The Hilton Sisters being abandoned in Charlotte NC ended up being one of the best things that ever happened to them. They were taken in by the Charlotte community and cared for and truly loved for the first time in their lives. A church immediately took them in and found them housing. They had their very own house for the first time in their lives. The local grocery store hired them and they worked behind the counter much of the time, where they felt comfortable and not on display. They were beloved and respected in Charlotte. At the end of their lives, it was the community that checked in on them and discovered that they had passed. They had caught a very nasty flu and had called out of work sick. When they didn't answer calls, their grocery store family came to their home and discovered what had occurred. Because they did not have much money, the Thompson family donated a burial plot where their son, Troy was buried. They had a nice funeral. Many people cared for them and attended. Despite having such tragic, terrible circumstances surrounding them most of their lives, they found acceptance and love in the end. They were loved. My parents were born and raised in Charlotte and remember seeing the sisters working at the grocery store many times. They were a part of our community. According to the older folks around here, Charlotte was where they finally felt at home and not like freaks. They were happy here.

And I'll bet that the grocery store wasn't as glamourous as the stage or movies...I would bet money that they felt sooo good about themselves and so proud to have that job where they were standing on their own feet and supporting themselves..and at a time when most women still had to rely on husbands or family..I know I'm proud of their really courageous example!💪❤️

If they had made an attempt to separate them after the one had died, there is a good chance that the remaining twin would have survived. The remaining twin likely died due to the products of decomposition entering her circulatory system and causing sepsis, rather than from the 'flu that originally infected them both.

That was Exactly my diagnosis also and it Had to be, Sepsis IS the Most likely cause of her death for the exact reason you stated. I wonder if they had a phone and get a feeling that there wasn't one available in the house or the sister who was still alive would have called somebody for help unless she was overcome with emotion thinking that there was No option for saving her but she Definitely could and would have been saved had she been able to notify someone of the situation and might not have been able to move with the 'dead weight' of her sister attached to her. But I get a strange feeling that she may have Wanted to join her sister because she may have Not wanted to live with her sister gone, she probably wouldn't have had known How to.

@@constitution_8939 Yeah, I am sure that she would have lived as there were no complicated structures involved in their join. Sepsis can be pretty difficult to diagnose, but in this case it would be a pretty obvious conclusion.

@@constitution_8939 The question is, at the age of 61, could the living twin have been able to move her sister to REACH the phone if they had one. Not everyone had more than one phone and the single home phone was usually in the living room or entry way--far from the bedroom they were most likely in.

I found some info on Troy M Thompson : they share a grave marker with a man named Troy M. Thompson, a young man who died in Vietnam. Apparently his father was an acquaintance of the Hilton Sisters in Charlotte and added their names to his son's headstone at the time of their deaths (1969).

I lived in Charlotte in the early 60s, I was around 5,or 6, and we shopped where they worked, they worked in the produce department weighing the produce, they had 2 scales one for each of them. I was in aura of them, they fascinated me being so young and never seeing anyone like them. I would stand by them and they would let me put things on the scales to be weighed. They were always smiling and didn't mind a child's curiosity, or constant chattering. I never knew their incredible story until I got older. I can see them still in my mind eye, they wore bright red checked shirts, blue skirts and had the brightest red hair I had ever seen. RIP 🙏

That would have been ideal, but highly doubtful. Violet most likely could have been saved, had they been found in time. Violet most likely died from infection with a weak immune system from the flu. With the death of Daisy, and the flu, her body couldn't fight the germs and with the death of Daisy, around day two, decomposition was setting in and spread to Violet.

The twins were buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Charlotte, but with just $1,000 to their name, there wasn't enough money to buy their own cemetery plot, so they had to share one with the son of an acquaintance, a Vietnam soldier named Troy Thompson. According to the Charlotte Observer, the twins had a quiet funeral with friends and co-workers. And that was the end of the sad, strange (but kind of okay, in the end), lives of Daisy and Violet Hilton.

I survived two bouts of necrotising fasciitis, where my body's immune system went overboard fighting off a minor skin infection and started killing off the healthy tissue around it (necrotising means dying/dead). The larger wound was just over 10% of my skin surface. What I remember of it is that it was painful but not unbearably so. Mostly I was extremely exhausted, unlike anything I've ever felt before. So exhausted that I literally could not move my hands or any other part of my body. If I had been alone, I would simply have drifted into unconsciousness fairly rapidly and never regained it. The Hong Kong flu that year was terrible. It was a novel flu, so even young, healthy people were badly affected and many died.

You're judging the story from the comfort of your modern civilization. Your using modern morals to judge the past it's not really fair. Freak shows actually were the best option for people with deformitys back then. You have to understand there's no social security there's no welfare there's no disability checks. If you could not work someone either took care of you or you starved to death begging for money in the streets. Joining the circus or a freak show allowed you the independence of making your own money and some of the freaks around the turn of the century actually made pretty good money making more than they would have if they were born normal and working in one of the textile factories or something. For example Chang and yang Siamese twins from Burma died millionaires. If they never join the circus and become a freak show they would have to resort to living on the streets begging for money. I know it's hard to comprehend and it's not your fault you didn't live in the late 1800s early 1900s their way of living was just as alien to you as your way of living would be to them. The issue comes when we start taking our modern morals and trying to place them on people in the past. Just know that 100 years from now someone will be taking their morals and placing them on you and you will be the monster who doesn't measure up to their standards.

If both ladies had the flu, their bodies could have been weakened. Even if they only shared some small blood vessels, after one died, the other sister could have become septic due to sharing even small blood vessels. Having a decomposing body attached to you (even if only by some small blood vessels) it would cause high rates of bacteria to enter the living sister's system. She most likely already had the flu and from the flu a compromised system. Because her system/body was already weekend by the flu, any additional bacteria would have killed her. Even if the sister did not have the flu, bacteria from the deceased sister could have caused her system to become septic and kill her. It's hard to tell the exact cause of death without performing the autopsy myself or looking through the records from the coroner. Both sister may have had other health complications that contributed to their death. I pray the sisters are back home, in peace and with GOD.

The sisters were produce clerks at the Park and Shop which is still standing and the 2 bedroom house they died in was owned by their church and has apparently been torn down and replaced by generic brick duplexes.
