Shadow Colors and Undershot Shading

Learning about shadow colors with Dana Howl! In addition to testing sweet color combos, we are looking into the "Undershot Shading" technique of squirting shadows from below. This has also been called nadiral shading or anti-zenithal shading. Learning about shadow colors is useful whether you have an airbrush or not!

I recommend trying badger Mintair paints ghost tint set. It’s often affordable and you get so much of each color. They dry a little glossy though so be sure to finish with a flat varnish.

Back in the day Privateer Press helped put this sort of thing on the map. Almost no other painting guides actually recommended painting on the shadows. PP worked from mid-tones out, while everyone else just recommended to build up consecutive highlights. Seeing that in one of their books way back really opened up my painting.

Back in 1985 Boris Vallejo wrote "Fantasy Illustration Techniques" and I have long remembered (sort of) this quote (page 44) "I like to use a reflection of what is around in the shadow areas of the skin. If the scene has vegetation, it's nice to use some green on the skin as well as some warm colours to offset the coolness of the green. If it is a snow scene, I like to use blues and purples on the skin to give the impression of cold." This feels like a more deliberate approach to what you are doing with your shading here. Adding colours to the shadows to reflect the surroundings, or using a single colour in the shadows (of all materials) to establish a unifying light source are very valid artistic methods to help create the illusion of reality in your art - be it on a miniature or a painting.

I'm always a big fan of coloured shadows, I suppose this is an easy way to accomplish that. An even older Sam Lenz video on the Tabletop Minions channel (I think it was from December 2017 or so - I remember he was painting a skeleton from Warhammer Underworlds) showed him wet blending different colours into the shadow areas. I've been using that method on almost everything I've painted since then, it had a huge imact on my personal style.

I've been experimenting a bit with this technique on my salamanders space marines and found that this works quite well. I start with a zenithal from a 45 degree angle, which only leaves the a few dark spots. Warp lightning for the undershot and striking scorpion green from above. A few highlights with poisonous cloud from army painter and the armor is done. The only downside is that it's hard to fix mistakes without starting over from the start. I really like these collaboration videos and hope that we will see more of them in the future.

i like to start with the shadow colour then paint in zenithal style, it is easier to miss spots or over shadow and the angle from the bottom is often awkward. It doesn’t work all the time but if i can i dont like that. Then i go back with the shadow colour lightly. Also thank you for all the hard work, i was looking for this for a longtime!

Double the talent in one vid! Off to watch Danas after this. Side note. Shadow tones look best if they are more vivid than the mid tones and highlights in my opinion. For example a cadmium orange midtone looks amazing with a with a redish brown tone mixed into it for the shadows and a paler teal mixed into the orange for the highlights. Though I do like using an opposite color from the color wheel from time to time if it is a special figure or if it shows a lot of skin or fur. I think skin shadows look amazing using blues, purples and greens. This is how I do it since I switched to mostly using oil based paints. I love the amount of pigments they contain.

I was painting some Cthulhu board game minis and played around with priming the mini white, then doing a dark spray from the top, which created a strange iridescent effect that was appropriately confusing on the eyes (but sadly got lost a little in the subsequent painting steps)... In my head I was calling *that* process "reverse zenithaling", but I'm not surprised that there's other hobbyists that have already coined the term, not even referring to the same thing. maybe "negative zenithal"...? anyway, I've been wanting to try the colorful shadows method for a while now, so this is great inspiration :)

I've planned doing exactly this technique on larger models. In my case an eldar knight, his base color is pale sand and I planned a purple and brown undershot shading. The effect should be that of a bone armour, just as the lore describes. Thanks for the video, I was pretty insecure concerning the undershot shading and if it'll be a successful technique.

As you're shading over a base coat how about doing both the shading, and the Zenathol? You could even slapchop that way, base, dark then drybrush light. It might make an interesting alternative to the black, grey, white if you find another combination or two. You could combine the two to make a much more stylised shading effect rather than being limited to an all over drybrush from the basic slapchop method.

Just a quick FYI for those who still have a good amount of the early speed paints. I've had little issues with reactivation when using them until I started using them through my airbrush. The fact your laying down such thin filter like layers of paint means it can reactivate more easily. That said I was using them on high traffic "zenithial" areas on battletech miniatures so was easily able to incorporate that into weathering. I still think using them especially in this manner through the airbrush is worth my time though. 👌
