I was also diagnosed as Schizoid but I’m a very empathetic person and would never dream of committing violent crimes like this. It annoys me that there seems to be zero information on treatment for this condition.

There is enough research on that, although treatment of personality disorders is hard in general, but even every general book on psychology has some information about treatment possibilities for SPD, so no need to do specific research. Don't expect miracles, though. I don't understand how you come to your statement, especially since you even got diagnosed, but apparently haven't gotten further information. Probably from the US, the worst first world country in the world for mental health issues...

Elinor Greenberg, Salman Akhtar, and Jeffrey Seinfeld, among others, have written books addressing the treatment of SPD and other PDs, but a lot of online info just says "bad prognosis!" with no additional info.

I must say that when I saw the title, Schizoid really stood out to me. It is really hard to believe that someone with SPD, pathological apathy and loneliness seeking behavior in addition to a significantly decreased sexdrive (if any) would actively go out and commit such a crime without extreme impuslive traits. I think it would be much more likely that they would imagine all this in there fantasy world if anything else. Its important to keep in mind that we are talking about the disorder (that has such strong schizoid features that it would impair the schizoids own life) so the current results of these studies don't not seem very sensible. It appears that the isolation component of the disorder is the main point you and these researchers focus on in this section of your video. Is this research taking into account that these can occour in so many disorders (dont even have to ego syntonic). The only scenario where I find that likely is if a SPD person have stronger or more pronounced comorbid disorders that compell them or they dont have SPD but just schizoid traits and other disorders. I dont want to sound like a SPD apologist or something but it just really boggles my mind. Nonetheless, there rest of the video seems very consclusive and is very informational. Thank you Dr. Keep it up!

SPD is associated with decreased sexual activity, however that's due to the fact that it 'takes two to tango' and consensual sexual activity requires social interaction.

interesting point! food for thought! i think the link to underline in schizoid isolation when compared with other disordered causes would be the erosion of empathy, sufficient isolation does that to any individual but a low presence of it to begin with, as the overlap with narcissistic recurrence, could contribute to how easily destructive thoughts are followed by destructive actions also it would have to be further looked into expressions of sexuality as a learned power mechanism, a person doesnt need to be interested in it themselves to believe it has valuable connotations

@@tracieday8661 It depends on the person, and some of the literature differentiates covert and overt types. Seinfeld suggested that some, not all, schizoids may "fill the empty core" with things like one night stands, but this isn't common with the more classic type of schizoid talked about in the DSM-V. Some have normal sex drives, but dont want sex with another person, some have no sex drive. I'm diagnosed with SPD and am asexual and celibate, sex drive is totally non-existent, but that's not true of all schizoids and I wonder if there may also be a gender component there. But SPD can include individuals with low or high sex drive, people with multiple one night stands who cheat on partners, and people who shun all sexual activity.

Thank you once again Dr., I've always wondered in cases like these, if it's sex or violence or both what drives these murderers to commit these crimes but now I have a different perspective to analyze these type of homicides.

I noticed his potential rage at the fact that his father was "Unknown" on his birth certificate. His mother attempted to leave him at the home for unwed mothers, but her father forced her to retrieve the child. Potentially she was full of unacknowledged rage as well, although her external demeanor was meek and mild. She may have papered it over with her Christian ideology. All speculation here of course.

@@ellenfalls1330 He was raised to believe that his grandmother was his mom and his mother was his sister. He never found out the truth until he was in college. Then some girl he was dating dumped him. She had dark long hair parted in the middle. Just like the victims.

I've always loved her. I still love her greatly. But I did have a little - a little bit of a grudge against Momma."_ _This "grudge" became apparent in an eerie way that would define Rader's future a serial killer_ . _"When he was young, his mother's ring got caught on a couch spring, and she couldn't get her hand out. She apparently was terrified and told him to go get help. And he felt the first stirrings of arousal over this," explained Dr. Ramsland_ . _She continued, "It was exciting to him to see a woman helpless, and it was the beginning of his ideas about women that what he wanted from them was to keep them trapped and helpless and looking to him in terror. That became imprinted in his mind and became the image he was always after"_ .

Evidence suggests quite a broad range of percentages regarding an APD diagnosis. This indicates a fair amount of inconsistency in findings. I wonder if perpetrators experience certain symptoms associated with all of these diagnoses at higher levels of intensity. Interesting stuff.

I’m wondering if any of them gains a learning experience and stops. You say the odds are low? Obsessive compulsive traits? That’s my answer. Used measuring equipment to hang up clothes. No waste baskets. Threatens to murder victims if they throw up because of compulsive cleanliness??

Where and how did you go about getting your diagnosis? Whenever I visit a psychiatrist they give me a fairly basic questionnaire and just label me depressed and socially anxious.

@@xxcrysad3000xx I've been seeing the same therapist for a year. Along the way, I disagreed with the diagnosis, but then a second and third therapist saw me and saw the same symptoms in me. They even had me take a psych eval. You say you see therapists and they give you questionnaires? Shouldn't they spend more time with you and discuss more specifics?

@@SexiTRfan Generally no, I see a psychiatrist once in a while to get a prescription filled but not a therapist who delves deep into whatever problems I may be having. But I agree, it'd be a good thing if they did.

@@xxcrysad3000xx you need to see a a therapist if you're working with a psych. Talk therapy works in sync with medication and those professionals can communicate about your care and what you need. A therapist spends much more time with you and your thoughts and can help a psychiatrist get you on the right medication if they see something.

I watched a video where Ted Bundy says that he started out with violent porn but that he outgrew it over time as his fantasies became increasingly more extreme. Another issue I'd like to point out, is that consent is an unclear issue. It doesn't prove anything really, because there is a legal obligation to acquire consent. All law abiding people are under pressure to seek consent so it is not easy to say whether or not a law abiding BDSM person might like to engage in something non-consensual if they could get away with it. Its just unknown.

Elena B. You may be right that he lacks insight into what caused him to become more extreme. But that doesn’t mean that he’s lying about his usage of porn. His description of escalation is a bit too insightful for somebody who’s never looked at porn. I’m sure most BDSM people are not the result of incest, but it’s possible that they had someone in their childhood who was as violent as Ted’s grandfather Also, I did some research and Ted’s step father was a good guy. Ted’s mother moved away from her father eventually. So Ted was telling the truth about living in a good home. The problem was that Ted had probably already been abused by his grandfather at a younger age and so his psychopathy had already begun to take hold

Albert DeSalvo may or may not have committed all or some of the “Boston Strangler” murders in the early 1960s. At the very least he appears to have taken a page from his father’s book and became a violent rapist. Please consider speculating on this classic case. Also from Boston, medical school student Philip Markoff (the “Craigslist Killer”). Thank you, Dr. Grande. I believe you’re changing a lot of neural pathways in those of us paying attention!

Hitchcock's film "Frenzy" comes to mind with this topic.

Ted Bundy believed that his longstanding obsession with/addiction to violent porn played an instrumental role in the creation of a fantasy life that led to certain paraphilias and eventually, down the path to the extreme anti-social behavior that characterized his crimes. Psychiatrists like Dr. Al Carlisle, who assessed him, concluded this, as well. Clearly, in the last interview, he was trying to relieve his family of any guilt and blame, providing some explanation to them and to loyal friends from earlier days, some of whom would find the confessions he was making in his final two days shocking, (despite the indirect allusions to his crimes, given by him in the third person over the years). He does, in fact, state in that last interview with Dr. Dobson that he is NOT blaming pornography as being responsible, relieving himself of culpability for his crimes. In focusing solely on porn, however, other factors -- mental health factors, etc. -- that played a part, are not covered, unfortunately. Ted Bundy did not want to die, wanted more time to prepare for his death and needed more time to give more comprehensive confessions that would also delve into the why of it all (specifically he was requesting 3 months more of life, if I recall). He was still confessing on the morning of his death and while he walked down the hall to the death chamber... All around tragic.

Great info., as always! One thought -- while it's true that childhood experiences of sexual abuse raise odds of later offending hugely over the population baseline (500% per your stats - ?; sounds quite believable, as trauma impacts can be huge!), it's not the case that virtually everyone who survives sexual abuse goes on to offend. I often encounter this mistaken assumption in the general public -- and, sadly, among some survivors. If an old-ish statistic remains correct, fewer than a third of abuse survivors go on to offend as adults...? Just for viewers to keep in mind 😊....

Great video, a Grande a day keeps the sanity away. :) I'd love an example of schizoid or schizotypal killers from the anals of sexual crime (yes, pun intended). On the topic of Obsessive Compulsive, when I was researching pedophilia trying to understand my father I found a study that claimed exlusive pedophiles have obsessive thoughts about children, it isn't actually a preference in the typical sense - its more of an absolute obsession they can't shake from their minds, that's why they continue to offend repeatedly seemingly without any self-control and are often considered incurable. They even found most pedophiles don't find sexual satisfaction when they victimize a child, its just an obsession like those people who clean endless or close closet-doors repeatedly with no actual enjoyment, purpose or reason. As for sexual serial killers I have found the vast majority live with their mothers well into adulthood, or at minimum had very controlling mothers, while serial killers (non-sexual) often had very controlling fathers. NOW, I have a treat for you if you have not seen this interview with Ed Kemper. It is a masterpiece. He actually reformed HIMSELF and let two girls go after years of killing them... in the interview he discloses his rather sad and creepy childhood, and how he finally came to terms that when he was killing his victims he was envisioning killing his mother. The dude actually let the girls go and walked into the police station! Clap clap clap, he's my favorite anti-anti-anti-anti-anti-hero. The Narcissist's Scapegoat Ed also killed his grandmother and while in the psychiatric hospital he was trusted to give psych assessments to other patients. In this way he learned how to answer the psychiatrist’s questions and was able to convince them he was no longer a danger to society. When he was released after killing the grandmother he began his killing and dismembering of college girls. He was very smart, very polite and gave a good impression of a nice guy. He was also extremely damaged and dangerous. You are right about him giving himself up but only after he killed his mother and committed post-mortem sexual acts on her body!

The Narcissist's Scapegoat ....reformed? Even he believes he’s a safety risk to women to this very day. He refuses parole. If the source of his problem, his mother, is long gone why is he still dangerous? He over and over again blames his mother for all his horrific acts. Since he brutally murdered her ( and her friend) and performed sexual acts on her deceased body he knew he’d be caught. Thus his giving himself up to police. His mother does not have a voice to share her side of the story and that is quite unfortunate. He’s pure evil, or psychopathic if I were to describe him. After all, he killed his grandparents as a young teen and that is an extremely important fact to point out. It casts doubt on the theory that he had Mommy issues. Not everyone that kills their mother ( an infrequent event thank goodness) has mommy issues. His quite possibly and highly likely phony and pretend insight into himself and behaviors is a lot of bull and obviously picked up from years of therapy. Also I think the creep just enjoys hearing himself talk. In regards to pedophiles and their what often seems to be very high sex drive, maybe obsessiveness and acting impulsively is the reason for that. I do believe though that those are just symptoms of an abnormal and deviant sexual disorder. I regrettably believe they derive much sick pleasure from the actual act of having sex with children.

Ok as a criminologist we see most homicides as sexual homicides and I know that sounds super weird. I know we are referring to this in different ways though. So if someone kills their girlfriend or wife that’s still considered a sexual homicide even if no sexual assault is involved. That does not mean they would be charged that way just that’s how it’s classified.

I suppose it depends on what you mean by "paraphilia" and "deviance". My sexual fantasies are realistic, involving someone killing me rather than the other way around (of course, in reality, I'm just ignored rather than being taken to someone's place just to be murdered, but if I ever were taken to someone's place, I know what would happen to me). I wouldn't want to commit a sexual homicide; I'd rather just stay home.

I've wondered since I first heard about the Chris Watts case if he is schizoid at least somewhat. He doesn't have all the characteristics, but so many people who knew him talked about how profoundly introverted he is. I wonder if it isn't the schizoid personality disorder by itself that increases the risk of becoming a killer, but the schizoid combined with a cluster b, anti-social, psychopathic or narcissistic personality, that increases the risk, because the cluster b schizoid spends so much time living in his head or his imagination vs. an extroverted person, that predatory fantasies have more time to grow.

Some schizoids wear a mask of friendliness and engagement while feeling withdrawn on the inside. From Wikipedia: "Descriptions of the schizoid personality as "hidden" behind an outward appearance of emotional engagement have been recognized since 1940 with Fairbairn's description of "schizoid exhibitionism," in which the schizoid individual is able to express a great deal of feeling and to make what appear to be impressive social contacts yet in reality gives nothing and loses nothing. Because he or she is "playing a part," his or her personality is not involved." Chris doesn't have every trait, but as far as I know a person doesn't have to have every single listed trait of a disorder to have the disorder at some level. The thing that makes people interested in his case is how he didn't appear to be what he actually turned out to be, and the hidden schizoid, wearing a mask that conceals his withdrawn, possibly depersonalized inner world fits what we see of Chris. I think he's a schizoid psychopath.

First off I can think whatever I want, and can post my opinions like everyone else to the extent the channel owner allows. From what I can see, thousands of others post their opinions as well. I'm NOT the one who is calling schizoids violent. I said that in my opinion, if someone is schizoid AND has a predatory/cluster b personality disorder as well, then being schizoid, which involves being very withdrawn and living in an internal world much of the time, would help feed predatory thoughts and imagining more so than someone who is more extroverted. I'm by no means the only person saying that. I think the video we've seen of Chris, some where he's just standing around as Shan'ann talks, and the ones right after the murders, are not enough to show how he comes across. It seems that every single person who talks about him talks about how extremely quiet or how extremely withdrawn they thought he was. Like I said, you don't have to have every single trait of a personality disorder to have that personality disorder. From what I could see of him, and from what people have said about him, he seems to me to have most of the traits of SPD. The basic list from the DSM-V is: 1 Neither desires nor enjoys close relationships, including being part of a family.2 Almost always chooses solitary activities.3 Has little, if any, interest in having sexual experiences with another person.4 Takes pleasure in few, if any, activities.5 Lacks close friends or confidants other than first-degree relatives.6 Appears indifferent to the praise or criticism of others.7 Shows emotional coldness, detachment, or flattened affectivity. You need 4 of the above to be classified with SPD, not all 7. (3) is the only one I would definitely say he does not have. (1) He had a family but seems to have only gone through the motions of relating to them, and ultimately showed that he had no emotion for them. Shan'ann was his ticket to looking successful and not much else imo. (2) fits. His job was mostly solitary. He had few if any other activities beyond housework and his job. (4) His only hobby was memorizing NASCAR data, which is solitary and as far as I have seen, his only interest. (5) He had that one friend who lives in CA, and maybe one other from high school. He himself talked about having few friends in high school AND not a single date in high school, and that was despite apparently being pretty nice looking. People said his only friends in CO were Shan'ann's friends The DSM says the SPD person can be friends with first degree relatives so saying he was close with his parent family doesn't dispute him being SPD. (6) He had little (not no, but little) reaction to being criticized by Shan'ann. (7) That pretty much is what everyone said about him. I personally don't think the SPD caused him to commit murder. He had either psychopathy or anti-social PD, or perhaps covert narcissism, and the strong internal fantasy world of SPD didn't help matters, but would not have caused the murders in isolation.

E. B. By the way, if you're upset with those who say schizoids are violent, why don't you direct your arguments at THOSE people? As for what I'm saying, if someone who is diagnosed as schizoid is NOT diagnosed with a cluster b or other predatory disorder, what I'm saying does not apply to them. I don't appreciate you claiming that I'm "really vilifying" people when I'm plainly talking about multi-diagnosed people. On the other hand, you are claiming that people with schizoid PD can never be violent, which is dishonest in itself in my opinion. What evidence do you have that those diagnosed with SPD are never violent or can never be diagnosed with a cluster b disorder? Because that's what you're saying by claiming I'm vilifying someone by saying that they can.

E. B. Please direct your "consequences" threat at those who ARE saying that a single diagnosis of schizoid predicts violence, not at me, because I never said that, despite your insinuations. I think you want to attack those who say that a schizoid diagnosis predicts violence but are afraid to because of the consequences (leakage), so you indirectly attack them by pretending that I said something I didn't say, and then attack me for what you're pretending I said. Thus getting your point out there without directly attacking your real object. I don't appreciate getting dragged into your hidden agenda.

I'm having trouble trying to understand the motivation of the sexual homicide offender.... I'm sure it can be different for each, but for the last category you mentioned.... Do they need the deadly violence to satisfy themselves sexually? Or is it about enjoying the sex for the sex and the violence for the violence, and the overall sense of control..? I have so many questions,

i do wonder if the chemical rush in the brain from sex is actually similar to one from violence, if the construct of ''adrenaline junkie'' applies to murder as a step in crime escalation, since the murdering strangers thing can come from such a variety of motivations

It is in my opinion when I have occasional periods of mania I get I high libido and it's for me not lust but the rush and I was exposed to pornography at a young age so that did a number on me Im not a killer I have had urges that are similar too what I expirence when I want too have sex during those periods

I think it was a borderline. I never got to meet her. He grieved scilently. He never talked much about what happened. I felt very sorry for him. He's unapproachable. Very difficult to talk to. Keeps everything to himself. I wanted to help but he didn't accept any. I'm sorry Dr. Todd if I made you uncomfortable. Oh, and guess what. He's a doctor too😂😂😂

I'm here because I have a degree in the field, AND I have been targeted before and narrowly escaped victimization.

I will probably be banned from Mr. PhD's site but shouldn't the title of his article be Sexual Homicidal types instead of Sexual Homicide? I could be wrong because I flunked English in high school.

Schizoid is like extreme introversion which includes lots of fantasies. As you can guess,(generally) the more a person fantasizes about something the more he/she would want to make it a reality, couple that with some antisocial factors and you have a recipe for trouble.
