Thank you for making a point of how hard it actually is to sew knits. I just started sewing I mean I do have the normal amount of sewing experience for a swede but after that i sewn almost nothing. An darn it is not that easy and I have decided that i will use and be proud of the things I make anyways :-)

Yes necklines can grow so quickly, so sometimes we need to keep them in check! I prefer using a narrow zigzag stitch for this purpose since it keeps some stretch when working with knits

Interesting to see what others do in sewing. I use a bias tape for shoulder stabilization, then fold it over and top stitch it down. I prefer this to clear elastic. Often my knit tops have facings instead of ribbing at the neckline. I find stay stitching right after cutting to be a big help. My way is a bit more formal looking and is easily accepted as proffesional wear. If I do ribbing at the top, I then double needle stitch necklibe to secure it. Sleeve heming really depends on which fabric I use. Silk or wool jersey knits are blind hemmed. Cotton is double needle stitched. Works well.

I ve seen woven ribbons sewn in the shoulder seam,in some expensive T-shirts, usually in mens wear. If I am lazy I go for the all trendy lettuce hem.

It feels like it needs to be more stable but my partner feels the clear elastic down the front and back of T-shirt .please help he really loved all three of them without the elastic. Do you have any tips (or maybe a video I missed) on knit neckbands when you're not using rib? I'm using fabric without a lot of stretch, so I'm wondering if I should cut my neckband on the bias.

I’ve got the books and USE THEM. if you are considering purchasing them , I recommend them. I’ve made countless athletic wear using these books.

Agree regarding imperfections in "professionally"-made garments. Bought a t-shirt once that had a very pronounced tunneling on all hems. It was more of a bevel rather than a proper cover stitch. The fabric was a soft cotton/polyester blend that I did not see that brand use previously. Perhaps their machinery was not properly setup to handle the material.

Hi Johanna,I recently discovered your channel and just got your Sewing Activewear book. It's been very helpful in learning some extra techniques; however, it would be helpful to see step-by-step videos of you sewing. On another note, I have used satin tape to stabilize shoulders. The only issue is that when I sew to attach the sleeves and neckline, my machine has trouble going over the bulk. I'll try using the mallet, like you suggested. Also, I've noticed some t-shirts have a piece of the same knit as a stabilizer sewn across the back of the neckline all the way to the edge of the shoulders. I find that this gives the t-shirt a nice finishing inside. Would you be able to show how this is done? Many thanks for all your videos!

Hi! Thank you for getting my book! After I finish my jeans sewing book I plan to write a book about sewing t-shirts and other knit tops, and hopefully, I will be able to replicate the method you are asking about in the book (it's originally done using an industrial machine using a special binder). I really like it too!

I didn't understand how you calculate the neck ribbing when using the two measurements of the front and back neckline. Can you give an example from a garment you made?

Sage Preaumx She uses the two measurements of the front and back neckline to figure out how much to stretch the ribbing. Let’s say neckline circumference is 100, shoulder to mid front is 30 (or 30% of total circumference), and shoulder to mid back is 20 (or 20% of total). Ribbing length is 75% of neckline circumference, which makes it 75 in this example. Then she takes the percentages of the neckline and applies them to the ribbing. Thus, from shoulder to mid front, the ribbing should be 22.5 (30% of 75) and shoulder to mid back, it should be 15 (20% of 75). Does that make sense?

Thank you Lorem for explaining it so well! Yes Sage, A shoulder to mid front distance of 10 cm on the bodice neckline would be 7.5 cm on the ribbing, and then we stretch out the ribbing to match the notches on the mid front and ribbing!

Would you need to stabilize if you’re just sewing the seam of a tank top sleeve?

I'm having trouble finding where yo buy clear elastic. I live in the US. Is there another name for it? Thank you 😊!!

I found it listed on Joanns site as stay tape and on ebay as clear stretch elastic. Good luck

Clear elastic, around 1/4" wide 👍

Dear Johanna, I love your videos - so helpful. However I disagree with ironing the shoulder seam towards the back - all that achieves is that you will see the shadow of the seam from the front. It is just as easy to stabilize the shoulder seam from the front, and turn it to the front afterwards. This way, all you see from the front is a smooth line, and the shadow of the seam is only visible from the back.

Oh for sure, both totally works and as you say the back fold creates a visible shadow. That said, I have noticed that on RTW made knit tops they are almost always pressed backwards and I'm pretty sure there is a reason for that. Maybe it makes sleeve insertion easier?

I press to the back, I find the front will lie better with bulk of the seam sitting at the highest point. Bit I do spend time cutting for this.

Yes for a raglan it would be overkill and add discomfort and bulk to stabilise the shoulder seams, the method I talk about is only used for classic shoulder seam t-shirts. Do you have a serger? Try experimenting with the differential feed to make sure both layers are kept in check. Also do samples with one fabric on top and the other one underneath, and then switch and sew the other fabric on top, to see if this also makes a difference for the feeding
