The prologue literally has Szeth's narration asking "Where is Shalash's statue?" It's not even subtext; it's just text

The scene with her and Taln is so amazing and heartbreaking!

I think the reason for Nale and Kalak being at Gavilar’s feast is because they were tracking down Ash. In the very first Szeth perspective from the feast, he walks by a line of statues depicting the Heralds and notices that Shalash’s is missing, which probably explains why Nale and Kalak were at the feast and talking about Ash. Idk of this is the real reason but it is just something I’ve been thinking about

I think that’s definitely part of it though I have a sneaking suspicion something might be happening on a grander scale with the Heralds at Gavilar’s feast... They’re just too suspicious!

Shalash is the famously beautiful Herald of the Lightweavers, with the surges of Transformation and Illumination. Shao-Ala-Ashe is Aonic for Transformation-Beauty-Illumination. She's also the namesake for Shallan. Shao-Ala-Aan is Aonic for Transformation-Beauty-Truth.

There's a lot of hints that Shalash might bond a spren of another order. We have 10 books, one for the flashbacks of a character of each order (as confirmed in WoBs). Since we already have Shallan as a Lightweaver and Ash is pretty much confirmed to be the flashback character of one of the books in the later half, I think it'll be really really exciting to see how a Herald would join a different order

And it'll probably be a Dustbringer spren. Every other order is accounted for in the remaining flashback characters (if you're counting Taln for Stonewards), and like you said the Lightweavers have already been covered with Shallan. Plus, I think Ash's personality aligns pretty well with what we know of the Dustbringers' philosophy and Ideals.

Shalash also destroyed or removed her statue from Gavilar's palace. In the prologue of WoK, we see a mention of this "Szeth brushed by, continuing past a line of statues depicting the Ten Heralds from ancient Vorin theology. Jezerezeh, Ishi, Kelek, Talenelat. He counted off each one, and realized there were only nine here. One was conspicuously missing. Why had Shalash’s statue been removed? King Gavilar was said to be very devout in his Vorin worship."

I completely forgot about Baxils interlude it makes so much more sense now!

I have some older friends that read these books and have trouble following along with so many details. I really appreciate these videos because they help me explain this stuff, and keep them interested in one of the best stories ever written

The way you talk about the story is poetry. I want to read these books after watching this.

I wish I payed more attention to the interludes and just the books in general. I didn’t realize a lot of stuff you mentioned. I read edgedancer but I didn’t catch that and I don’t I even caught the stuff with mraize maybe I’m just forgetting.

please do more Herald videos, you've only got 3 covering individual heralds, and they're only up to the end of book 3

I like the theory that the heralds are going mad opposite to what they are famous or worshipped for. Ash is the herald of art and beauty and she is destroying all artistic depictions of herself because she can't stand the thought of anyone worshipping her. Jezrien was king of heralds and he became a drunk beggar.

I was also thinking about their insanity. I was thinking throughout the books that the combination of guilt for what they’ve done to Taln in abandoning the oath plus just the cumulative effect on their minds over 1000’s of years had to be the main reason. Then when Jezrian is killed and they “feel” something I had another thought. What if they “felt” in even the slightest way the torture Taln was enduring for the past 4000 years? They describe how awful it was in the prelude to SA in WoK. Not a full blown feeling of the pain, but a very subtle, subconscious drip, drip, drip of Taln’s horrific experience - almost like Chinese water torture that eventually eroded all their minds.

@@carlotruppi3314 I think of it more like since they are Cognitive shadows, that nature makes them feel the collective Cognitive pull of humanity on them. So all of Roshar thinks of Ash as the perfect embodiment of art and beauty so it is pulling her to be what they think of her as but she has actually betrayed that and doesn't want to be that. And that disconnect is what is driving her mad, along with the cumulative effect of 1000s of years and weight of her guilt. The biggest effect on their specific kind of madness goes with them denying what all of Roshar thinks of them as though

Hey. Love your Herald videos! One question: when you say they were “leaders” of their orders, were they at one point actually leading/training the OG Radiants? I know presently Nale is the only one associated with knights radiant but did the others are some point, that we know of? I get confused about how to OG Radiants took up the banner so maybe this will help. Thanks so much!

Thank you! Yeah, it’s mentioned in one of the epigraphs in Words of Radiance that Ishar made the decision for each Herald to guide their group of Knights Radiant. That’s about the most detail we get, it says he just knew the gravity of men/women getting access to surges. It also says that Nale was actually the last to step up to this role, having resisted the Skybreakers initially. Hope that helps a bit!

A few days ago me and my friend were reading books and she was reading rhythm of war and she turned a page and saw Jasnahs symbol and she's like ''I just realized how demonic this looks'' and I was like, "what"? and then she's just like "it looks demonic" and I'm like, "what"? and then she's like "yeah it looks like a picture from the farmyard of hell" so I was just confused, does anyone else see it?
