2 DAYS Across NEW ZEALAND by Train

Watch this video to experience TWO of the world’s most scenic trains in New Zealand: The TranzAlpine and Coastal Pacific on New Zealand's Stunning South Island! In this New Zealand Travel Guide, we’ll explore New Zealand’s South Island by rail!
The TranzAlpine and Coastal Pacific trains traverse some of the planet’s most unbelievable landscapes. From Greymouth on the rainforested West Coast, we’ll traverse the Southern Alps to Christchurch. From there, we’ll head north toward Wine Country, while hugging the Pacific Coast, watching waves crash and spotting seals, dolphins, and other sea mammals.
The TranzAlpine and Coastal Pacific trains offer some of the most incredible rail adventures possible.
We’ll check out everything onboard, too. Including the café car and its selections of tasty snacks and meals. We’ll fully investigate the open-air observation car on both the TranzAlpine and the Coastal Pacific.

Thank you so very much for traveling by rail around NewZealand.! The country has fascinated me for many years. The trains have sure changed since i was last on then in the 1950s! Now i am housebound, so this was a much appreciated and fun excursion! Ive never seen so many sheep. We had cows here in U.S. A. In wisconsin. Very few sheep.

My cousins wife is from Wisconsin and I was hoping to attend their wedding there in 2017 but due to the inconvenience of my wife giving birth we couldn’t go. I fell in love with New Zealand and its people when I was there in in 1987. Your comment reminded me of the time I was in Wellington. I had arrived by ferry from South Island, and the hotel I was staying at sent a car to pick me up . The young gentleman driver could not get over the fact that I had traveled all that way from Chicago, just to visit New Zealand. He told me: "I've never even been off of North Island!"

Boy OH Boy, you and Susan brought back some memories for my wife and I. Back in approximately 2012, we took one of our many trips to New Zealand. Believe it or not; I had lived in Australia for about 50 years and NEVER wanted to visit NZ. I eventually took my first trip to the North Island after my daughter & her husband and grandkids moved over there. That first trip as the start of some 12 trips were eventually made across the "DITCH". In 2012, the "Bride" and I (yes we had been married by this time for 40 years) decided to travel from Christchurch; down the east coast of the South Island across to Wanaka, then down to Queenstown; the Fijordland, and up the West Coast to Milford Sound, up to The Franz Josef Glacier and carried up to Greymouth where we turned Right and headed for Arthurs Pass then onto Geraldine on the west coast after which we went back to Hokatika and Greymouth via Arthur's Pass. We travelled on to Picton and Nelson then came down the East coast though Kiakoura. I immediately recognised the Town of Kiakoura, the railway line and the very roadway we drove down. WOW the memories came flooding back. We overnighted at Kiakoura and carried on down to Christchurch where our journey began. We spent a wonderful three weeks on the road, visiting other places like the Fox Glacier, Lake Pukaki, Mt Cook, Tiamaru, and many more places. Looks like we are going to have to get to NZ again. Many thanks for sharing our wonderful journey with us. Best Wishes mate!

Glad you enjoyed your holiday Angus. I live in Geraldine, which you mention in your narrative. It's great to see the number of tourists travelling through Geraldine rapidly increasing now that NZ is open again. Since retiring a couple of years ago we have travelled extensively around NZ and marvel at the spectacular sights you went to and that we barely knew existed even though we've lived here most of our life.

I did those two journeys in the opposite direction about 18 years ago. The transalpine had a carriage at the back with a u of windows and seats which was where I sat. And saw penguins on a beach near Kaikoura from the open carriage which was amazing on the other train! The open cars are truly fab! Two of the best train journeys I’ve done!

Jeb, New Zealand has the most fascinating natural scenery I have seen outside of the USA. The train ride you took from Greymouth to Christchurch is among the most scenic and iconic train rides anywhere around the world. I loved the South Island and Christchurch. However, I was there before the big earthquakes rocked that beautiful city where in the City Center was awesome colonial architecture. Would I go back to New Zealand? You bet, and I would do it immediately if I had the chance to go. The people of New Zealand were the friendliest I have ever met in all of my international travels. The one takeaway I have of New Zealand is it's a gem in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean where the seas can get crazy. Btw, the weather reminded me so much of the Pacific Northwest here in the USA.

  • @jodij2366

There is a funny story about why the coaches were built here. It was thought at the time that the ex-British Rail Mk II coaches couldn't make it through the #1 tunnel on the Midland Line (the one the Tranz Alpine goes on) and so the team at Hillside had to design their own carriages, albeit heavily influenced by the ex-British Rail Mk II dimensions. Seemed to have not been an issue as the ex-British Rail Mk II coaches are now used as baggage cars.

@@xr6lad Clearly triggered by a woman in control eh. Actually the rail system was mostly killed off previously by centre-right governments. If you had a half-open mind, you'll discover the current government over the last 5 years has invested nzd billions in upgrading tracks, signalling and rolling stock, mostly for decarbonising freight transport. As a platform for further investment. Kiwis travel by plane or car as NZ's geography is mountainous. NZ is not Japan or Europe having only 5 million people over the size of Italy, Uk, Japan, California etc. What's Australia or the US's excuse for poor rail infrastructure? I've travelled Amtrak from Montreal down to Miami, from New Orleans to LA and it was a pretty dire experience. Dirty carriages and piss poor food offerings. Sketchy rail stations especially late at night. And in Australia, what passes for intercity travel (the 50 year old XPT) is a sad joke between Sydney and Brisbane. Delays.delays and oh yes, yet more delays. Till they just gave up and the last part of the trip was by bus from Casino to Brisbane. Clapped out infrastructure in countries way richer than NZ. Just sayin'....

G'day Jeb & Suzanne, what a treat to see you guys back in the Southern Hemisphere and in one of the most beautiful countries in the Southern Hemisphere, NZ. I hope you guys enjoyed your trip in New Zealand. I hope the next journey, whilst you're in the Southern Hemisphere, is in Australia (I think you've been to Perth Jeb?) I think Australia has awesome train, plane and road adventures ( I may be a little biased, I am Australian.) Can I suggest a Queensland journey from Brisbane to Cairns or Sydney to Adelaide? Or Adelaide to Melbourne?

I LOVE New Zealand! I would love to go there someday but since that is unlikely in my lifetime, I want to thank you for taking me on this trip with you. By the way, you really should go see Hobbiton while you are there. It is the set from Lord of The Rings and they have built it into an actual town instead of the set props they used for the movie.

Great stuff. I’m guessing the lack of food on the TranzAlpine is because the train travels from Christchurch in the morning and will have been depleted by that. I had a similar experience on the Northern Explorer where they ran out of almost all food. You’re animated maps are cool - can I ask what software / plug-in you use to make them? 🤔

Great video. As a New Zealander you did a good job. My only question is, did you make it on to the ferry between Picton and Wellington? If not, this is something you must do when you come back next time. The views, especially up Queen Charlotte Sound are amazing!
