The UK, Europeans n USA can go anywhere and claim any island or land occupied by natives or not but China cannot claim a few reefs which it historically has occupied. On January 17, in the year 1893, the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi was illegally overthrown. The following remembrance recorded by Johanna Wilcox speaks of the overwhelming sadness felt by the population after the overthrow and annexation of Hawaiʻi to the United States of America. The Spratlys and the Paracels were conquered by Japan in 1939. Japan annexed the Spratly Islands via Taiwanese jurisdiction as part of Kaohsiung on 30 March 1939. France[82] and UK protested and reasserted French soveregnty.[83] In 1946, the Americans reminded the Philippines at its independence that the Spratlys was not Philippine territory, both to not anger Chiang Kai-shek in China and because the Spratlys were not part of the Philippines per the 1898 treaty Spain signed with America.[

The news on recent Japan -- ASEAN summit SEAsian nations want economic cooperation more than military links. Japan no longer enjoys the same clout in the fast-growing region also courted by the U.S. and 中国 Asean's 10 nations will overtake Japan's GDP very soon ( Nikkei economic magazine , IMF projections ) SEAsians on track to soon overtake Japan economically as the two sides prepare to celebrate 50 years of friendship at a summit in Tokyo starting Dec. 16. ....Experts fear it would be extremely difficult for Japan to maintain the existing international order should the region fall under China’s sphere of influence. ....it will be very difficult for Tokyo to pull the entire bloc closer to the Western-aligned world. USA mantra is : "if you are not with us, you are against us." ; Can not be tomatoes , must be either Apples or Oranges Asean nations do not adopt the idiotic western principles of not recognizing neutrality, "my enemy is your enemy" "my wars are your wars" That has been the mindset/worldview of the west; and it is pathetically and pathologically ignorant and arrogant if not a mental disorder. Today no Asian security partner wants to choose between America and China. ASEAN cannot be repurposed to form a coalition to counter China. Thus, no claimant against China in the South China Sea is prepared to join the US in its naval fracas with China. China has resources, including money, to offer its partners, whereas, the US budget is in chronic deficit and even routine government operations must now be funded with debt. It needs to find resources needed to keep its human and physical infrastructure at levels competitive with those of China and other great economic powers

@@dtbhkoh6575 Do you think it was the United States that stopped communism in Southeast Asia? What an irony. In fact, it was the CCP that ignited communism in Southeast Asia, and it was also the CCP that prevented communism in Southeast Asia. To be more precise, it was Deng Xiaoping listened to Lee Kuan Yew and stopped communism. Since 1946, the world has fallen into the Cold War with extreme ideological hostile two side. The United States was in the period of McCarthyism at that time, and adopted a hostile policy towards communist regimes around the world. The United States aided the anti-communist Kuomintang in the Chinese Civil War, but in 1949 Mao Zedong drove ROC away to Taiwan, North Korea tried to unify South Korea by force in 1950, which caused the United Nations troops to approach the Chinese border. The U.S. Navy prevented the CCP from crossing the sea to pursue the Kuomintang. Mao Zedong went to the Korean War to fight against the United States. The United States opened a bamboo curtain against the CCP, and Mao Zedong began to exported the communist revolution to whole world, especially supporting the communists in Indochina like Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. France wanted to return to its colonial rule in French Indochina, and the United States needed to contain Communist China. Therefore, the West spent 30 years to contain communism and supported anti-communist regimes, colonial regimes, military junta regimes, and right-wing dictatorships in Southeast Asia, and Mao Zedong intervened in the proxy wars against West in Southeast Asia. CCP confronted against France in the First Indochina War, CCP also confronted against the United States in the Second Indochina War. finally France and the United States both failed. However, since the split between China and the Soviet Union in 1959, China and the Soviet Union began to compete for the right to interpret ideology and the leadership of the socialist world and Asia. In 1969, China and the Soviet Union had a serious conflict on the border, and China and the Soviet Union fell into a nuclear crisis. Kissinger seized the opportunity and asked Nixon to embrace Mao Zedong. From then on, the CCP regarded the Soviet Union as a greater threat. After reunification, Vietnam became pro-Soviet and anti-China, and the Khmer Rouge became pro-China and anti-Vietnam. At this time, Deng Xiaoping abandoned his far-left economic policies and embraced pro-American, liberal policies. Then Deng Xiaoping attacked pro-Soviet Vietnam and supported the Khmer Rouge to fight Vietnam. Eventually, Vietnam withdrew from Cambodia and Laos. Therefore, without Deng Xiaoping, Vietnam would have long since unified the Vietnamese Indochina Peninsula.

China is South East Asians neighbors. We have lived with China for thousands of years, long long before USA was created. We have issues with China in the Siuth China Sea but overall we are not hatmed by China and understand 'outside forces' wants to contain China, these outside forces goes n tries to persuade our leaders to allow more military bases to be aimed at China. Most of us who reads a bit of history still remembers the millions of deaths caused by USA in Philippines n Vietnam, our neighbors. We also know USA was established by the genocidal killings of hundreds of indigenous indians, how USA invaded, assassinated leaders, overthrew many of its Southern neighbors. So it is hundreds of US bases with missiles aimed at China that is fueling a dangerous war in this region that frightens me. About 90% of shipping trade routes in this sea is used or benefits China snd it is its lifeline so it is illogical for China to harm itself.

To keep the peace in the South China Sea, ASEAN needs to stay neutral in the U.S.-China rivalry. The overlapping claims to the SCS can be frozen, and joint exploration of its resources can be negotiated among various claimants. // China is claiming the sea encompassed by the so-called nine-dash line, the same area is claimed by Taiwan!! Vietnam also claims a big area and occupies most of the islands in the SCS. But only China gets criticized by the western media for its claim. Did the U.S. not recognized China's claim in 1947 when China was still under the Kuomintang? There's no evidence that China has militarized the islands it occupies. Yet, the media keeps on trumpeting on the "China threat".

I'm from Taiwan, and here's just a few cents of historic truth! It was actually the Republic of China, with the help of the US NAVY, claims the 11 (not 9) dash-line islands of South China Sea! After Japan lost, this was some arbitration deal made between the US, ROC and Japan! Plus, Tau Yu Dao island was also offered by the US to ROC, unfortunately Chiang Kai Shek refused! With the islands too far from Taiwan, it's hard to manage, so both Philippines and Vietnam took over some islands. When China took over the 11 dash-line claims, they did not pursue the lost islands and changed it to the 9 dash-line! Check history and you'll see, unlike the West, China never occupies other country's land, but will also won't lose a mm of it's own land to anyone! Both the Vietnam and India wars clearly proofs this! If China followed the West, then today Vietnam would be half it's present size, and India's border to China will be New Delhi!

Kishore , you failed to mention the historical reasons why China claims the South Asia Sea island..At first sight it is unreasonable why China shall claim these uninhabited islands which are thousands of km away from China while the neighbouring countries are closer ( a few hundreds km from land). China was a very powerful country hundreds of years ago while these neighboring countries were still very primitive. There is a genuine need for China to protect it's trading route in the South China sea. Instead of occupying a few ports and colonies in these countries like what the British, Dutch or American had done, China just claims the inhabited islands in the sea with eleven dotted lines. This is agreed for hundreds of years by most countries including America, Britain, UN and neighbouring countries. That is why these islands are returned to China after WWII from the Japan according to UN mandate. Of course China after 1949 was weak and cannot occupy it immediately. Now the America and it's gang is stirring up the neighbouring countries to claim these Chinese territories. Know the history and the story behind ,prepare for the consequences if you ignore it.

I am very thankful for Kishore's lecture. He has sometimes been associated with being pro-China and anti-US. He's neither. Watching his videos, all he wants is to have peace between China and US (and with India and Europe too). Many comentors say that Kishore is doing it in the interest of Singapore. It's definitely more than that. Singapore's neutrality in the US-China tension is not just for Singapore or Asean but the world. A divided world stands no chance against the threats of climate change, AI and nuclear annihilation. The world is big enough for US, China (as well as India and Europe) to have to prosper together in peace. As the famous Jeffrey Sachs say, the beauty of economics is that it's a positive sum game and all nations can prosper together. The narrative of mainstream media that it's US vs China is a problematic one, a power play which is a zero-sum game. That's what Kishore sets out to disprove that narrative. Singapore is proud to produce thinkers like Kishore and George Yeo who are brave and intelligent enough to withstand the pressure of mainstream media. In fact, Singapore, with Asean, should be more assertive on the world stage in its neutrality stand and the principles behind it. Humanity needs a united world to survive. With Kishore's help, let's all play our part.

Prof Mahbubani is right that ASEAN can play a vital role in keeping the US-China geo-political conflict out of South East Asia. The US understands this, so they've spent a huge effort to entice ASEAN member states to take sides (remember the intense flurry of visits from Blinken, Austin, Kamala Harris, and others to S.E.A last year, and that's just the tip of the iceberg). By most accounts those proved fruitless. The US worked especially hard on Vietnam, who last fought a border war with China in '79 (no doubt assuming there's lingering hatred on the part of the Vietnamese). But from recent mutual visits between the Chinese and Vietnamese Leaders, relations between China and Vietname has never been better. Ths US failed to stir anomosity once more. They have 2 cards left to play, Taiwan and, sadly, The Philippines. Taiwan is another story with a whole different dynamic, so we can leave that aside. The Philippines, a founding member of ASEAN, is now the frontline agitator in the SCS. Some may argue The Philippines is simply defending its sovereign territory. This is a shallow and undoubtedly, Western peddled narrative. There's no doubt there're territorial disputes between al the claimant nations. But the SCS Code-of-Conduct was the agreed mechanism to resolve these matters. Under President Duterte, these issues did not cause friction betweenBeijing and Manila. In fact, when BongBong Marcos took office in Jan'23, his FIRST State visit was to Beijing. He received a warm welcome, and secured investment deals betwee the 2 countries. Barely 3 mths later, guess what, Marcos did a 180. It was full-on confrontation with SCS as the singular issue. That speaks volumes. ASEAN had forgotten, among its member states, there is a US-vassal state called The Philippines. This may now be tinder to spark a shooting war in the SCS. I assure you, the US wouldn't mind one, even if it also hits their trade. Their calculation is that it will hit China way harder (70-80% of Chinese imports come through the SCS). ASEAN will be collateral damage.

Which for many in Singapore is very hard to believe because we have become prisoners of the Anglo-Saxon media. So, we cannot accept the fact that sometimes they are telling outright lies on some issues. And so, especially when it comes to the south china sea, you must learn to be very wary of all the facts.

Today, Greece controls 95% of the islands and exclusive economic zone in the Aegean Sea but not whole water, while Turkey only controls 5% islands. Is this very similar to what the Chinese claim? Isn’t it unfair that the Turkish fleet may break into Greek EEZ when they just leave the port? Yes, it's very unfair but Greece was in the winner side in the First Balkan War, World War I, and World War II. At the end of World War II, the ROC Kuomingtang regime claimed some islands in South China Sea as Chinese traditional fishing areas in 1945, the West and the Soviet Union asked their biggest ally in Asia, the ROC to take over the military control of South China Sea after Japanese troops withdrew from the South China Sea. Ironically the US navy even lent 8 warships to the Chinese, then the 4 ROC navy warships landed on Taiping Island, Thitu Island, Triton Island, Woody Island and set up stone tablets in 1946, then the ROC Kuomingtang regime drew 11-dash line. Today, the pro-West, anti-communist democratic ROC Taiwan still claims 11-dash line since 1945 until today, Taiwan still controls Taiping island and Dongsha island, but Thitu Island was lost to the Philippines due to storm in 1971, Taiwan navy wanted to take back but canceled military retaliation operation against the Philippines under pressure from the United States, but the ROC Taiwan did not give up the claim on Thitu island until today. PRC Beijing just inherited same 11-dash line claim from the ROC after Chinese Civil War 1949, but PRC changed from 11-dash line to 9-dash line after Mao Zedong gave Bach Long Vi island as gift to Ho Chi Minh for monitoring US reconnaissance aircraft in 1957, ironically the North Vietnam used to support PRC's claim on Paracel and Spratly but the Viet Cong under Le Duan became pro-Soviet anti-Chinese, unified Vietnam started to claim same like the South Vietnam regime after reunification 1975 and caused Sino-Vietnamese Conflicts, more ironically the Viet Cong has become pro-American today, I think the CCP must regret to Bach Long Vi gift, maybe the CCP will restore the 11-dash line and take back Bach Long Vi if Viet Cong became another S.Vietnam. So why international community let Chinese to control South China Sea after WWII? When Chinese claimed the South China Sea islands in 1945, British Malaya, American Philippines, French Vietnam, Dutch Indonesia, all Southeast Asian countries were Western colonies in 1945. Therefore, when the West masters gave the South China Sea as a gift to the best friend the ROC Kuomingtang, the Southeast Asians as slaves couldn't and didn't oppose ROC's 11-dash line claim. International practice is that whoever claims or occupies uninhabited island first, if no countries really objects, then this is whose territory, or you can get territory through treaty after war. The document given by the Chinese is that in the Sino-Japanese Peace Treaty, Japan gave up Taiwan, Penghu, the Spratly Islands and the Paracel Islands to ROC, Today Taiwan still possesses the original copy of that treaty. So why did the United States gave the South China Sea to ally Chinese instead of the ally Filipino? Because The post-war order is always decided by the winners according to contributions during the war, usually the big contributors can distribute the spoils, because ROC suffered tens of millions of casualties, KMT/CCP wiped out more Japanese than all of Southeast Asia combined, the Chinese persisted against Japan until fascist surrendered in 1945, but all Southeast Asians and Western colonial troops didn't resist long enough but surrendered to Japan in 1942 in Southeast Asia. Therefore, the ROC is the only independent country in Asia that made the greatest contribution until the end of World War II. That’s why the international community has acquiesced in ROC's claims to the South China Sea, The ROC used tens of thousands of tons of bloodshed to obtain Taiwan, Manchukuo, and the 11-dash line. If you don't pay more cost, do you just want to use propaganda war to force the Chinese to give up? Of course you have to sacrifice more to rewrite new world order.
