    I've rescued cats for 35 years... A cat with mats in the sanitary area have to be removed. Anyone saying that matted area was salvageable is ridiculous. Take the mats out, clean him and have a vet check for infection.

    The owners asked for the cat to be shaved all over. That cat is obese. It cannot reach certain parts of its body because of its weight. That means that the fur in those areas will eventually get matted just like it was before in the sanitary area. If the owners won't keep their cat's weight under control, then it'd be a mercy to shave the cat to prevent those problems before they can begin.

    @@saturnstar5603 your assuming that the owners are not trying. My cat is fat and I have been trying for years to help her lose weight WITH her vet. See my replies to other comments. I've received a couple of ideas I haven't tried before, since changing food and toys have done nothing for her. Please dont judge as you might not know the reasons why the cat is fat. It could be as simple as genetics. Perhaps you can offer good ideas on how to deal with cats weight issues? Thank you!

    This can is an older cat. If you teach your cat from a young age how to be properly handled and groomed this would have never happened. This is the outcome of years of not proper upkeep. I have a cat that is fine with his belly and paws being touched because I taught him early that he is safe. Just like dogs you need to train your cat that grooming is safe. You shouldn’t have to shave your long haired cat.

  • @dalekcat

    @dalekcat

    That cat was actually super chill throughout the shave down so I'm not too sure on that particular cat becoming aggressive when getting brushed HOWEVER 1 thing is shaving does not necessarily help animals cool down; only if it's an indoor only pet. The fur traps body heat and keeps outside air out so even if they are a bit hot when it's hot the fur keeps the heat off their actual skin and they feel colder during night when the outside temps cool down. doubt you're seeing this considering it's been a couple years since your comment.

Even they are both short-hairs, we started brushing them within a week, even if only for a minute or two to get them used to it and now they come running when we bring the brush out. I also started rubbing their feet, so they will be used it when I get ready to trim their nails.

    Every cat I’ve had has been on dry food, totally free range and never been obese. Now granted they do get bigger in the winter but never so over weight they can’t groom themselves. If they aren’t on a strict feeding schedule, which ours weren’t due to them being home alone during the day, you can’t just give them a huge bowl full. They can survive until you get home at the end of the day. And you have to promote play from when they’re young. Cats need to play and run around to stimulate their minds and keep them fit.

    Personally I don't think someone should have to be educated on this. You have hair and you take care of it don't you? You have to wash it or it gums up, brush it or it'll mat. It's going to be the same with most animals, especially if they're so big they can't clean themselves. My dog is really obese, she has been that way since she was spayed. I made the mistake of feeding her the way I had been feeding her before and she blew up, anyway, she couldn't clean herself! She could barely reach her genitals! So I decreased her food (did not help her lose weight btw) and I wiped her butt for her. Those seem like basic hygiene things to me.

    Dede, I had two cat sisters from a lady neighbor who kept the mother and one kitten when she found the half wild mom cat had 5 kittens under the neighbors back deck. The mom short hair cat was mostly white with large grey patches on the head and body just like one of the kittens I took (we named Daisy) and the father must have been a long hair grey Persian as the other kitten I took (we named it Muffy) had long grey hair all over. We couldn't make up our mind over those last two so we ended up with BOTH lol. Of course we waited til they were 8 - 8 1/2 weeks old. We had them for 25 years. Long haired Muffy had very long furry "pants" and would stretch her neck and wiggle her head and tongue to get to the end of the long hairs on her "pants". She cleaned her long grey fur just like you described! Once I had to get parts of Muffy dematted (the back and underarms) at the vet, but she kept her private area very clean! The last 3 years we had to give them 2 SQ's (subcutaneous fluids) twice a day til we felt it was time. They were still very happy and played and ate well but were slowly heading for ill health that would have been too difficult for them. They were such wonderful and quirky cats that we loved so much. Muffy was such a tomboy and would thump across the carpet and Daisy was SUCH a princess and walk with a delicate feminine sway lol. Daisy would always sleep at our feet but Muffy would squeeze in between my husband and I by our knees under the blanket, stretch out and go to sleep. It was like a furry knee warmer at knight. Daisy would watch the birds out the window with her tail swishing like crazy and Muffy would look out the window and chirp at the birds! Muffy would hog any sunny place and Daisy would give up the sunny spot with a delicate shrug of her shoulders and lay nearby with one paw still in the sunny patch.

    Cats usually don't need a bath if they can groom themselves. Only elderly, sick, or disabled cats need a bath.... so any cat that has mobility issues and lack of energy for grooming might need some help. I have owned several cats, short and long haired. Only one of the long haired cats needed regular shave downs when he got elderly and started to have issues related to his age and breed. He was no fan or regular brushing... he wouldn't even let us pet him as he got older and his body started to ache... so shave down was the shortest and easiest solution without torturing that poor old cat for too long or too often.

    This boy did amazing in such a stressful situation. You did amazing with him! I have two cats and they need grooming just as much as any dogs, especially with the longer furred breeds. It's essential to their health to be able to clean themselves. My cat has a little skin tag on her butt which means when she poops, some of the poop gets stuck on her butt and gets rock hard and then tears her skin when she tries to get it off. I've spent many an hour with my face basically in her butt to try and soften the poop enough for removal. It's not a pretty job but it's all a part of taking care of them, when we aqquire a pet, they're our responsibility. Thank you so much on behalf of the cat parents! 💜

    Lauren Haggerty I say this in the spirit of being helpful. Check with your vet about getting the skintag removed. I know that he will tell you it is not a health issue. But, in this case it may cause a health issue if he cannot clean himself. It would certainly make your life easier and it's not difficult. I'll bet kitty would be happier if he did not have to endure those manual cleanings too. Best of luck.

    I have to say I’ve watched a lot of cat, dog videos and yours is far the best and most humane. I’ve watched others that yell at the animals, grab at the animals and complain about the smell. I feel sorry for the animal because it’s not the animals fault. Some groomers seems to not have any idea or tact concerning the owners. I think it’s amazing that you allow the owners to see the process and the explanations you provide. Thank you!

    The mom is. Very frustrating. To me "dont get the. Quick"ok first off. If. You would keep him trimed and clean as well as on the proper diet. The cat wouldnt be as bad as he was. Also. Dont tell the professionals. What to do or whether or not to get. Something when the professional has done the. Job for over. 15 years.

    Such a well - behaved baby what a trooper🤗😇😍! Awesome job as always Dede and kudos to bringing up the fact that diet can play a role in his skin & coat health and for also pointing out to Dad the skin irritation on his man bits that was not caused by you, but by the mat🤓👌👍!
