Sex for Grades: undercover inside Nigerian and Ghanaian universities - BBC Africa Eye documentary

Universities in Nigeria and Ghana have been plagued by stories of sexual harassment by lecturers and professors for decades. Allegations include a wide array of abuses, from blackmailing students for sex in exchange for marks and admission to lewd comments and grooming.
After gathering dozens of testimonies, BBC Africa Eye sent undercover journalists posing as students inside the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the University of Ghana to capture footage of the sexual harassment.
Reporter Kiki Mordi, who knows first-hand how devastating sexual harassment can be, reveals what happens behind the closed doors of some of West Africa’s most prestigious universities.
Further information and support for anyone affected by sexual assault can be found through the BBC Action Line: bit.ly/2IyHETP

UPDATE: Following the sexual harassment allegations levelled against them in this #BBCAfricaEye investigation in 2019, the University of Lagos says it has approved the immediate dismissal of Dr. Boniface Igbeneghu and Dr. Samuel Oladipo on 31 May 2021.

Women from every generation have spoken up. Your generation isn't special. You have no idea what you're talking about. What do you think feminism is about or suffragette and how it all got started. This has been going on since time immemorial. It's not anything new. It's just that people are willing to prostitute themselves to reach higher heights and those that follow are indignant about the price to be paid to be successful because they saw the simplicity of it all and thought it was just a matter of participation without realizing how much participation was or would be required. Rot is everywhere in this system in every country and language. It's always being painted over with a new coat so the next generation can't see it. If you're an adult you have a story to tell about rot. But the system even goes so far as to threaten those with stories to tell. There's a brave women throughout history long before this new stock of historical victims. Parents should start telling their children the truth early on about what this life requires of them if they are to succeed. There are no angels down here.

I think tech advances have been very helpful to people facing covert manipulation and abuse. Having the ability to film covertly, call for back-up at any moment thanks to mobile phones or listening devices etc makes confrontation and evidence gathering less dangerous. The evidence is also much more reliable for prosecution and/or publication. Tech and the internet is amazing and has empowered us all!

How will you recognize victims of this situation, he or she will finish course work the first year but will never finish bench work or project 20 years after. There is also implied sexual harassment in which the lecturer will not actually say but expect it. So no playing ball, no graduating. People that got the job and not yet PhD holder are also victims during their masters an PhD schooling. It is a vicious cycle because they are bastardized too during their own schooling.

For that reason I know that English is the defacto language taught in school alongside Yoruba. They have great influences from British culture in most every aspect, so his use of the words "violent kiss" are intentional. He knows what he meant.

Just recently in an all boys school, found evidence of sexual assault in their locker room. They boys were set free, because of their 'remorse and guilt." I am extremely outraged by this, because these victims won''t even get to see justice in this world. You asked what you have to do with this. You have everything to do with this, with your power you can seek justice for everyone but you have to understand you have free will to do whatever you want. It clears the air and gives them the freedom and confidence to discuss academic issues. I feel sorry for these souls destroyed. My body shakes in anger and distress. I don't want to sound cruel or anything but situation in Africa may be lot different than in Buffallo NY. 1rst, for the reason social politic, some girl plan their way to seeing teaching so that they don't have to fail the class. So saying that they always force is not true. 2nd, African society consider woman as a second class citizen in society. For ex. You can find a typical family of 7 children with one boy. Due to lack of possibiliy, parent would prefere to put only son to school instead of girls, for the reason that is the only one to kip the family name. 3rd, corruption. Justice for those girls who may be violated is relying on how much money their parent are willing to put down in order to seek for reparation.

She is not traumatized, she was sent to do that, its acting. The one recording and the victim were sent to tempt the lecturer by asking him for good grades and those were his terms. There are people like that everywhere. A normal female student never approaches a lecturer with such requests. She just goes about her student duties and no lecturer can bring such requests to you, even when they do, you reject and there is nothing they can do about it because they dont know your index number to affect your grades.

@@caroljackson4093 I am definitely with you that this situation with the University professors making deals for sex is criminal. The University, and the State officials should all be held accountable for their part in fostering such an awful atmosphere at the College. They could easily remedy the conditions but they choose not to do so. The Professors each showed their devilish intentions without shame but yet they somehow have each been allowed to redefine their desires into something innocent and harmless. Their is no redaction that can justify what we've all now witnessed on this video. My hat's off and heart is sincerely with the millions of African women and women around the world that have suffered at the hands of others like these. I am as offended as any of you here in the comments. I only wish that the young women would have drafted a trusted School administrator in on the sting. THEN they could've smashed the button and the Professors would've been caught red-handed. Again, I am sorry to offend you all but the fact that these men were pigs doesn't mean that decent men aren't going to still try to get with y'all too. I'm single and I want a fine woman just like the next man does. Plus I really deserve one. Im appreciative of women, and I treat you all with the utmost respect. It makes you blame yourself for all those things when your abusers are the ones to be blamed. This was revelatory to the world because things like this are not meant to be talked about where we come from. They are just supposed to be kept in the shadows. I love the fact that BBC Africa is doing these kind of things to show the world the things that happen where we come from. Those perpetrators will definitely be revealed because no one deserves to be treated any less of a human being the way we are treated. Kiki Mordi was strong and courageous. I would say, videos like this one should be also aired WORLDWIDE @ Gutama ibrahim. I also would suggest that parents should discuss these matters to their children both boys & girls about these dangers & how to avoid them.

I was sexually harassed since the age of three, by neighbors, relatives, my friends' brothers...at one time in high school, I was almost raped by a doctor in his consultation room, I was sick and had gone to hospital. I've been harassed by men of God. I delayed graduating university by a whole year because lecturers who were harassing me "lost" my marks. This is such a shame.

The MOST annoying thing about this is that even with VIDEO AND AUDIO proof of their inappropriate and illegal behaviour, these men and their institutions still deny that this is a problem! Thank God for these women! I pray God will give us more of us the strength to continue to speak the truth for those who cannot

Never surrender! People are listening it and watching your pain and violence. Internet is one of the most powerful tools and let you show your situation to all people who are living on the world. Somebody will find it and decides to help you. The most saddest thing is when you are watching it and realise that you dont have enough power and money to change it and help victims. I can only suggest to find other universities and check their reputation. For example it can be good idea to go abroad and find a good university in Europe. European law is strict and teachers and lecturers for doing it will get permanent ban to perform their job. Addition information: In 2014 has been started Erasus+ program. People have been invited from african college in Ghana to visit european universities and Europeans to go to Africa. The target is to increase the cooperation between Africa and Europe.

Not all of them are victims. A lot of them propose sex for grades because they are too lazy to study. I know Nigerian women who even do this in London.

It was so unsettling when he was leading her in a prayer while thrusting his hips back and forth. 🤢 and the other prof Gyampo asking if she has ever been kissed violently before 🤮. Nasty men. They should not be teaching. These are predators.

This thing of pastors having sexual affairs with young girls is real in many places....they manipulate young girls using the name of God! I know of an incident where a pastor groomed and manipulated a young girl, until he sexually harassed her and she was so helpless until one day she got justice
