Embarking on a mesmerizing 10-hour journey through New Zealand's Southern Alps, we decided to test the timeless saying that life is all about the journey, not just the destination.. Renowned for its panoramic windows, the TranzAlpine train treated us to a visual spectacle, weaving through the Canterbury Plains, ascending the majestic Southern Alps, and concluding its scenic route at the west coast's Greymouth.
The return journey offered fresh perspectives on sights like Lake Sarah, nestled between Mount Horrible and the Puketeraki Range. Despite exhaustion, this TranzAlpine adventure stands out as a highlight in our New Zealand chapter, and we extend our sincere thanks to Great Journeys & the TranzAlpine train for hosting us on this unforgettable journey.
As we bid farewell to 2023, a year that took us from the beaches of Mexico to the mountains of New Zealand, we express gratitude to all who joined us on this nomadic journey. Here's to more adventures and new horizons in the coming year. See you in 2024.

➤ ABOUT US: Hi! We’re Nick & Raychel, and we want to help people open their eyes to alternative living, whether that be teaching English online, moving to Cambodia, taking advantage of working holiday visas, or building a DIY stealthy camper van to live & work on the road. Nothing is off limits when adventure is the ultimate goal. After three years of living full time van life throught Canada, Mexico and the USA, we're now car camping our way through New Zealand in a Land Rover Discovery 1.
Our goal here is to bring you weekly content where we hope to inspire you to break free & live the life you desire. On this channel, we talk everything from finances to minimalism to working online to mindset and post a weekly vlog of our daily lives. We hope you join us on our journey to see the world, save money, live minimally, and most importantly, have fun.
So if you're looking for a channel about van life, alternative living, and budget travel, you're in the right place.

    I've lived in NZ for all 30 odd years of my life, but something about videos like this are a good reminder of how beautiful it is. I honestly forget sometimes. 😄

    Lovely vid , glad you like the trip , I’ve done it in winter and it’s great , the train passes my farm just out of Christchurch and always think back to my time on the train when I did the trip ….its fun to do the trip by road but so much better by rail

    Such stunning views, I love the large windows on the train and that open area. That would be so refreshing in warm weather! Nick fell asleep 😆 I wouldn't want to miss the views!

    I was soo jealous when I saw this. I lived in NZ 55 years and this is one train tri p I never got to do. I have seen programs on the trip here in the UK. I have done the Auckland to Wellington trip which was also great but it's a long journey. Glad you liked it. Sadly with getting older I won't be returning to NZ even to see family. This was one thing on my bucket list I won't be doing. Great video thanks! 😁

    It's wild that two countries on opposite ends of the earth can be so similar, and then Australia and NZ are so different! Blows my mind 😊

    You're right Nick, there are parts of NZ that are very reminiscent of places in the USA ....and others that remind me of parts of Europe. It's a small country but the landscape is so varied.

    The Southern Alps is where the Australian and Pacific meet creating the mountain chain. Did the Scenic Plus crew give you any complementary snacks (from the Cafe carriage) as a replacement for the gourmet meals that is normally served to Scenic Plus passengers?

  • @nickandraychel

    @nickandraychel

    They didn't, they just refunded the Scenic Plus customers the "plus" upgrade price and then you could still sit in the Plus area

    Very cool guys. I know you probably read this on the train but I laughed when the Canterbury plains where labeled as the agricultural heart of New Zealand. The agricultural heart is the Waikato.

    Hey all the Kiwis here, I'm 22 y/o and am from India, I got a scholarship from Auckland university. How do you think opportunities are for a foreigner in NZ.(computer science) I love NZ and am thrilled about having a chance to live there but what is the job scene like and do you think it'll be a good idea for me to relocate there. P.s : I'm just 22 and lived my life alone. I don't have my parents and am genuinely looking for someone to guide me. Any tips or advise from you guys would be appreciated. Thanks❤

    NZ is a small country so opportunities will be limited. But if you got scholarship definitely go for it. You are young. Explore the world while studying. You can always move to Australia or somewhere else after studies. Life is full of surprises.

    Hi, I’ve done the TransAlpine a couple of times with my dad when he was in his late 80’s as a boys day out (my video kzread.info/dash/bejne/gap2w8Wmp8yqdto.htmlsi=ZRn3mnoKJiMGRXBb) . I can also highly recommend the road trip version especially in winter , done that many times (my video kzread.info/dash/bejne/fIJr0rqDg725orw.htmlsi=BA9L4tLF1tYHHWE8) which ever way it’s one of my favourite NZ trips for it’s beauty and variety.😀
