SH74A Garlands Road Level Crossing, Woolston, Christchurch
Today we are at the SH74A Garlands Road Level Crossing in Woolston in Christchurch which now has the sad honor of being the last Level Crossing in the Canterbury region with Mechanical Bells. I actually tried to film this Level Crossing in 2017 but no trains ever turned up so I am pleased that I was able to film it this time round.

a Christchurch boy here. i live in Woolston but more the other end. i am more familiar with the Ensors road crossing but drive over this one from time to time. at my age, 65, i remember from my childhood the old coal powered steam engines which we could hear from my home in Hoon Hay and my paternal grandfather was a station master at Addington when it was a station albeit only a signal box which he manually operated those were the days
2nd one was scary sounding when the DFB crossed the road 😮

There’s still a few around in NZ but most have been retrofitted to LEDS

These level crossings are so rare in New Zealand, not just because of the mechanical bells, it's also the angle of the road to the tracks
this crossing will eventually be upgraded as I Myself Was told by KiwiRail also it will be fitted with pedestrian stopgates but i have a soft spot for Mechanical Bells but all is said and i look forward to seeing the new crossing 🙂
The Griswold bells are still here in 2024
Not sure when Kiwirail is going to upgrade the crossing and getting new equipment for Garlands Road.
