I love that you are using an older machine. Sewing is an expensive hobby if you find yourself contracting "gear acquisition syndrome" 😁. I got an old 1970's machine from my mother-in-law and it does much better with all stretch fabrics than my machine that's only 5 years old.

I’ve recently realized that I don’t actually love the sewing part of sewing! Which is why I have spent as much as I could possibly afford on my sewing machine and overlocker/coverstitch machines. Your video is so helpful for people who aren’t willing to or just can’t part with large amounts of money on their machines.

Thank you! Yes I try to be mindful of all the restrictions we are facing when deciding on an investment or not, because just as you say, it can be a hefty investment to buy good quality machines. But yes, it does make a huge difference when it comes to the overall sewing experience!

The Bernina machine you have is wonderful and likely just as good if not bette than the newer ones! Good choice.

For me a serger is a must-have machine. Not only for sewing knits - it overlocks each and every edge of EVERY piece of clothing that I sew. It's irreplaceable. I'd rather buy a simple mechanical sewing machine and a serger than invest in one fancy, computerized domestic sewing machine.

I'm of the same mind, once we discover the amazing possibilities with the serger (and the speed of sewing) there really is no turning back imho!

I just read your book ,Master the cover stitch machine, from cover to cover and really enjoyed it. I have an Imagine serger as well as a sewing machine and have wondered for a while if I need to invest in the cover stitch machine. After reading your book I think that will be will be my next purchase. Thanks so much for all your good advise!

Thank you so much for using my book as your guide in your decision. Albeit a big investment, the coverstitch just makes sewing, and especially hemming, so much easier and nicer looking too, so it really is a great companion to our other sewing machines!

I'm terrible with knits. Mostly because I don't have enough patience. Your tips are very helpful. This is a great catch up and reference post. Thanks!

If I can give you some encouragement it really is about getting over that initial hurdle and develop a feel and understanding, after that it can often be a breeze!

I thank you for tips! my space is such I usually move machines around. when. I don't want to I tried the wonder tape and fusible (separate garments) and my hems looked smooth and professional. thank you!

I sew a lot of knits and have both a serger and a coverstitch. I couldn’t do without either! 😁😁👍

I followed the link for the wash away tape, which looks very useful. The link took me to a listing which charges £61.85 for a roll of the tape. If you do your own search for the tape on Amazon - you will see the TRUE PRICE is UNDER £10 !! Naughty sellers! Informative video though.

Fantastic video with lots of tips, ideas and links. Thank you. I just bought your Coverstitch book and a terrific used Janome Combo Machine (overlocker/cover stitch) that is in top notch condition. My overlocker has been used on every garment (knit & woven) that has been made in my household in the past 23 years and couldn't think about sewing without one. There is a terrific book on using an overlocker called 'The Overlocker Technique Manual' by Julia Hincks for those who are beginners. An overlocker is worth the investment. I predominantly sew woven material garments, but, about to give knitwear more of a focus.

Hi. Firstly I love your videos. I actually bought your book, then discovered your KZread channel. I just got my first serger , the Gloria by babylock. All this stuff is new to me, sewing with knits. I have a question, I used the plastic stabiliser tape in the shoulder of the tee shirt I made. You mentioned wonder tape. But it is water soluble. Doesn’t that defeat its purpose if it dissolves.? I don’t understand. Sewing with the babylock serger is amazing. It takes longer to cut out the tee shirt pattern than to sew the thing together. So amazed, so happy., excellent results. And switching from coverstitch to serger is a breeze.

Hi Cheryl! Thank you so much for getting my book! Regarding your question, I don't recommend the wonder tape for stabilising the shoulder seams if that's what you are asking.. I was referring to using it temporarily stabilise parts of the fabric when using a regular sewing machine for instance. For instances, if you want to add a collar, sew a placket, control tricky hems or add cuffs, the wonder tape is amazing for those purposes. I should have made that clearer!

for the twin needle I only see 90(11) stretch needles but for the project im doing requires 90 (14) is that fine or could something go wrong?

My 1st knit was a pair of leggings and I had a difficult time with it. I used lycra fabric used for swimsuits! I wanted to cry because although I had the twin needle, walking foot and was using a zig zag stitch my machine was eating the fabric ever chance it got! I choose fabric that I was not ready for. I think I just picked the wrong fabric to use. This had way more stretch and I needed to take in the inseam another inch before they were not loose on me.

Have you tried actually stitching a stretch garment on a coverstitch machine? I've done it on 2 garments where I wanted a flat seam. The first was a quite bulky knitted fabric, and the second for a stretch skirt. I'm happy with the results, but not seen any information of anyone else doing it,

Hi! I have tried, but have not made an entire garment. I've seen it mentioned in Facebook groups but not anywhere else. I've found it to works well on stable knits (I basted first), but I have not been successful on stretchy knits

I first tried it on a very loosely woven linen knit, it was a thick fabric but quite stretchy and ravelly and it looked better with flat seams. I serged the edges to stop ravelling. The skirt I've just made is a stable woven with stretch and I wanted to maintain the stretch of the fabric. I've previously used the lightening stitch on my regular sewing machine but when I needed to unpick it was a nightmare. This fabric does not fray. I stopped the chain stitch unraveling by stitching a few stitches over the end of the chain from my regular sewing machine where necessary.

That was a dense bit of info. Whaw! 💕 It is clear how enthusiastic you are about this topic. You had me laughing 😆 It is fine to breath 😉 Gives us a chance to keep up with all the valuable info you’re sharing. Personally I have never even used a serger, let alone a coverstich machine. Have invested in an expensive sewing machine, that performs suprisingly well with knits. Have been sewing swimwear fabric and also hemming fine knitwear without any issues. So no immediate need for a second machine. At least for now. Lack of space in our small apartment also plays a role.

Yeah, lol, I have A LOT to say on this topic 😁 . Good to hear that your sewing machine is great with knits, it is indeed a hefty and space consuming investment to expand to sergers and coverstitch machines.

can I sew on Knit fabric from a REGULAR PATTERN.PATTERN IS SIMPLE STRAIGHT LINES WITH ONE DART AT THE BUST.

Unfortunately i don't understand much english, i'm using google translator .... there is a machine that makes the overlock point and galoneira on a single machine, thanks in advance

I bought a Janome Airthread 2000D serger not knowing I can’t do the cover stitch. Close to 2,000$ Wish I saw this video first.
