Bringing In $80K A Year Shearing Sheep in Texas | On The Job
Katie McRose, 26, and her wife Darian travel around Texas to sheer sheep, llamas and alpacas. They founded their business, Right Choice Shearing, in 2019. This year, they expect to bring in at least $80,000 servicing over 575 farms.

Katie McRose met her future business partner and wife, Darian, in preschool in Seguin, Texas.
“We were best friends. We totally hit it off. Our first date was at Chuck E. Cheese playing in the ball pits,” Katie McRose jokingly tells CNBC Make It with a laugh. “We started dating in high school, but that was all completely in the closet. And then after high school, after a very traumatic process, we finally came out in college. And we just got married in 2019.”
Together the two make up one of the few, if not the only, wife-and-wife sheep, llama and alpaca shearing businesses in the country.
“Being a sheep shearer is a minority in the United States. And then being a woman is definitely its own subcategory. And then to be a gay woman, I don’t think I know another gay woman, sheep shearer besides my wife,” says McRose. “The business would not be as successful as it is today without my wife, because I might be the brawns (and maybe some of the brains) but she does all of the organization and makes sure that everything runs smoothly.”
Between February and June 2021, the couple made over $80,000 and served roughly 480 farms.
Getting the job
At just 26, McRose already has more than a decade of experience shearing.
“I never thought that I would be a sheep shearer when I was growing up. I had no idea that something like that existed. But when I was 14 years old, I watched somebody shear a show goat and we bought the equipment to shear a show goat. And my mom was on Craigslist looking for someone to shear our llamas and alpacas and saw this lady needed her sheep sheared to my mom was like, ’You know how to do that, right? I was like, ‘Yeah, totally,’” remembers McRose. “So I went out there with a friend and it took us four hours to do seven sheep. They looked horrible. They looked like chewed-up Tempur Pedic pillows.”
She made a grand total of $35 during that first long job. Today, their business, Right Choice Shearing, typically charges a $40 set-up fee and charges between $5 and $45 per “head” - depending on the breed and the number of animals.
But what at first felt like “flying by the seat of your pants” later became a marketable skill for survival.
“My senior year of high school, I separated with my family,” says McRose. “And I had to figure out how I was going to be able to afford to go to college. So I worked four jobs and I picked up shearing again. I started building that shearing business when I was in college.”
Both Katie and Darian studied animal science at Texas A&M. Shearing sheep helped cover their costs.
“I think that the most I made in college was around $30,000 working part-time,” she recalls. “My [grandparents] did help me - $1,000 here, $1,000 there - but everything else was completely out of my pocket. I paid for the dorm that I lived in, paid for all the tuition and books. And I did come out debt-free, which was really nice.”
After graduating in 2017, the pair decided to expand their business rather than get traditional office jobs.
Their business costs included roughly $900 for a motor and a shaft that powers their work as well as $2,000 for their various shearing handpieces. Each year they buy around 60 new combs, which cost roughly $15 each. McRose also paid to take an advanced sheep shearing course.
“We knew that we like shearing and that it allowed us to travel, and we made decent money at it. So we decided to give that a go full-time and it worked really well,” says McRose. “The first year we did 350 jobs, the year after that we did 475, then 575, and this year, we’re gonna knock that out of the park again. It’s really been an exponential run now that we are doing it full-time because there’s not a lot of people that do what we do. And there’s even fewer that do it well.”

These are my sheep shearers. She's right. I don't give two figs about their private life. I just want my sheep sheared and sheared well, so I can spin the wool. They're the only ones who are willing to do small flocks. Many won't. They do a great job, and small flock/herd owners would be doing their own animals without these two. They're awesome.

Katie I was already a subscriber to your channel, and routinely watch your videos. I’ve always admired the efficiency and the care that you show towards the animals in the shearing process. You also try to do each animal quickly, but with as few nicks and cuts to them, as possible. Glad to see that you and Darian are doing well with your business.

A two-week vacation in 1981. Then an air traffic controller's strike left me stranded. I fell in love with the British people and the countryside. Been here ever since.
I am DELIGHTED to find that Right Choice Shearing is a flourishing business. I would have been distraught to hear that they weren't doing well. I really enjoy hearing Katie educate about her profession and I love the positive, friendly, warm energy she puts into the world. 😊

Those hours are pretty insane though. Once adjusted out it’s not as high as it seems especially considering the longer term body impact.
It is really hard to find good, reliable shearers. Most in our area are older and retiring from the circuit. I’ve had the worst time finding someone to come out since we were gifted sheep 3years ago. These two are very professional and They do an amazing job. We only have 3 sheep and they still treat them as an important job. They don’t cut corners (no pun intended) just because they are not show/high quality wool sheep. Our “wooly lawn mowers” are happy, healthy and stay cool all summer thanks to these ladies. Can’t wait to have them back out this spring!
Ive been watching Katie and Darian on their KZread channel, and i must say Katie is fantastic at sheering sheep, she makes it look so easy, but years of practice and experience has got her where she is today. Also farmers impressed with their work will pass their information to other farmers , word of mouth. i bet farmers are crying out for fantastic sheerer. Katie's gender, sexuality should have nothing to do with anyone when looking for a mobile sheerer, and thankfully it hasn't stopped her and Darian running a fantastic, reliable business, hope you smash the $100,000-$120,000 this financial year.

Buy long-term care insurance!! Make sure to get one where the coverage (dollar amount they will pay per day) increases with inflation.

That hard earned money you say to save will be worth pennies on the dollar by the time they are able to retire. That's why my 401K is soil, you could say well until the government decides to confiscate it but if that happens then we have bigger issues at hand. They only work half the year. I guarantee they are making plans for their future.

Her prices seem pretty low to me as someone who's never done this but works in finance. Do you think she could have charged double the rate mentioned in the video or is the industry pretty competitive? I'm assuming most people don't shop around and tend to stick with their sheerer, kind of like most people stick with their barbers or nail tech for years.

@@h1inc816 from a VERY cursory search online with no set service area, yes. Yes that is a pretty low price. I only looked at 2 (cursory, like I said), but the set-up costs alone were 2-3 times the amount the McRose's offer. That's not including any other charges. (One was charging extra for what I would consider "part of it" aka the pizzle.)

@@ChrissEsparza not all construction sites are that hard working. If you look at the laborers, yes, but besides climbing and getting into places, a lot of the trades don't have to lift material that heavy over and over.

I have been binge watching the shearing loving the music, narration, video quality. I enjoy the commentary on the types of wool and personality of the animals. These women are rock stars, so creative and inspiring. Plus I enjoy homesteading, products from natural resources made at home. Such a joy! Keep making videos!

@Jasmine Contreras My guess is that shearing the smaller frame of a goat would be more fiddly and take longer. So maybe not as profitable a customer! Katie probably has to concentrate that much harder not to cut skin, tendon, muscle or bone with her fast buzzing shears. Also, I don't think the pelt of a goat is as dense and fuzzy as that of a sheep or alpaca. So again, not getting that satisfying "peel back" effect with the goats. These are just guesses.

That's only $6,666.66/month, minus expenses, taxes, maintenance on the property, feeding, vet costs for the sheep, etc? Sounds good on paper, but w the long, 24.7.365 hard work, property taxes, income tax... Not so sure the numbers crunch so well. It's sad.

I watch Katie everyday (Darian too; however, she’s usually not behind the camera as much) and I am so very impressed by her skills and by the way she treats the animals in her care. They are living their dream and I am so happy for them. My daughter is currently attending to A&M and I am a nurse in Kansas. I miss her so and if I was given any sort of chance to work for Katie and Darian I would in a second and move back to Texas! Love you guys! Keep it up! I love how you are with these animals. Even though they might give you a hard time you are still so gentle and caring. If I had sheep,llamas or alpacas I would definitely hire you and your wife to shear them! I really enjoy your short videos. Your talent just amazes me! Your logic is inverted: it’s *always* been the conventional wisdom that office jobs were better paying and, for as long as there have been office jobs, easier and “more respectable.” That was because we were - for so long - a mostly agrarian population that wanted to “better” itself. Being in the city where information and change were happening, rather than removed from them on the farm, seemed like the answer. But when *everyone* is in office jobs, and blue collar jobs go wanting, the pay scale flips. There’s also the snob effect: “working w/one’s hands is for peasants”, whereas it is actually an art, if done right (as anyone who has plumbing or has hired a carpenter or electrician knows) and is very rewarding. And should be regarded as such.
These two gals are not just shearing sheep, they’re educating us all in what it takes to both run a business and educate the public. Their videos are so entertaining, I’m amazed that they can shear sheep all day and still find time to expertly edit the videos. Maybe they do that during the non-shear months of the year!
Can't get enough of Katie and Darian videos! It's interesting and wonderful to watch them work. I think part of their success is the way they relate to their clients (the ones getting the shearing). They make sure that the animals aren't traumatized so that they don't get freaked out on future appointments. I've seen other people shear animals but it's something about these two women that are different and special when they shear. I hope they become financially secure in their business and continue making those videos!!!🐏🐑🦙🐐

@AZPeach They explained that shearing these fleece growing animals is definitely seasonal work in Texas. And that most get shorn twice each year. For the animals' health and comfort, they get those heavy fleeces off by the end of July, so they're cooler over Summer. And they begin their bookings in March. The animals keep their fleeces over the Winter months for warmth. So their shearing work was described as intense - 7 days a week, moving around the state, for about five months total. Bookings from farms would quieten off between August - Feb.
I loved the KZread video where she had difficulty wrestling a sheep down so she had her wife do it! It was so funny! They’re an awesome duo! Congratulations to you both you rock!

Well USA is a crazy place to live in where you might expect some tech geek struggling to make some decent yearly income but someone with jobs as 'shearing sheep', 'pool cleaning' etc to make nearly 6 digit income.. crazy!

See if you can find some episodes of “Dirty Jobs”, a fantastic show from some years back, possibly on KZread. The host, Mike Rowe, is s champion of blue collar jobs, largely because one can work fir her or himself and make a VERY nice living.

@@jesuslover5968 there have been a lot of women featured on dirty jobs. Mechanics, demolition crews, farm hands, factory worker, firework producers, zoo workers, tons of women.

I've taken care of sheep just when a friend would go out of town. They were Suffolk as you well know are a VERY large breed. When I see you take down sheep and alpacas you make it look so easy. I think you both are very brave to handle them as farm animals can be so unpredictable. Then add they spit...lololol. Thanks for showing that women can handle such a male dominated field. You both rock!
I love her, I hope she expands and hires more shearers to gain income without all the labor. If I had sheep I’d hire her!!

You make something I knew nothing about fascinating and it's incredibly satisfying to see an animal bogged down in their own fleece be freed from it for the season by your skill. Wow… it was great to hear how how Katie and Darian got their start. I’m of the same opinion as everyone else who commented here - don’t give a flip about their personal life… except to see how happy they are together! I almost wish I had a small heard so I could hire them to do my shearing!

Amazing skill!! It takes me over an hour to shear a sheep because I rarely do it, and it isn't neat like that. Wish they lived closer.

I love watching her YT videos she truly makes it look easy, let me tell sheering sheep and other fiber animals is no easy task, It's unbelievably easy to accidentally cut the animal or your self. my cousins and I wear all 4H kids My uncle was very caring he would take on the task of sheering all the market lambs, to ensure the safety of both us and our beloved lambs ❤️
I the early 1980’s we had sheep between 10 to maybe 20+ and part of the shearing fee was letting them have the fleece. I’m really interested and touched by their love story.

These two ladies take care of our goats and llamas. They do it more as a favor to us, because I can’t believe its worth their time to make a stop at our small place. They are super amazing with the stress free way they handle our animals. I think they are great and I’m proud to know them.

This is really interesting. I wondered how you got started, and I never knew that sheep shearing could be so dangerous! I can tell that the two of you put the animals' well-being ahead of anything else. You're always so gentle with them, and they generally cooperate and aren't afraid of you.

Congratulations. So many people are complaining they can't find jobs that pay enough. But the two of you went out and made your own company to do what you want and enjoy, with the lifestyle you want and make enough to support it. I wish more people would think creatively to do what you have done. I enjoy watching your videos, I can't tell you why, but it sort of soothing and interesting!

@@zachg6456 you can't scale up your job your wage is capped theres isn't. and they are building there dream not someone else's. Also, you control your time which is the ultimate goal for everyone.

No they can’t scale up unless they use cheap labor off illegal immigrants and pay them peanuts which is most farms anyways

In my county, in Britian, there is so little demand for fleeces that one farmer has recently been giving them away to people.
