Jodi Arias Murder Case | Borderline, Narcissistic, or Nothing?

This video answers the question: Can I review the case of Jodi Arias? She was convicted in 2015 of murdering a young man named Travis Alexander, who was somebody with whom she was in a relationship. Support Dr. Grande on Patreon: / drgrande
I look at the timeline, but also the mental health and personality characteristics that may have been going on in this case. To be clear, I'm not diagnosing anybody, rather just speculating based on the evidence that's available. Jodi Arias was born in 1980 and Travis Alexander was born in 1977. The murder occurred on June 4th 2008. In 2015, she was found guilty of first-degree murder and on sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. One of the reasons this was interesting, is this juxtaposition with post-traumatic stress disorder and borderline personality disorder. There were different diagnoses from different clinicians. Whenever we see mental health and the law come together, this is a dangerous intersection.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual the DSM, which contains these mental disorders was written for treatment, it wasn't written to explain why people commit crimes.
Symptom criteria for borderline personality disorder: frantic efforts to avoid abandonment, unstable relationship pattern, identity disturbance, impulsivity and at least two areas that are potentially self damaging, suicidal behavior, affective instability, chronic feelings of emptiness, inappropriate or intense anger or difficulty controlling anger, paranoid ideation or dissociation
Symptom criteria for narcissistic personality disorder: grandiose sense of self-importance, fantasies about success wealth and power, believing oneself to be special or unique, requiring excessive admiration, a sense of entitlement, exploiting other people interpersonally, lack of empathy, jealousy, arrogance

@@TriXorcist Agreed. Narcissistic abuse is definitely a thing. To say that there is a "stigma" and that it's bad and hurts those with cluster B personality disorders is an injustice to those who have suffered at the hands of these individuals. They obviously need help but most of them don't seek out genuine help and a lot continue to abuse others. This is coming from someone who has been in more than one abusive relationships with actual diagnosed cluster B's and have known MANY people who have been with either diagnosed or obviously disordered individuals. I know the damage it causes. I've lived it and I've seen it up close and personal. Instead of being so worried about these people why not worry about their victims?! I see so many people protecting these abusers and don't care to help those who were abused by these disordered individuals.

@@LuvBugBlaqkHart because you can't put everyone in a bag as "cluster B". You never really hear about the people in cluster B, also a lot of abuse comes from borderline or histrionic people who hurt themselves more than they hurt others, we've all met borderline or ASPD people who are less intense on the scale and who haven't hurt anyone but they'd never admit to having these disorders because of the stigma that you have to be bad. I agree abuse is a serious issues and there are many NPD and ASPD people that take the trophy at committing the worst crimes. But what about the majority of people with some traits and how about the people who barely qualify. You can bet that by statistics alone at large many more people have traits, then more people barely qualify and then some 1 or 2% are the ones who fully qualify and a much lesser amount are the ones much worse, with higher scores and more symptoms in the list. So we hear a lot from the very worst in the list... Since schizophrenia is hard to hide, we know better that there's some that hurt others more and are violent and other that live in torment too but don't bother anyone. And we know that only the much, much worse in the spectrum tend to commit crimes. I think the trend is a little different for cluster B and other PDs but I'm pretty sure that the super negative perception is a little bit because most people with only traits or who qualify but are not high in the spectrum do not out themselves out of fear but mostly live without doing much harm. There's a neuroscientist that made brain images of people with ASPD like mainly serial killers and the found out he had the same type of brain image (fMRI), but he's a good worker, father, has not committed any crimes, he maybe just is not very emotional & uses his mind on his research & career ? How many sorta 'cold' people are there who are inventors, scientists, legislators etc. Just because we only hear from the worst of the worst doesn't mean we know what the average or low on the spectrum majority are all abusers, in my clinical experience is that like I said most people have traits, of a few PDs, then there's people who barely qualify, and the people that do qualify & are just as problematic as your typical neurotic person. But when you go to the low functioning, these people don't blend in, they can't hide they have these disorders because of impulsivity & crimes. But you will never really hear from the people who are less afflicted with those diseases or of victims of those people. What you hear on the media and catches your attention is the extremes. Now I'm not saying those PDs aren't bad, they are, but just like all there PDs most who do shit like consistently abuse their partners are the low functioning, worst part of the spectrum and it's that way for most disorders, and even for "normal" people. What you see in jails are normally the people who've have the worst lives, poverty, traumas, bad friends, etc. So just a thought from my experience with people clinically. You can't put everybody in one big box and say they're all abusive. mentally ill does not equal evil.

I know she said (later) that she shot first, but the forensics don’t support that. The picture of him sitting in the shower is also weird - who does that? I can see it making sense that she kept asking about the trip and he said the same things he said in his texts/emails and she snapped. Maybe stabbing is a cry for help? still can’t figure out why she’d stab first if she really wanted to kill him.

This was definitely premeditated. She took her license plates off when she got to travis' house so no one could take down her plates info. That in itself should be the BIGGEST sign of premeditation. She was stopped by police after killing Travis because her license plate was upside down and the one in front wasn't even on and in her car or something like that. But both license plates were on correctly when she rented the car. She turned her phone off when she left CA and was on her way to AZ so she couldn't be tracked. She didn't turn it back on until she was en route to Salt Lake City away from AZ where if it was pinged it could be believable where she lied and gave a fictictious route for her road trip (obviously leaving out the real route she took to AZ). She told police her phone died for almost 24 hrs. She later said that her phone charger was in her back seat but stated earlier she couldn't find it and that's why it was off for so long. She purposely bought the third gas can in cash. She borrowed the two others. She saved all her other receipts that weren't any near arizona they were all paid credit card. So she could show proof if necessary. When the procesecutor, Juan Martinez, confronted her about the receipt of the third gas can purchased. She lied and said she returned the gas immediately because she miscalculated on how much gas she needed. There was no return transaction for the gas can at the date and walmart location she provided. Martinez also stated that she did in fact have all 3 gas cans when she went to salt lake city after the murder of travis to her friends house. He then showed receipts of gas station fill up before she went to Travis to show separate transactions all for gas and how the three were for filing up the gas cans as they did the calculations on how much gas was, mileage, and how much the gas cans held, etc.) .Also, she was first offered a red car but declined and accepted a white car and rented it like an hour away and not in her home town. She dyed her hair so shed look different. She set up the alibi by going to that guy's house in salt lake city. She set the staged robbery where 3 insignificant items were taken from the home including cash that she had was conveniently stolen and obviously the GUN, at a time when it was one of the only times her grandparents left Jodi alone and wouldn't be back for a substantial amount of time. Jodi allegedly then left the house during that time when the robbery happened. So to summarize it all up: 1) dyed her hair right before she killed travis 2) rented a car an hour away from her home when there are several rental car companies in her town 3) turned down a red car and chose white 4) took her license plates off the car when she parked at travis when she murdered him 5) borrowed two gas cans and purchased a third in cash (transactions at gas station reflected filling up all three cans) 6) all other transactions were made by credit or debit cards in CA or near Salt Lake City and saved in a shoe box at home (no receipts or transactions made anywhere near arizona so she left no tracks of her going and being there) 7) staged a robbery at her grandparents house so she could take the gun 8) purposely turning her phone off once she went off track the route she would later lie and give police for her road trip to see her friend in Salt Lake City. And turn it back on once she was back on her fictitious route How in the world does the above NOT prove premeditation?!??

I bet it's the case of misdiagnosis with these people. They usually have some traits of BPD but can as well have traits of psychopathy and sociopathy. I was diagnosed with BPD, I am very impulsive but working on it. I even got more impulsive after therapy and prescribed drugs. It's better when I do it alone. I wanted to get know some borderlines and I met some really messy people. For instance I met a young man with hiv that from the very beginning of our relationship recorded me, wrote down all my details just in case something went wrong. We were friends and I helped him, for instance when he was diagnosed with possible tumor I paid the medical bills and agreed that he could stay overnight for several days in my apartment. When I was asleep he searched my things, my id etc. I told him many details of my life and about my relation with my business partner etc. One day I told him I needed more time for myself and I cannot be in such an intense relation, he trashed the recordings and the fact he has all the details about me at my face. He threatened to contract me with hiv by piercing my eye, to kill my cats, to call banks in which I had business credits and tell trash about me so they could sue me for fraud, he threated to mess with my business partner. He wanted me to pay him. I did at that moment. Fortunately I have a record of it and the record of our chat on facebook in which he reveals his threats and we talk about the case. Maybe one day I will report on him, I have 5 years to do so, 3 are left now. When he told me all these things I went into total breakdown, I cried I started to beat myself into face. We were going along the street , I begged and cried for help some people, I was crying and shaking and he was very toned and cold blood, he told the people who encountered that I am mentally ill, and that he is my friend and he will take care of me. Only after some weeks I came to conclusion I could have gone to police and report him. At first I reacted with insanity, that's how I usually react under stress situations. I am a total mess at these moments. I met also some girl, we become friends, and she often got me into very fierce discussions in which she tried to prove me that I am wrong about things we were talking about. Even if I told her ok, I am wrong about it, it doesn't matter for me, she would constantly go back to it imposing me her own beliefs on the matter. She was quite manipulative and had a prescription on every aspect of my life that were accidentally revealed in discussions. I couldn't stand that and besides she was quite nice, intelligent and interesting person I gave up this relation. Now I usu avoid new people. I think that living without diagnosis is much better. It's much more constructive to focus on different traits that can be messy in life that on diagnosis that resolves nothing. Sometime I made a look-see on the way borderlines are treated by courts here in Poland and I see that borderlines are treated much more harsh than regular people. Regular people without bd diagnosis are often treated much lighter in more serious crimes than bd.

I don't have BPD but I have a family member who does. I think a lot of people witness some of the behavior harmful to others, read that BPD has an associated deficit in empathy, and see that BPD is in the same class as ASPD and think, "Oh they are unhinged psychopaths". But the empathy isn't really a "lack" as a global aspect of personality generally, but something that lapses when they feel threatened, and often misses the target. It's just inaccurate sometimes. People with BPD, in my experience, tend to be very empathetic otherwise. The pain people with BPD feel is really intense even if its hard for those such as myself without it to really have a means of grasping. When someone feels threatened, of course their empathy levels are going to drop. Like if someone was being attacked by a mugger with a knife, are they going to be like, "awee, this person must have had such an awful upbringing"? No. Fight or flight is the number one concern in that moment. When someone with BPD feels threatened in the security of a relationship or whatnot, it seems to me that it's intense enough that the brain is interpreting it as a legitimate attack and responds accordingly. So I think people should try having a little more empathy for those with BPD. I'm not a clinician, that's just what I have observed having a family member with it, and having a friend with it as well.

I don't believe "manipulation" is a characteristic of BPD. I think the reason why a lot of people associate "manipulative behaviour" with BPD is because the behaviour appears to be manipulative, when actually the person with BPD is trying to cope with an uncomfortable situation. Maybe it's the fear of abandonment, or they're offended by something someone said. The resulting behaviour and response is an attempt to compensate for the threat they perceive. If they're offended or embarrassed by something someone has said, they will say whatever it takes to eliminate the threat of being offended or embarrassed. So, say, something happens that makes them look bad or stupid, they will blame someone else, possibly by lying or making up a story and convincing people that it's true. It's an act of desperation. It's their way of surviving and coping. The threat may seem trivial to most, normal people, but for people with BPD, the threshold is much lower. Small, trivial threats to them appear magnified. They can be highly sensitive.

Let's not forget the butcher knife JA clearly brought with her as well...staying stealth was very critical detail in her plan...ie hair color changes day prior, 3 gas cans, cell phone off, disposal of her "tools" ..I'm very puzzled about TA allowed her inside his home, but perhaps explained by her telling TA that she was sorry and wanted his help in fixing the problem she had created...TA had been a very forgiving soul and JA clearly is a very seasoned pathological liar who was able to convince TA that she was remorseful and wanted redemption. TA was in his sexual prime and hadn't had any sexual contact with a woman for some time so he was quite horny and couldn't resist JA sexual advances as she knew exactly what would get him to lay with her...one last time for old times sake...last goodbye and sealed w a kiss...and a shot in the head and a few stabs in the back and the coup de gra...grand finale...throat cut...JA is demon possessed and I have zero doubt about this. She is a Succubus who also performed oral sex on young boys...that case was put on hold...I also wonder if she had been sexually explicit with the teenage son of her former boyfriend Derald Brewster that she lived with for a few months/years?

She doesn't have healthy relationships with her family, or long term friendships. She didn't have a healthy relationship with her school and subsequently dropped out. Her unstable sense of identity is reflected in: her taking on Travis's identity as well as defining herself by being his girlfriend, (becoming a mormon, working for the same company, wearing a shirt that says " Travis Alexander's "). Once this was threatened, it threatened her whole sense of being, leading to her emotionally disproportionate reactions. Also, not having a direction with respect to a career. She also disconnected/ dissociated as many do during times of real or imagined abandonment. She appeared to have other traits that came out during the trial that align with ASPD and NPD. I am not diagnosing her, however I think she is a cluster B mess.

I realize I’m late to this video...but you’re 100% WRONG on SO many levels. I’m actually shocked you made this video w/out doing more research. I’ve watched many studies on Arias, read books & also watched every hour of the entire trial. Everything you stated she actually spoke about in her OWN journal. She said verbatim...”I feel so empty inside & just want to end it all.” Her family had a very tumultuous relationship w her...due to paranoia. Her own parents spoke to Esteban Flores (the day after she was arrested) about how she’s been “a little strange” for many many years....never allowing her family in her own home. Her mom begged her to get help. Arias’s moods would scarily shift from one min to the next & that frightened her mother. Her friends would call her parents in the mid of the night to get her help...years before meeting Alexander. Also, the entire murder WAS calculated & 100% premeditated. She went to great lengths (which many people addressed in the comments) to prepare (stealing the 22) covering her tracks, gathered supplies, disguised herself/hair, rented a car outta of her city & altered the license plates, stopped at an ex bf for extra gas cans, disabled her phone while in AZ & so on & on & on & on. She’s clearly sociopathic & possibly has BPD. I feel like a tremendous amount of research needed to be done before this video was made. Oh & it’s blatantly obvious regarding the photos. Actually common sense. She coaxed him in the shower to take pictures of him in there so he’s naked & vulnerable & trapped in a tiny shower stall. But she didn’t plan very well. Alexander put up a fight. But since she stabbed him in the heart first...he most likely stood up from being seated in the stall...coughed blood into the sink. Hence the blood splatter pattern. And while in shock, she repeatedly stabbed him in the back & head. He prob stumbled down the hallway to escape & collapsed. She then slit his throat & from the photos on his camera, she dragged him back into the shower to rinse off the DNA. (Evidence photo of her dragging his dead body back into the bathroom). That is where she took one more blow out on him & shot him in the head. The shell casing was found on TOP of a pool of blood. The part of his skull where he was shot would’ve taken him down instantly. The bullet came last. That’s been proven. Ok, my rant is done. I watched that trial & the difference done.

Another thing that not many notice is that in a recorded interogation interview she says the EXACT day their 5 month relationship ended (June 29th) and its reported she stabbed him 29 times. The entire murder was definetly premeditated and very personal/rage filled. Theres a record online of all of their texts, emails, her journal entries and time markers that also show he allegedly was going to take Jodi to Cancun then after talking to his close friends about Mimi he called the company to change Jodi from his plus one to Mimi and told Jodi that it was cancelled but she found out the truth that he wanted to take Mimi instead of her. I think this escalated to her revealing and threatening to show the church the phone sex recordings she took of them and that explains the explosive text exchange between the two right before the murder when he says multiple things about her ruining/ going to ruin his life etc. When the blackmail didnt work and she realized he was taking another girl (Mimi) seriously she became enraged, planned the whole thing out, popped up at his house 'for sex' (many reports of her just showing up in his house unexpected and even crawling through the doggy door). She had sex with him one last time, took the risque pics to try and seduce him into what she wanted one last time and when it wasnt enough still, she went through with the plan. She is coldblooded. Even after the victims family statement when they said they hope and pray he wasnt alive still when she sawed at his throat Jodi got right up and said 'I actually do remember he was still alive when his throat was cut' (not exact quote but the video is on here), she continued even after to assasinate his character on the stand and torment his family one last time with her statement.

I agree with you. Evil is a judgment of mortality. We don't use the word evil to describe someone's behavior in the mental health world. At least not in my experience. People can behave in so many ways unrelated to their diagnoses. They have feelings and desires independent of it. When I worked inpatient we would joke that "jerk" isn't a diagnosis. We call that acting out. People would wreck havoc for secondary gain.

I think there was more than just the gas cans that pointed at premeditation. Each point may just be a grain of sand, but together it’s a pile that would reasonably conclude premeditation. Gas Cans: she borrowed 2 and bought 1 more then lied about returning the extra 1. She normally used 2 on long trips, not three, so that is suspicious. Cellphone: she turned off her cellphone (or it died as she claims) before she got to Travis’ house and it didn’t turn back on until she was on the HWY to Ryan’s house. Rental Car & License Plate: she rented a car in a different city from where she lived and took off the license plate. (A cop testified to pulling her over because the license plate was upside down) Hair change: she went from blonde to brunette right before the trip. Gun: a .25 caliber gun was stolen from her grandmothers home days before Travis was killed, the same caliber he was shot with. Edit: typo

OMG21ization I think for some people it’s hard for them to reconcile in their minds that a woman, especially an attractive one, could commit an especially heinous murder without provocation. But obviously, women can be just as evil as men (#equality lol jk). I think they both played games, but it wasn’t anything out of the norm of the typical dysfunctional on-again-off-again relationships out there - at least on the surface & in the beginning. I agree he was too immature to settle down, and she went beyond the norm with the hacking into his emails, crazy texts, stalking - yikes. I did read about Travis’ upbringing & t was sad. But I think Jodi probably has a seductively charming personality, almost like a psychopath, so I think that’s a trap many men could have fallen into.

@@vanessaspeaks I was going to contribute along the lines that you did until I read your posts ! - the gas cans as well as her lie about returning one as well as switching off the phone definitely pointed to premeditation to avoid being traced to the area, removing the plates, the "stolen" gun - you have covered all the bases. She most likely encouraged him to take a shower on the pretence of taking photographs because he would have been naked, unguarded, nothing to reach for to defend himself and at his most vulnerable, otherwise he could have overpowered her. She claimed it was his idea whereas it came out from one of her many ex's that she encouraged him to do this also. This most likely proves premeditation. The sexual encounter between them also indicates premeditation in order to put him at ease. Don't forget he had emailed her shortly before saying she was a "sociopath" had conned him and treated him like a "dildo with a heartbeat" and what the prosecution said was "prophetic" the worst thing that ever happened to him. I have some experience of covert narcissists in particular and sex and charm as you suggest are one of their main weapons of manipulation. His email sparked a "narcissistic injury" where they are at their very most dangerous. It is very obvious the power she had over him even though he knew what she was. The on and off again is called "trauma bonding" - effectively he was addicted to her even knowing what she was and covert narcissists routinely reel back in old ex's and view them as their property. They also "project" and accuse the victims of their abuse of what they are doing and you heard plenty at trial of her accusing Travis of abuse and manipulation - they always tell on themselves- Incidentally the photo's she took of him and he of her she remembered to delete but were retrieved even after she put the thing in the wash. No one stabs someone - front and back over two dozen times, slash them in the throat and shoot them in the head in order to "defend" themselves.

No, she was on the fence while in bed with him. It was only when he said that he was going to take a vacation with Mimi when she asked him about his holiday plans that she then came to the conclusion that there was a zero percent chance of her getting married to him instead of the one percent chance that she was desperately clinging to. I think she thought that maybe if she was good enough in bed, she could convince him to dump Mimi and get married to her instead. But despite her best effort in bed that night, it wasn't good enough to change Trevor's mind. At that point, she lost all hope, and decided that the only way to end her involuntary torturous obsession would be to get rid of the object of her obsession. Then she wouldn't have to be tortured for the rest of her life with the thought of Mimi and Trevor canoodling with each other and not her (although I think she might have been willing to have a Sister Wives Fundamentalist Utah thing going on with Mimi, but unfortunately for Jodi, I'm guessing Travis only wanted to have a monogamous marriage, and not a plural marriage).

@Anarcho Frills Hmmm yeah, I won't argue because you're right about the conduct disorder thing I didn't think of that. Though one thing that strikes me as odd, is how calm she is in her interviews with TV networks, and how she was able to con and manipulate fellow inmates (one got tattooed by Jodi) so easily. I know everyone with BPD is not the same but I can't imagine a someone with BPD being so calm and clear headed in the face of getting life in prison and such. So much so that they are friendly with interviewers and able to so easily manipulate inmates. I would say if she has BPD she at least has more narcissistic traits than the average borderline as I would think those with NPD are more calm in the face of stuff like being accused of murder. Or I guess she's just like the one BPD woman super in control of how they outwardly express emotion.

@@laproserpina2620 the intense emotions of BPD would not have been present because she wasn't being abandoned by the reporter. Travis rejecting her, however, would have. BPD is about interpersonal relationships more than anything, so the closer and more emotionally dependent you get the worse the reaction. With strangers, there is no reason to feel that way, you're not being abandoned, they are just there to ask questions. If the reporter asked her a question like, "but, Travis made it clear he did not want you," she probably would have reacted much more strongly because it's triggering her to remember his rejection. Just giving another perspective about what you said. I think it's entirely possible she is this calm here, because she's trying to look good to the public. She would be thinking much more rationally than she would in a situation where someone she loves or feels she needs rejects her. The reporter is just some rando. Maybe she'd care if they didn't like her, because borderlines are very sensitive to criticism or not being liked, but it still would never bring out the reaction Travis saw, Travis was the object of her attention, her goal, and for her it probably felt like that goal was being crushed by him. I have borderline, BTW, and I've done a lot of research, so that's just my opinion, but I can see how that would work. I am not homicidal, never have been, but I've definitely been highly emotional and irrational over relationship issues that brought separation to the table. I could definitely see how seeing somebody for a long time and them playing with you would set someone who's already vulnerable to rejection off.

Thanks for taking the time to give this a good amount of thought Dr. Grande. I've spent a lot of time being and armchair detective in this case, and many other cases. You mentioned something very important here, depending on which side of the fence you're on depends on the appropriate label to stick on someone. I consistently see the same thing happen with whomever the victim might be in a case like this, where the victim is no longer there to be questioned. What I mean by this is that, the victim is portrayed as somewhat of an angel, there isn't a whole lot of 'dirt' brought up on them during the case/investigation. No, I'm not encouraging anyone to create a smear campaign or try to stick something on someone who is unfortunately dead, but it is important to know that there are two sides to every story, two peas in the pod. In this case in particular, if you spend enough time looking in to things you will realise that Travis was no angel, and could quite possibly have had some impact on the actions of Jodi. I'm by no means a Jodi 'white knight', she is an adult and is responsible for her actions. If you look at the Ezra McCandless case, you see a lot of the same 'legal' response/approach. The legal system leaves a lot of room for improvement, in particular the need for a more open book honest approach.

Exploited for sex? Like women can't enjoy sex in different forms. No no no, when it comes to bed, it's always a man, who gets pleasure and exploits poor women

Thank you for examining Jodia Arias. Her behaviour during the trial was quite chilling. One thing I'd like to ask is whether you could do a video addressing the difference between PTSD and BDP as quite a number of women who have been through traumatic events and developed PTSD were revealed to have been diagnosed - incorrectly - with BPD by professionals who were not aware of the trauma. Thanks again for another insightful analysis.

@@BILLY-LIAR idk, I'm not 100% convinced that she did it. Nothing about that case makes sense. Her husband divorced and remarried after 15 years standing by her. Their baby died at age 15 from some disease; sorry I can't remember exactly from what. Sad....
