Seymour Duncan P-Rails - Worth the Hype?

Музыка

Here’s a partscaster I own that has Seymour Duncan P-Rails installed. I hope my brief rundown of these pickups will help you decide if they are what you are looking for or not.

The P-Rails ( I bought a set) suffers from 'Design before Voice' problem. More attention was put into making the P-90/Rail/Humbucking combination happen, that Seymour Duncan forgot to VOICE the pickups to be 'more pleasing'. As proof, for all its available combinations and years in the market, the P-Rails is still not a popular option on electric guitars today, the SD 59's and JB combination is still king in the market, again specifically because the SD 59's & JB sound great individually & combined together (e.g. Voice in Duet), while the PRails are not. So I am modding my PRails set to have the 'Voices' I need for my kind of music. Live and learn. I would not have bought them, knowing what I know today.

Wow this comment is very insightful. I think what you’ve said makes a lot of sense based on how these pickups felt for me. I’m getting them replaced in this Strat very soon and I will post an update video about what pickups I installed instead and why.

@@k10_music If I may add, the neck prail (check the SD tone chart) if in flipped position has a tone signature identical to the SD JB pickup (that's the real reason why people like it flipped - it sounds like a JB, and not because the rail is nearer the top like a strat), and the neck prail is also lower output (check the SD chart) than the JB. Meanwhile the bridge Prail's tone signature is perfectly flat, so flipping it does not help.

Interesting comments. FWIW, I'm about to put a "bridge model" p-rail in the NECK position on an HSS strat, REVERSED (P-rail towards bridge. Yeah, this is REPLACING a vintage SD JB I've had in that slot for fifteen or so years...so we'll see how THAT goes. haha. Of course, to make things crazier, the wiring is fairly innovative, what with push pull HB/sc, plus a blender, and coil selection options for p-rail single or P-90. Should be either exotically wonderful or a complete train wreck. :-) @@rexsolomon6325
