Today we are shearing the sheep that lambed in March. We have weaned the lambs and the ewes are at an ideal stage to shear their wool. The summer months are approaching and the weather is getting warmer so we need to ensure they don't get too hot therefore the wool will be shorn and sold. We get lot's of interest from people on the topic of shearing and many are too far to stop by and watch this in person so we are sharing this short video to let everyone see how it's done.
We don't shear this flock of sheep before lambing because we lamb inside the coverall and the temperatures are too cold to do shear. It would place too much stress on the ewe 4 to 6 weeks prior to lambing. This time of year, here in Canada, would require the ewes energy to stay warm rather than go towards feeding the lambs still growing inside of them. We crutch these ewes instead of shearing in the month of January/February and shear in the month of June.

We hired Tyler Armstrong to shear the sheep flock this year. He has 10 years experience as a sheep shearer. It took approximately 4 minutes per Ewe to shear and he provided the handling system.
