As a funeral director in Colorado, who has worked in the profession in NJ and Texas, $1300 is usually the price of a DIRECT cremation, where there are no services at all. The decedent in this case was casketed (we don't know if the family purchased a cremation casket or used a rental for the viewing). With fees, staff, church I know the bill would be more than $1300, closer to $3,000 perhaps. It sounds like a "Bait & Switch"- they quote a direct cremation price and then raise it later. However, in most states you can't hold a body hostage for payment. If the funeral director signed a contract to perform a cremation after a church service, he is bound to do so. If he hasn't been paid he can seek a legal remedy in small claims court or civil court such as a financial judgment. To hold a body in lieu of payment is desecration, and as in the story, you can be fined, suspended or lose your license.

Good information to know. Knowledge can ever be overlooked. Sounds like the deceased’s family has a some serious business to pursue, like with the SC state atty general and the Department of Commerce who issues business licensing. Contact local media, then place a lien on the building and whatever these phonies own. The lid needs to come off this despicable trash can.

When my dad passed away the funeral home said it was $1,400 for the cremation which is all we wanted. It was during the COVID close down and we couldn't have a viewing anyways. We declined the remembrance gifts, flowers, etc for the same reason. My brother paid with his credit card and, without our knowledge the funeral home added one of their urns which was way over priced, $250 in flowers, the remembrance cards and a lot of other things. In the end they charged almost $4,000 to his card and we had no other choice but to pay. I wonder if this is why the funeral home in this case is claiming that the family gave only a deposit even though they had covered the full cost, which is the amount they were given. I don't mean to be disrespectful but funeral homes give a price and once they secure the body they start adding services which the family have no option but to come up with the money somehow.

Sorry to hear that. That is horrible. If a business overcharges you and refuses to fix it, tell your credit card company so they can remove the charges. That is one of the benefits of using a credit card. Some businesses count on people not wanting to pursue the issue any further and just counting it as a loss.

Exactly with $1300 deposit or payment they should have still cremated her remains! If they wanted to hold the cremated remains until final payment is made, I guess that is something they could do. However I would think the most ethical way to deal with this is return the remains to the family and bill for the balance due. If they didn’t pay after a time they could have sent them to collections. You don’t hold or repo bodies like you would a car that is not paid off sooo sick!

Now this guy who died from stomach cancer in my opinion it was karma for what they did to that poor woman and her family. But I never knew what came of it it was just reported that they were under investigation and then all of a sudden it closed. I wish I could tell you more about it but, I can't. I do have family in greenwood where this whole story originated I would have to ask them. It's sad what happened to her, and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. But unfortunately funeral homes can be a little shady Grady if you don't know the owner, or if the family has a huge history of being in business there such as second or third generation. I just moved here 11 years ago so I'm still learning the area. I'm going to be talking to people now because you never know when you're going to need a good funeral Home. @@jasonshiers5771 I actually was told by a retired LEO that (before I was born) a funeral director got busted for returning to graves at night and stealing the coffins so he could resell them. I need to ask him about it again and see if I can get some details.

This is why I keep receipts. The spouse needed to sue the parties involved - who knows if they have malpractice insurance, but I would get everything I could. Also, call on these places and have them investigated. You can go above the sheriff department if needed, but document document document everything. My heart goes out to not only the spouse, but the family, and probably church family. You know that community suffered. 😥 There has got to be a special place in hell for wicked people, especially wicked people who act under the title of pastor/minister in Gods name. God sees all and He doesn't like ugly. I'm sorry, I would have been arrested for making a scene if it was my family. But then again, the police would be involved and I would have them check everything - Prayers for peace for this family. I'm so very sorry this happened to you. I hope and pray you have found some form of peace from this disaster the funeral home brought to your grieving family.

Very sad situation. Every state has different laws regarding how funeral home operate. I'm from NYC where by law family members must be given an itemized list of services provided and the cost including taxes and other surcharges. If problems arise call either Department of Consumer Affairs or your States Attorney General. Never roll over and play dead; you must fight and stay on it because unfortunately there are too many unscrupulous people who will take advantage of grieving families.

When my former stepmother-in-law's mother died, the first thing the funeral home wanted to know was what the limit on her husband's credit card. The final bill was within a quarter of his limit. It included $5,000 for the parking lot rental. At the funeral home. Their parking lot. There were a ton of charges like that. After their daughter got a hold of the bill, the charges were reduced by more than half. That's why I keep telling my kids to just get a refrigerator box or something, and throw my ass in it. I will haunt them if they even try to bury me in a $6,000 casket.

For her to be shoved in a closet is horrific no matter payment. The funeral home could have gotten paid (if they claim they didn't) the legal way. For example, like normal collection agencies!
