Shaping a Retro Fish Surfboard

Спорт

This short film is a glimpse into the work of shaping and crafting a surfboard by hand. It requires incredible skill, knowledge, tools, patience, and passion. Sam has been a student of the art for quite some time and takes each step seriously and is meticulous in his approach, as each mistake can mess up the surfboard.
This particular surfboard shape is making its revival in the global surf scene due to its versatility in small to medium sized waves. Sam opens up about the intricacies of shaping a Retro Twin Fish Surfboard and why it is arguably one of the most fun surfboard shapes ever made.

As a born and raised Lis fish surfer. Sunset Cliffs/Ocean Beach local. Watching so many boards shaped and shaped myself, we never cross plane. Glad to see you are keeping the idea alive and relevant. 🌊🤙

Hi there, thanks so much, this technique Matt Kazuma taught me in Maui. Its a proven trusted method and is super accurate.

Great job. I clicked on this because I saw him using a skill saw on the outline. Smart. I use them cutting curves on wood gates, and when shaping a board I’ve used one to cut rocker when my planer was malfunctioning. Can be used to cut specific width concaves too.

I pretty much like all the innovations and improvements that comes with research of new materials. What are your basics concerns and opinion about eps or pu while considering a shape ? I just had a eps fish ordered here in Rio,Brazil

Hi Daniel, thanks for your comment. You can send the shaper a message via www.bobs-boards.com/ as this is not his channel. As for me personally, I hope the material used for boards, wetsuits, etc. will become more sustainable in the future so it is more in line with the surf culture. Enjoy your new fish!!!

Hi there, the shaper here, so i personally only shape with pu although i have shaped both. I mainly choose pu over eps for its amazing finish and density especially for classic shapes like a fish a bit of extra weight can be advantageous. EPS has its place for high performance lightweight boards. Also the selection of pu blanks over here is much better. Hope this helps a bit
