As a Japanese guy the big white guy screaming “IIE いいえ!“ sounds like a super muscular toddler having a tantrum and I had a good laugh listening to it 😂 There isn’t anything wrong with the word itself, it’s just a very simple way to say “No!” In Japanese. It’s just generally a immature way to say it as a adult. And to say it in such a angry way makes it every funnier. It can be a refined way to say no as well, but it will always rely on the context of the situation and who’s saying the word etc Edit: I am saying this without an ounce of politeness. Too many of you are snowflakes. I was not Insulting the character and I was poking fun at his choice of words. I fully damn well understand he’s just learning and that it’s to be expected. You just never see simple words being used in such a passionate fashion normally. And yet some of you feel as if I am attacking everything you love dear 😂 And the pfp is a joke.

I enjoyed this new version, but… Richard Chamberlain was a much better Blackthorne-confident and in command from the get-go, as a Pilot would have been, despite his situation. Pilots were a breed apart. The current Angin-san is a pussy. He’s a spoiled child, angry at not getting his way. He’s unsure of himself and weak. He learns Japanese too quickly, without explanation. And almost nothing was made of his desire to capture the Black ship, nor to reunite with his former crew. One short fight of a personal nature, rather than the culture clash they represented. Second, Toshiro Mifune, the original Toranaga, exuded power and authority from the moment Blackthorne first meets him. You knew this guy was a total bad-ass and never left any doubt he was completely in charge of everything, and you worried he might jump out of the TV and give you hell. He had Presence, with a capital P. The current version of Toranaga is softer, less threatening. He did a good job, but I never got the sense of menace from the actor that I did from Mifune. Omi’s role was also downplayed. His character had initial contempt for Blackthorne, but eventually gained respect and even admiration for him, all while he was busy plotting to get rid of Yabu/Yabushige (why the name change?). That was clear both in the book and in the earlier version. Obviously in a condensed version of the book, some things have to be left out, but I thought they cut some vital pieces of the puzzle. Rodrigues had a big part in the book and earlier miniseries, Father Alvito and Blackthorne’s conflicts were totally glossed over, and even Mariko and Blackthorne’s love affair was poorly done, though Anna Sawai was a serious bright spot. Blackthorne was dependent on Mariko, so no shock he was smitten with her. But we really don’t see a reason for her to fall for him, as bumbling as he appeared in this. Overall, costuming and use of Japanese were greatly improved, but all in all, the original miniseries was truer to the book, and honestly I liked it better, despite the showier version we just saw.

She also killed the gardener at Blackthorne's unknowing command, like Mariko smothered her 1 year old son. Women's duties. Many of the comments don't understand the cultural context. They fear her not because she's a woman but she belongs to a powerful Samurai Clan and was the grand-daughter of Toranaga's leading general. They didnt care about him because he was a foreigner with no Samurai lineage. Thus to back down in front of a "barbarian" is dishonorable BUT to offend a descendant of a famed Samurai General was basically a taboo.
