my family and I saw Sheldon, we joked about how they finally had a TV character like me. We had never heard of Aspergers at that point. I was recently diagnosed as being on the spectrum and love this show!!

I thought this was going to be something canon about the show, not just a fan theory. It's a pretty solid theory, though. Also, he has said many times, "I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested." This implies that the test concluded that he's NOT crazy, but he never says what the test says that he IS. He probably conveniently leaves out the fact that the test concluded he’s autistic. Pretty sneaky, Shelly. Edit: I changed “aspergers” to autism because that’s no longer an acceptable term

He definitely has Asperger Syndrome, but it doesn't mean that he is crazy. What people define as "crazy" actually means that someone who has a mental illness with psychotic tendency, at least this is the convention among psychiatrists and psychologists. Asperger Syndrome, which is in the autistic spectrum, which is part of neurodevelopmental disorder, in itself doesn't have psychotic tendencies. There are mental illnesses with psychotic tendency, schizophrenia is one of them. These illnesses are the ones people usually define as "crazy". So, Sheldon actually doesn't lie when he says he's not crazy.

I'm from Norway, and was diagnosed with asperger a couple of years back. It's kinda hard sometimes, because need things to be predictable and if that gets messed up, it's really frustrating. But thanks to support from friends and family, it's alot easier..

Sheldon is very relatable for most aspies. He possesses every single trait of an aspy and usually people like us don't possess every single trait

I actually relate strongly with Sheldon. He struggles the same way I do, he's fussy about things like I am and he has to have a routine like I do ... And that obsession with Super Heroes is me with Pikachu and anime in general. I lean more towards High Functioning Autism, but Aspergers and High Functioning Autism are extremely similar to each other. He's my favourite, because he gets normal people to understand how much we suffer.

The writers did not want to flat-out say he was autistic, because they didn't want to be accused of being insensitive or inaccurately portraying autism. However I think it's very obvious that he was. He said multiple times he's been tested and he's fine, but I'm waiting for the young Sheldon episode where we see that he was tested and Mary found out he was autistic and just lied to him

When I first watched the series I really couldn't stand Sheldon at all and was so annoyed by his habits and quirks. But later I realized the reason why I hated him so much was because he embodies all the things I hate about myself. And after finally coming to terms with my own problems and shortcomings, I began to like Sheldon as a character. In fact, now he is my favorite character of the show

+filip4900 I hear the word 'Mild' often said in relation to Aspergers, and I disagree with it. I wouldn't call it mild at all. Sure, there are those with a lesser and greater degree of it. It varies per person, and because of that I don't think any of us can truly rule out whether our own case of the condition is truly mild or high. We're all different as is our aspergers. :)

As a fan of the show i loved the clip you used for the lack of social skills. But as a resident doctor who has spent a fair share of time with Asperger's Syndrome and other Autism spectrum disorders patients and honestly made friends with a lot, the character of Sheldon Cooper either intentionally or unintentionally goes a long way in awareness of such disorders and more importantly the social recognition and acceptance. I am a huge fan of Jim Parsons and genuinely respect the writers and producers of Big bang theory.

I have autism in my family and yes he is so easy to relate to.

I was diagnosed with Aspergers when I was very young. My parents never told me that, however. I believe this worked to my benefit, as I have been able to overcome many of my deficits. Now, I am indistinguishable from someone who does not have any disability whatsoever. I received no help, instead I learned to adapt. I now am free of all identifiable symptoms that would express themselves externally. I still know that I have it, but that’s okay. (I have never met anybody with a story like this, that’s why I thought it was interesting enough to post.)

I was recently diagnosed with Asperger´s and ADD. And I´m still learing every day to live with it. Sheldon, Amy and Lenoard´s mother has steriotypical signs on Asperger´s syndrome. But they also show how different every person with that diagnos is. I for example do understand sarcasm, but can have trouble with understanding body language. And I love hugs! I can except a sudden change, if I know that there is a possibility the will be a sudden change. But if it´s to sudden change, I will have a minor panic attack.But what´s common with all us with asperger´s, is that we have a speacial subject that we are supersmart at and will get obsessed with. I like history, photogarphy and drawing. But I suck at math, because I have never had any intrest in that, so I don´t really care. :) And to sum it up. Yes, Sheldon is not crazy, as his mother says. He has undiagnosed Asperger´s Syndrome = he is super smart in the subject he finds intresting. :)

I have high functioning autism. I wasn't diagnosed until I was thirteen. However, I can tell when I look back on memories. It's always been hard to relate to others. Sheldon makes me smile. I understand him. I share a lot of quirks and traits with him. I can fully relate to the couch spot. I have favorite spots on multiple couches. I'm not as closed as Sheldon about. I will find somewhere else to if there's a large party. However, if someone steals my spot when there's not an event, I get upset. Often feeling like crying. I could leave rooms if my spot is taken. Sheldon's quirks make me smile and comfort me emotionally. I'm not alone.

My best friend who has Asperger's is fun to be with sometimes and a real pain in the butt at other times. But I can't deny he makes life interesting, and I can't imagine it without him.

Sheldon is a male with high functioning autism, women who have the same form show it in a more mild fashion, but can be even more affected by it. I am one of those women, and I find it comforting that when I identify with someone in mainstream media t isn’t someone that I can’t look up to as a role model.

Sheldon may have aspergers but it is only mild which would explain his lack of knowledge on social interactions and also his "vulcan like hearing" basically he pays more attention and it would also explain his maturity level for Asperger people tend to develop slower socially. Besides that he is clearly a hypochondriac. He also seems to be obsessive compulsive.

No such thing as "mild" Aspergers Because everyone is affected by it differently, and copes with it differently, it seems milder, but some people with ASD or Aspergers can cope better with different elements of life than some others, and vice versa. Some are high functioning amongst high functioning, meaning that they have an easier time expressing their feelings. But feel things VERY acutely, typically, as well as having the obvious, typical, affects-all kind of symptoms. Some are non-verbal, meaning they really struggle with expressing themselves. ETC.

if they where to say he has autism and some traits upset people or are seen as inaccurate then it's on the writers...them saying he has it would make it so they have to make his character restricted to what is seen as stereotypical aspergers. more work then saying he doesn't have it... which is bullshit... he is on the spectrum u can look at the dsm and see he has it... but he's based on a physicist... who a lot are on the spectrum... so it just makes sense that in making him like the nerdy physicist he ends up being a character with autism traits. I'm on the spectrum...i can spot an aspie from a mile away

My twin brother and dad have aspergers syndrome, and when I watched this show (sometimes with my mom) we both noticed how relatable Sheldon is to them

I love this show so much! I’m on the autism spectrum and can relate to Sheldon, especially when he gets overwhelmed by change and has difficulty with sarcasm (I get jokes now but used to take EVERYTHING literally growing up). I also struggle with some physical contact and am asexual, like Sheldon was in the first few seasons. The only thing I don’t like is how the characters seem to mock his idiosyncratic behavior. That’s why I wish there were more moments when characters like Penny try to understand his perspective, it is beautiful. I get compared to Sheldon and Amy a lot since I have some characteristics of both but I’m not a savant genius who is as rigid as Sheldon. So yeah, everyone on the spectrum is different!

I'm a psychology student and I did a class entirely on the autism spectrum and Sheldon does show some signs of Aspergers although the DSM5 doesn't see Aspergers as it's own thing now. His signs are exagerated but they are there I think you should have included the fact that he has issues with reading faces because a well known symptom of Autism disorders is that they cannot make eye contact, A man with Aspergers even spoke at one of my lectures and he said he doesn't even know his wifes eye colour without people telling him what it is because he cannot look her in the eyes. It's quite interesting really autism in general is really fascinating.

My little sister has aspergers, and after seeing this and reading the comments and can see the many similarities. She doesn't quite get emotions and doesn't quite get when to stop. And if I could have the abilities to help her I would because it's the most heart wrenching thing to see your little sister get bullied for things she can't control

He acts exactly like my 7 year old. Everything down to the chair.

I'm asperger myself but thank god nobody understood it until me at 35 years old. That was good because nobody put me a label and I was forced to mitigate my autism in order to interact with neurotypicals...it was very suffering but I succesfully re-right my mental programmation in order to change priorities and attitudes. I'm not like Sheldon anymore, I'm just a bit still closed on showing feelings, but with a bit of weed the emotional part of me flows out and I gain all my remaining potential, in fact I recently reached the fully spiritual enlightenment, but the journey is just starting from here. Now i have so much more to learn in the parallel universe of the neurotypicals....

I love that first clip in this, it gets me every time! I just wanted to comfort Sheldon.

I was diagnosed to be on the spectrum when i was 9. I've always been the oddball, and never really felt like i belong anywhere. But sheldon is a character that i can completly relate to. He's awkard socially, he has a hard time understanding emotions, he gets extremely fixated on one subject. Just like me. I'm not to Sheldon's extent, but my Gravity Falls Obsession is now infamous. (Still wear my Dipper hat with pride!) I love Sheldon's character, and appreciate having someone i can relate to.

I have as Aspergers and it it really frustrates me when I'm trying to correct people like a teacher and they think I'm being as people would say a smart ass

I'm on the autism spectrum. This really hits heart felt. I feel exactly like Sheldon.

I always found sheldon as a character i relate with and the issues he has r very similar to mine well idk if I should call em issues but im really grateful for this show representing sheldon’s character which is not popular in tv shows

I don't see this as much of a caricature of AS, and even if it is, the entire series has huge caricatures. No one that lives with their mother is as crazy as Howard was. But my brother, who has AS (as do I) is about as close as you can get to Sheldon. He looks up to him so goddamn much. He's got his superhero shirts, a shirt reading "Knock knock knock, Penny (X3)" and quotes him daily. He inspires him to learn as much as he can about code (so that he can make video games), which is what my brother obsesses over rather than physics. Thank you, Jim Parsons.

I also have OCD, and on Asperger's​ spectrum so I can relate to Sheldon. I enjoy repetitive behaviors and dislike change hugely, but I'm not a prodigy like Sheldon but he does make me feel there is hope for someone like me with bad social interaction skills.

I love Penny and Leonard as like Sheldon's second parents ! Its so cute

I've known that I have Asperger's since I was 11-12 years old and I've always seen a lot of myself in Sheldon. I pay very close attention to detail, I've never been socially adept, I take a very strong interest in certain things and follow them through to the end, I have a veritable arsenal of random facts at my beck and call, and I prefer a social and physical environment that stays relatively constant.

My parents told me that they always new that there was something different about me. i found out i had aspergers when i was 6 or 7. From that day on i hated my self always thinking of my self as a freak and an alien in some ways. Always desperately wishing to God to take it away. Some times it's still hard for me to believe and i always ask myself why just me and not my brothers and sister. If i had one wish it would to not have this disability. Sometimes when i was little i would hurt the people around me and i have felt terrible for it to this day. It doesn't seem funny when you are making your pinching or biting your mum until she bleeds ( i don't do that any more and still feel terrible for it). I can't speak for the others like me but for me it is so hard making friends and hanging on to them. It makes me cry when I watch something about aspergers but i still do it to learn more about myself. Whenever my step mum or anyone else is trying to talk to me about it, i can hear a voice in my head screaming [ SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU DONT KNOW ANYTHING!] because just because they read a book or looked it up doesn't mean that they fully understand. I hate myself and my life i wish i could be anyone or anything else but me because f this thing.

I myself have aspergers syndrome too. I was diagnosed at 3 years of age with the condition and yes, as i grew up, my aspergers syndrome did intend to cause problems. Though as i got older, i got some therapy to cope with speech and my own self, eventually i was in tune more, and i even had help with teachers and special needs assistants during my time in Primary and Secondary School. (Irish/English term for High School). Without the therapy, i possibly would be unable to keep myself in check.

I'm autistic & I can relate to Sheldon Cooper in many ways.

I have Asperger Syndrome too. I had it since I was two, but it was confirmed in 2014

You're born with it, there's no known cause, but you can't "have it since [you] was 2". So... not saying your lying, only that a little research would have made your story more plausible.

Alicia Clark. Well according to my parents, they noticed that there was something different about me when I was two years old. They had me checked by a doctor in 2014, but didn't tell me until 2017. On the bright side, I can say one of Sheldon's famous lines and have it be true. I can say "I'm not crazy. My mother had me tested."

Ever since I learned what Asperger Syndrome (or Autism in general) was, I've been picking up that vibe from Sheldon's character. I'm glad someone else has picked up on this.

Right when I saw this scene on TV I thought, "Oh my God, he has aspergers. How have I not seen this?"

you forgot the fact that Sheldon always telling people facts they don't want to hear and that he has an eidetic memory ...

I’m 19 with asperger syndrome and I was diagnosed when I was 11

I have Aspergers; I'm in a 1-year music program and my ear training teacher has more-or-less forbidden me from giving the answers to nites, intervals and chords because I've gotten so many. Also, my Intro to Improv teacher said in front of the class "Sarah is a walking, talking encyclopedia" after I started spewing out theory facts; I'm exempt from that class this semester because I took a night school music program that included theory, and graduated from the program with a 93% average.

I would love to read people's mind but Sheldon doesn't have Aspergers. I have Aspergers and I have met people with Aspergers just like me but we don't act like Sheldon does. I express emotions and I try to cheer someone up when they are down and there's so many things that i don't do that Sheldon does like "That's my seat!". People with Aspergers are not that bad like Sheldon is. Will people please stop comparing Sheldon with Aspergers because it's ridiculous.

I can point out things he does that I don't do and Sheldon is an oxi-moron who is selfish, oblivious, and picky and people with Aspergers are not like that. I can see sarcasm when it's noticable and yes I do have trouble with social skills but not like Sheldon does. So please STOP comparing Sheldon with people like me.

Narcissism has a much better fit to the sheldon character than aspergers. Narcissistic personality disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for admiration and a lack of empathy for others. But behind this mask of ultra confidence lies a fragile self-esteem that's vulnerable to the slightest criticism. The sheldon character also has a very strong vindictive streak, in that if he is not able to get his own way he will strike out and manipulate others to get his own way. This has been shown in several plot lines. This i would tender as a true characterization of the sheldon character, and we can readily laugh at a Narcisssit. It would not be appropriate to be laughing at an asperger sufferer, i mean surely we would not poke fun at some one in a wheelchair, or a handicapped child, in this group we should class aspergers syndrom.

You can take the MBTI test online. It's pretty accurate. It will give you your four letter combination.

I KNEW Sheldon had Aspergers! I knew it from the very first episode! I have Aspergers myself, and I can understand many of Sheldon's quirks that his friends don't understand, such as his OCD tendencies, his inability to recognize sarcasm, and occasionally his misinterpretation of people's emotions and feelings.
