For people who may not know this is an adaptation of James Clavel's book Shogun. A fictionalized telling of the life of a real English sailor named Will Adams who arrived half-dead in Japan along with the remains of his crew during one of the most pivotal years in Japanese history: 1600. This was in the middle of a massive power struggle that would decide the future Shogun and fate of the country for centuries.

The way this trailer is cut is a massive red flag. Its focusing way to much on the girl and giving almost no attention to the foreign captain and the feudal lord. The two MEN that the story is actually about. The focus is not on them but on what appears to be a "strong empowered woman" There are more red flags in this trailer than a Chinese parade. ☠

The original miniseries got me interested in Japanese culture and history when I was 8 years old. The show always aired at Christmas time and transported me, a nerdy German child that was super into knights and castles, into a different part and culture of the world with a totally different concept of knights and very different-looking castles. This was the 90s in East Germany and we didn't have the internet, satellite TV, anime or manga so this really blew my mind. It actually led me to studying Japanese Studies later, graduating with a Master's degree, and living and working in Japan for 1.5 years. I love this story and am beyond excited to see it adapted anew.

Here in Russia, like many TV series of the 80s, it was shown already in the 90s and early 00s. At least for me, this series is from the same era as the series about Alpha and Harry the Bigfoot. One of the first foreign historical adventure series. Even though I was no more than 13 (most likely 10-11 years old), I watched it with admiration. I still remember the scene of how the hero of Richard Chamberlain, who had entered the service of the shogun, knowing all the tricks, disarmed the hero of John Rhys-Davies. I hope the new adaptation will be just as good.

In the documentary The Making of 'Shōgun' it is stated that the rise of Japanese food establishments in the United States (particularly sushi houses) is attributed to Shōgun. The clash of cultures, empires, technology, religion... @@SteventheShoehanger Japanese historians (like myself) consider the cultural and historical accuracy of Shogun about a 6 on a 10 scale. Medieval Japanese history is deep and the "time of samurai" romanticism of mid to late Tokugawa Japan as well as Neo-Confucianism having a very prominent role in Tokugawa Japan caused a lot of rewriting or reinterpretation of Sengoku Era and earlier event to better justify the military dictatorship. Toranaga is often pointed to be Tokugawa Ieyasu, but there is a fair amount of Oda Nobunaga in him as well. Shogun is an entertaining book, but the more you know Japanese History, the more flawed it becomes.

I read this book in High School and have always considered it the first book I ever read. It was the first one I read voluntarily and somehow came to understand it. It ignited within me a passion for Japanez culture and reading books, particularly historical fiction. I remember connecting with the characters and their relationships so closely, and my mind's eye had created this world and the people. It was as if I escaped and traveled, that's when books clicked with me. FX was once known for amazing shows (i.e. Sons of Anarchy, The Americans etc.). I imagine this retelling of Shōgun will only be loosely based on James Clevell's book. I just hope a great story and characters aren't sacrificed for "ideological elements" which has become too common in shows today and almost ruining them. This Shōgun could be a masterpiece and open a great story to a whole new generation. It certainly looks good based on the trailer.

it's not like game of thrones at all lmao... Just read it and see what you think. This and the Masters of Rome series are S tier novels for historical fiction. Shogun is very fluid in its writing style, with POV changes sometimes within the same page with no breaks, using only paragraphs to delineate between POVs, but once you just accept the fluidity it becomes a wild ride. The only similarity this might have with Game of Thrones is how brutal it can be. The opening section will enlighten you as to why.@@Tolandruth

I have the original Shogun miniseries from 1980 on DVD (based on the adaptation of James Clavel's book) from my parents and I love it! Which is crazy because I only watch it when I was in my 20s (I'm 34 now) so it has an entirely different vibe to most modern day TV series and movies, yet it blew me away. So I hope this can live up to the same caliber of the original TV series.

@@davidgill3356 It gets worse. They are all speaking in modern English. This destroyed immersion. In the original 1980 tv series the Japanese actors spoke feudal era Japanese with NO SUBTITLES. This was on purpose to put you the audience in the POV of Blackthorn who also did not understand them and was desperately trying to figure out what was being said by reading eyes/faces and body language. It turned even the most boring and mundane conversations into scenes where you were hanging on every word even when you didn't understand. Also Mariko in the original story was a very well written egalitarian character She used her physical weakness as a woman to her advantage because the men did not view women as a military threat so she could travel to places Toranaga couldn't go and spy on his enemies and relay important messages helping him to become the Shogun. Marika was also a much older married woman the actress playing her looks too young. Everything about this show reeks of ignorant modern progressives making what they think is an empowering feminist story that is in reality demeaning and insulting to women.

@@juang.4718 My opinion, from best to worst: 1. Tai Pan, 2. Shogun, 3. Gai-Jin, 4. Whirlwind, 5. Noble House, 6. King Rat. Shogun is great, but Tai Pan is epic. I give Noble House fifth place, but it really wasn't too bad. The only reason why I wasn't as interested in Noble House is probably because 1960 is too recent for me. Stock markets and Russian spies - it is not bad, just not as much of a historical context as I would have liked. King Rat isn't nearly on the same level as the rest, and you could really leave it for last. If later you find you don't want to finish the entire saga, then at least it was King Rat that was left out.

I don't know man. Another typical "asian woman submissive to white man." The asian woman had no issues living her way. Then white man shows up and she is automatically submissive to him. And you can see that the opposite is not allowed. Look at Jay Chou's Green Hornet. The white lady refuses the advances of Jay Chou. Look at Matt Damon's The Great Wall. The female is automatically submissive to him.
