Super helpful. Thank you almost bought one of those Home Depot twisting pencil sharpeners but when I saw it was close to $4, I said there’s got to be a better way.

New drinking game, take a drink whenever *graphite* appears after he says lead. Bonus game, take a shot when he throws things.

Kinda late to the party but I'm glad I found this video. I bought some carpenters pencils at Big Orange. I also bought the sharpener because they sell it alongside the pencils so it must work right? I never could get a good point using that thing. Now I know how to properly sharpen those pencils!

That’s ok. It takes a bit of practice with a knife to get it just right where you don’t have a broken tip when you pull it out to use it.

I just got a pencil and blade but I can't seem to cut as smooth as you do. Are some pencils harder to sharpen than others and what blades do you recommend using?

We keep packs of 100 Stanley’s or craftsmen blades on hand and some carpenter pencils are a little different than others but we don’t use anything specific. I think like anything it takes some practice. when I am sharpening I’m holding the knife steady in my right hand and with my left thumb behind the blade slightly pushing. Most of the movement is with my left fingers pulling the pencil while the knife is held stationary.

Newb question, when cutting, do you cut NEXT to the pencil mark where it is still visible OR do you cut off the pencil mark making it no longer visible?

The answer can be either. There are times when you may need your material to slightly wedge into place and there are times when you will need some clearance. This could also depend on wether or not you are working by yourself or not. Some guys will measure a little heavy or light. If your partnering up for a while you begin to learn which way your help measures and if your the cut man you make the adjustment on your end. I had a nephew work with me for a while as a cut man and he could split the line on a cut. I like to see the line a bit after a cut if possible so if you screwed up a measurement you know where the problem lies, you or the cut man. On another note If I have a cut man I will always write the number down somewhere that I call out because they will always blame you if the piece comes back wrong or ask “what was that measurement again”. I hope that’s helpful DC

Ummm, From my experience with Union anything, I'd rather not learn the most inefficient method possible. My all time favorite to sharpen carpenter pencil was the Swanson AlwaySharp push point carpenters pencils, unfortunately now they seem to have disappeared.

Is this a joke? Looks like one of those late night commercials selling crap. One swipe with your pencil then 3 or 4 with the other one making it wider😂😂😂😂 a good carpenter takes the size of the lead and mark when cutting. I’ve worked with lots of fine carpenters and I’ve never heard anyone talk about this

It’s about teaching the apprentice detail. If the pencil is butchered so is the work.Paying attention to detail is important. A seasoned veteran carpenter partner knows what your asking for and knows which side of the line to cut. If they show interest in something as small as this they may be trainable.

2:57 leave it to a union guy to not know basic measurements. 0.05mm would be a really fricken thin line, unless you meant inches, which would be 1.5x the width of a 0.5mm pencil.

He's a yank; it's something called inches. 0.05" is 5/100th of an inch about 0.5mm.

these comments are full of office people . on the first line, you only did one pass. on the second line, you did a lot of passes and even moved the square. you can fool these rookies but you can’t with a veteran 🤭

I think he was trying to demonstrate what a thick line looks like when made by a badly sharpened pencil. Cause that's what mine looked like till my dad cracked down on me for my apparent "lack of attention to detail".
