    Wow, that interaction escalated quickly. I think both need to learn not just gym etiquette but how to talk to people so as not to aggravate. The best way to get what you want and not make yourself look evil is by being kind and humble. It's amazing what manners will get you even in this crazy world.

    To be fair all she did was say that she was going to use the plates in her next set, which is fair enough, especially in a gym with relatively few plates. His reaction is totally out of order. He would have never said anything like that to a guy, especially if bigger than him.

  • @angrygoldfish

    @angrygoldfish

    6 ай бұрын

    @@MajingoPower Yeah, she didn't react that badly at first. But neither was it in a way to de-escalate or cushion his obnoxiousness with kindness or selflessness. Her response to his horrid words was "men". She then posted that video on the Internet. Her attitude was, 'it's my weight'. Even if she said it in a relatively reasonable way, her attitude and demeanour is not that of kindness, selflessness, or de-escalation. For sure he was completely out of line. But a truly humble act would be, if he took the plates without asking, to say, "sorry, man, have you checked if there are other plates for you to use? I'm just warming up and will be using them in a sec. I don't wanna ruin your workout though, so maybe we can share?" She could have still thought the guy was rude for taking the plates, but her attitude would be that of kindness in order to make that person realise what kind of inconsiderate act it was to take her plates. Kindness makes people feel culpable. They realise how bad they were because you showed them a mirror by being the complete opposite of them. Maybe you think differently to me, and that's fine. I don't wanna say you're wrong. But the attitude of 'he wouldn't have said that if it was a guy bigger than him' is that of escalation. You'd be using your size to bully someone into backing down, not kind words. I'd rather use kind, selfless, humble words, not a weapon or my size. But that's just me.

    That’s fair, but usually when I ask for plates, I assume they’re going to use it at any point in their exercise because I know I go up in weights as I warm up. So if there’s just enough plates on the rack to go up to my working set, then I’d rather keep it there. Some people warm up for like 30mins which in that case, you probaly should give up some plates, but I only take about 1-2 mins to just go up plate by plate. If there were more plates than I needed? Please, be my guest, you can take all of the non needed plates. Both were acting childish though.

    Depends. If they're doing elevated squats and that's all that's available, you can be patient and wait or offer to bring him replacement plates. I do standing calf raises on the Smith machine and use two 35s to stand on to create better ROM. Unless someone is building a plate fort, you need to just wait and be patient. Whether you believe the bumper plate should be used for elevated squats or not is irrelevant, it may have been his only option when he started.
