An act of love in Blackthorn finally accepting Mariko's sense of duty over his/her personal wants and love for one another. Also an amazing juxtaposition with the pilot episode where Blackthorn refuses to provide the same mercy by his captains pistol that he now understands holding a sword.

Intense scene right there. If this show doesn’t get nominated, I don’t know what does. I get it was released in February which is not ideal in Hollywood but I hope they remember this series

Sexual tension is real

All these characters have been through so much struggle and sadness. I am sure blackthorne's final weeks/months before shipwrecking in Japan were hellish. Starving and desperate. Watching his crew die. I hope the show gives him a happyish ending. We know Mariko doesn't get one.

I mean he's no saint himself, but clearly his time in Japan helped his character grow as a person. I anticipate the ending of this season to be bitter-sweet for him (as someone who hasn't read the book).

Technically, he was legally dead because no one would have survived the odds she saw him rush against. No shaming her on that act. She didn't cheat or betray her husband knowingly. Adultery was grounds for divorce, but wives of lords often slept with younger men. This guy's just hated she felt something for him, a barbarian. ​@rajatsinghchaudhary2946

I assume it was something about the risk of eternal damnation as she was catholic, and self harm was forbidden. Maybe the technicality of having her head chopped off would not mark her death as a suicide in the eyes of the lord. So blackthorne shoulders her burden of damnation, I think? I’m not Christian.

Other who are courageous will not have anyone to finish them after doing the ritual. If I remember Oda Nobunaga did this without someone beheading him

Samurai kids, regardless of their gender, were taught how to do the ritual suicide and told to practice it again and again. Being Samurai meant being able to control your death, and that's why they separate themselves from others and had previleges. Women usually stabbed their heart instead of doing Seppuku (Harakiri), but it seems some did do Seppuku...😂

That would’ve fucked me up so bad, I’m glad to be living in 21th Century

This one is a massive scene, but one with more bigger impact but left out from the books is when Blackthrone wants to make his sepukku, i do t remember exactly the timing, but surely not after Marikos death which shows in the series. He almost kills himself drifting away in some kind of intermediate world and dimension but he is stopped. After that everything changes for him.

I’m waiting for episode 2 soon..❤ loved Shogun!!

Jigai is used when someone doesn't have the strength to commit seppuku, which usually includes women, but is not exclusive to.

Doesn't this looks like possible jigai thought? She tied her legs together, and to me it looks like the knife is pointed to her neck rather than her lower belly. The only variation seems to be that jigai didn't require for an "assistant" to chop your head off... I'm curious, what makes you think the scene is wrong?,

Fun fact... its historical fiction based on true events. Toranaga being a fiction representation of Ieyasu Tokugawa and Blackthorn being a fiction interpretation of William Adams. this being near the end of Unification and the formation of the Tokugawa Shogunate which would end up cutting ties to the world and leaving them in isolation for hundreds of years. if i remember my history correctly the Era following the shogunate era is the Meiji restoration Era to modernize Japan and bring forth what would be the Empire of the Rising Son that would last through World War 2. Something to keep in mind while watching the show. this story is pretty finite with its ending but that does not mean it cant become more. just that the original source material is only for this one story and it would we all know that the original writing these days is kinda bad. lol

Political intrigue. Mariko wants to leave the palace and return to Toranaga, her liege. Ishido (the guy who in the end let her go) can't let her leave, else the other hostages will want to leave as well, which would weaken his position. Her last attempt failed; half of her retinue was slaughtered as they tried to get her through the guards. The only strategy left to try now is to commit suicide, which would cause so much enough political outrage that Toranaga could seize power. Mariko was not bluffing here.

Lmfao. I love how people are eating up this romanticized depiction of an almost equally belligerent historical figure with no issues, but for some strange totally mysterious reason, another particular historical figure struggles to even be acknowledged as existing the way he did.

Ah! I read the book, Ah! I think before the Chamberlain (?) Show. I do like the grit of the English man, though. I think RC was followed more consistently in that production. I do respect your sensibilities. I have remembered when Chamberlain believed he would not learn Japanese to the satisfaction of the samurai leader and other events, after all these years , no?

It's a conflict of her two worlds. As long as her second decapitated her, she would have suisided. Blackthorn loves her and doesn't want her to do it but when her Christian second doesn't turn up. He takes the job so she can die with her conscience free
