Love watching Hollywood fencing duels where neither participant knows the first thing about fencing.

I always understood that saber fencing was the most common in those days, on the grounds that it had the most practical application. Gentlemen that played with sabers would have a minimal understanding of a weapon they'd use if they became officers. Old man's got a point, all the same. Wickham (Lazy writers!) didn't prove anything, except that he embarrasses War Heroes, and had better things to do with his time and talent than serve King and Country.

The writers do show how little he proved later in the episode though. When sharpe beats him in a real fight

Sabers are a military weapon, these people are using smallswords, completely different weapons, one is a civilian self defense weapon and a sign of high status, the other is a purely practical battlefield weapon. In reality, if you read any accounts of duels from the time that in a duel whoever has better training usually wins, there are a lot of accounts of British soldiers and officers, particularly cavalrymen getting beaten in duels with French officers trained in the use of the smallsword, if it's stab against slash 9 times out of 10 the stab will land first, and 9 times out of 10 a nobleman who's trained most of their life will beat a soldier that has had no proper training in swordsmanship.

try that fancy "I've gotten your sword with me arm" move with a saber and you'll lose the arm.

Is it just me, or did anyone else want to see sharpe turn up with his sword, and see the other guys face go 'holy fuck!'?

Sharpe was never much of a swordsman, he usually gets beat but wins due to scrappy tactics you couldn't really get away with in a fancy dandy duel

Rio A.: The assembled would have been aghast if he actually utilized combat sword tactics. Though, I agree. But there is nothing pretty about them, or a man getting kicked in the stones or punched in the kidney while sword fighting.

@@WickedKingLycoan Combat veterans often struggle when coming home with their words. War is sheer brutality and requires brutishness for a soldier to survive. Us civvies would indeed not be able to handle watching it.

Fencing is about combat. But only in the sense of the duel. And why do I suspect the young Wickham will get his ass handed to him by part II

there's a difference between friendly fencing in a clean environment with blunt swords and fighting with swords on a battlefield.

Sharpe would have won were it a matter of life and death but since fencing is for the fop who hids in high society and does not go to war and the foil is much lighter than sharpe's saber
