    Another great video! However, whether 'Honor' and 'Cultivation' are really 'Gods' is a matter of interpretation. As far as we understand right now, they were probably mortals that took up a shard of Adonalsium. Whether that makes you a 'god' or an incredibly powerful person is a matter of debate. I believe Jasnah would say it is the latter :)

    Hoid basically tells her of the existence of the shard Honor at the end of WoR, and they agree that Tanavast was a lovely fellow, but was not god.

    Keep in mind that Brandon Sanderson is Mormon. Their idea of "God" is very different from the standard Christian interpretation. Namely they believe in apotheosis, that mankind is meant to become gods ourselves. Not just like gods, but actual gods. I'll say that's pretty similar to taking up a shard.

    @@jakebishop7822 When they talk about her religion in RoW, Wit says that he personally believes that a God exists, but that he has no proof. He and Jasnah both agree that the Shardholders are real, but are not the omniscient "God" that the Vorin religion worships.

    Jasnah has explained that she disagrees with the idea that Honor and Cultivation are gods but merely beings of great power which given what we know there is no gods as even Adonalsium was broken at mortal hands in the cosmere.

    I haven't read Gentleman Bastards, but I'm planning to after I've finished House of Chains. My recommendation would be to start with Mistborn The Final Empire because it's fun and an easy read. it's also a good introduction to Sanderson's universe. After the the first 3 Mistborn books, I recommend starting with Way of Kings, which easily sits in my top 5 best books of all time.

    I’ve heard good things about Malazan, haven’t read them yet. I bought the hardcover Final Empire so I’ll give that a go before Stormlight. Might go with Gentleman’s Bastard Lies of Locke Lamora first though I hear it’s fantastic. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Kyle Wilson I personally would advise gentlemen bastards. I have not read malazan (but have heard good things and plan to), so I have nothing to say there. Though you don’t necessarily HAVE to, I would recommend reading the Cosmere books in their general release order, mostly in reference to stormlight, in which there are “easter eggs” from the previous series present in it (though the only thing that has directly involved the plot comes from Warbreaker in Oathbringer). When you start the Cosmere, I recommend Elantris -> Warbreaker -> mistborn era 1 -> stormlight -> mistborn era 2.

    There’s a general outline that Sanderson has already released as his plans of the series, and it can be seen in a few places. Here’s one: coppermind.net/wiki/The_Stormlight_Archive. Now, this shouldn’t be necessarily set in stone, as Sanderson has said himself that when he started the series, his plan was that Eshonai/Venli would be the focus of book 3 and I believe Dalinar was supposed to be book 5 at that time, but he realized he would need to change that order after writing Way of Kings. But to answer your question, it looks like we won’t get Jasnah’s full backstory until book 10, and that makes sense as it should give us the most insight into Gavilar and why he was doing what he was doing to make the plot come full circle.

    Her treatment of Renarin? You mean (spoilers for Oathbringer) sparing his life, despite thinking he was evil and being influenced by Odium, sympathizing him, consoling him, and holding him as he sobbed? Yep, a sure sign she'll go bad. We know that she can be ruthless when she's protecting those that she cares about, but we're also starting to see a bit of her softer, more compassionate side, and I think that's the way her character development will keep going.

  • @gaslone79

    @@jenevievehall2910 Sparing his life? What right did she have to take it? Does anyone who thinks someone might be "evil" have a right and obligation to kill them? Her evidence for Renerin deserving death seemed to be his spren was off, if I remember correctly. He had not acted cruel towards anyone, that I remember. He was weird, he was not effective but he tried. I think the better way to handle that would be to ask him. Find out what's really going on. She only relented when he completely submitted to her. That just seems fucked up to me.

  • @jenevievehall2910

    @jenevievehall2910

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@gaslone79 First of all, as a Radiant, it is her right and obligation to protect the world by killing those connected to and controlled by Odium. That's kind of the entire point of the Radiants. Second, she didn't just "relent when he completely submitted to her". Here's the scene where it happened, so you can see for yourself. "Jasnah raised her Blade over Renarin's head. "Make it quick, make it painless. "Most threats to a dynasty come from within. "Renarin was corrupted. She'd known something was wrong from the moment she'd read that he had predicted the Everstorm. Now, Jasnah had to be strong. She had to do what was right, even when it was so, so hard. "She prepared to swing, but then Renarin turned and looked at her. Tears streaming down his face, he met her eyes and nodded. :Suddenly they were young again. He was a trembling child, weeping on her shoulder for a father who didn't seem to be able to feel love. Little Renarin, always so solemn. Always misunderstood, laughed at, and condemned by people who said similar things about Jasnah behind her back. "… Jasnah dismissed her sword." She "relents" when she sees that he's scared, that he's trusting, and that he's still him. She's shown before that she will kill without hesitation to protect herself and her family. As we see in the WoR prologue, she's taken on a role as the protector of her family and "dynasty", even if it means being the one making the difficult choices. But, for the first time in the series, she doesn't make the logical, choice, the choice her spren seems to advocate for, she makes the compassionate one. This is the first real character development moment she's gotten since WoK, where she apologized to Shallan after her "suicide attempt." Both of these show a trajectory towards becoming more trusting and more compassionate, not towards being a blood thirsty tyrant.

    I dont think you can lump her character in with George Rape Rape Martin and his pile of copy and paste characters. He has no respect for his female characters, they are always limited and patronized. Also where was this same kind of energy when Khaldan was killing folks, it's always this mess and core belief that when men kill its necessary but when a woman does it for the same cause it's too crazy or shes too much. Come on if your a fantasy reader your head can't be that far up your butt.
