[Lecture] Has the West Lost it? by Prof Kishore Mahbubani

The West's centuries-old status as the centre of global wealth and power is coming to an end. As the new powers - China and India from Asia and others from Africa and Latin America - rise to the top of the world's pecking order, how should the West react? Kishore Mahbubani argues passionately and provocatively that the West can no longer impose its power and ideals on the world at large, and - paradoxically - that only by admitting its decline can the West set itself up for strategic success in the long term. Mahbubani examines the myths and self-delusions of Western power with an outsider's critical eye, and the shocking freshness of his geopolitical analysis will give all Westerners and political thinkers pause for thought.
================================================
Prof Kishore Mahbubani is Senior Advisor (University & Global Relations) and Professor in the Practice of Policy National University of Singapore. He is also the founding Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.
This event is moderated by Prof. Danny Quah, Dean and Li Ka Shing Professor in Economics at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.

I am a Dutchman of 70 living in France and I agree for 100% with Mahbubani Kishore: Western intellectuals are arrogant. I would say VERY arrogant! When there are discussions, lectures about China, India, Arab or African countries on western TV channels, there are "rarely" intellectuals/experts from these countries. The average western man or woman, but also leading intellectuals, have no idea of the geopolitical and demographic changes taking place. Many still have the mindset from The Cold War, for when they talk about modern Russia, they refer to that country in Cold War rhetoric. Even so called bright intellectuals have never heard of the late Lee Kuan Yew, Deng Xiaoping or BRICS or The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation or even the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and so on!

In addition we accidentally discovered more hydrocarbons then god. We don't need the rest of the world anymore. But we have plenty of nice clean LNG available at reasonable costs…. But China realy realy hates Japan and we still have treaties with Japan. If those two get themselves into a face off in that over faced neck of the woods it could really really piss us off. The first caucasian western student posed a typical western question about China on "Human Rights." Obviously he thinks about voting and freedom of expression. But.....lifting 800.000.000 people out of poverty within 40 years, is not that the greatest achievement of "Chinese Human Rights?" Show me one country or group of countries, that ever achieved this? So it is not a coincidence the second white western student was asking a similar question about China's "foul play."

@@funbigly China learned a lot from Singapore when Deng Xiaoping first visited Singapore. He decided to open up China and gave the most understandable explanation of Pragmatism: It doesn't matter if it is a black cat or a white cat, it's a good cat if it can catch the rat. We Chinese don't live by ideology like a bible, and we think the road that leads us forward would never change. Deng Xiaoping also contributed "touch the rock to cross the river", meaning experiments in policies are very important when you make decisions. Thanks to a lot of western ideas, we developed so fast, especially after joining WTO, and we don't deny that. Without foreign investment, we could not have achieved so much. In China, people don't go left or right, we consider if something is suitable for the current situation and if it brings benefits to us. I hope you also learned something new today.

I cannot concur to the saying that China entry into WTO in year 2001 was a strategic mistake by the West in not giving attention. This notion is short of saying that you committed a mistake by not noticing the improvement of livelihood of your neighbour, short of saying that the rise of your neighbour threathen you in all aspects if you let it happened The rules of game in WTO were of American making... China or India rise was owing to their people's hard work, they owe nobody a living and owe no one an obligations to say sorry.

I don’t believe the speaker meant to assert that the US should’ve tried to stop China from entering the WTO. His point-as I understood it-was that the US should’ve been paying more attention to China and other emerging economies during the early 2000s. The US should’ve anticipated the massive impact that China’s growth would have on the American economy and job market. The West was blinded by hubris. By the time we woke up to our new reality, Western corporations had already moved thousands of jobs overseas to take advantage of the new low-cost, loosely-regulated labor markets. Western countries could’ve acted preemptively by passed laws or tax incentives to prevent corporations from outsourcing labor, but they didn’t noticed what was happening until it was already too late. Or at least that’s the message I took away :)

A quote from the Three Kingdoms which every Chinese has watched on TV, one of the four major literature classics of China, states: "He who wins the hearts of men will rule the world." The same applies in the 21st century, where the internet makes information dissemination global. My bet is on China because integrity and benevolence (a prequisite Confucian value for any government officials) will always triumph over hypocrisy and aggression as practised by USA. China's foreign policy is win-win. USA's foreign policy is "if you are not with me, then you are against me" A zero sum game mentality. If USA wins, people around the world will get the status quo, a world full of sufferings in many parts of the world. If China wins, there will be peace and harmony around the world, a better world. A global Singapore, so to speak, where people of different cultures and religions can live in a thriving society. USA rules by divide and rule, hence the constant wars and the global humanitarian crisis that follows, caused mainly by the West. China rules by uniting the world, hence the BRI, allowing global cultures to live in harmony. To live and let live. Finally, zero wars, unless of course, the West continues with their military imperialism.

Kishore is always right on with his thought. However I think his "love" for western civilization may have clouded his mind. Technological advances by the west does not mean other societies like the Middle East, India , or China would not have stepped up and developed it. Non-western societies were devastated by the west and kept from advancement by colonialism. War deaths declined because the West stopped killing each other and their colonial slaves. Majority of war deaths was WWI , WWII , Korean, Vietnam and the overthrow of colonial rule. Now the deaths are mostly innocents from US bombs. World poverty has dropped because China had lifted over 700 million people out of poverty not because of the west. The knowledge of the west was based on Eastern and Middle East foundations. The west used this knowledge and developed WMDs in all their wars. There are many more alternate conclusions of the west's impact on humanity.

It is the ability for scientific thought and freedom of thought that is the secret of the West's enormous success. Rest of the world is stuck in religion and survival issues, no room for inventions. The west is the product of Enlightenment and freedom from religious oppression.

Tell me this; When one had been colonised and enslaved to replace oxen in the field, denied an education & their own cultures. As well as being forcefully religiously brainwashed. This is a Historic fact. And to some extend today many thousands of people from many counties are still today subjected to such western barbarism in one form or the other. Not to mention the fact that their natural resources, wealth, dignity were also stolen from them at gun point. When your country is 110% destroyed how can you move forward? @madmanjusham I understand your view point and that the story of oppression has robbed us of opportunities. The European nations were also once oppressed by their monarchs, and had revolutions( eg French) and England under Catholicism separated Church from state and freed secular thinking. Thought was suppressed under religion for example when Copernicus was charged with blasphemy for saying the Earth was round. Colonisation and oppression, conquering and enslavement are human history with or without enlightenment. As long as you tell yourself this narrative, you will have no freedom from it. You are free now- learn good things and forge ahead, you can outpace them now.

When USA invented the atomic bomb, it had the power to change the world. USA has everything including oil. But unfortunately oil is not renewable, so they had to import it from the Middle-east. What happens if it run into difficulties in the course of importing the commodity? Simple, change the regime, install someone whiling play ball using any pretext that comes to mind: weapons of mass destruction for one. If Xi Jinping does not cry uncle over the tariff issue, why worry, US has China covered: USA has military bases in Okinawa, Guam, etc., etc.

Yes, think critically and you will see that most empires in the past have been created by conquering. Not only in Europe but also in the Middle East, Asia, Africa and the Americas. How do you think China was created? By singing, dancing and hugging? No, china was united by war and conquering. And what about the Mongols invading Europe? The idea that only the west did this is preposterous.

Though it is true what you say I came to the conclusion that in most parts of the world you'll find similar behaviour. Look at the Persian empire, ottoman empire, Saudis...or what ever else you wish. Also South American civilizations before Spanish conquerors weren't exactly peaceful. If you ask Tibetans they'll also tell you what they think of China. Yes, western cruelty can hardly be matched. But it's basically 5 countries you are talking about when saying "West".

@Developer Developed I don't think that it sounds good when you say "Any country that China "invades" agrees with China's cultures and becomes China.". Do you mean that China removes/destroys the local culture, religion and traditions and replaces it with it's own? I've been to Vietnam, a country that was partially invaded and ruled by China for a long time and they did not like the invasion, trust me. Another example is Taiwan. That island was colonized by the Dutch before the Chinese were there. The Dutch invited Chinese workers over from mainland China to work on their plantations and for several decades everything went fine(ish) untill the Chinese decided to colonize the island themselves. Right now China is still claiming that it's their island even though the original austronesian people (and the Dutch and Spanish) were there before them.

Man has been clobbering each other since the beginning of time. This will not end. This is the naturalness of evolution. Man is positioned and geared consciously and unconsciously to prove that he is stronger and smarter than man next to him. So to show strength and prowess they fight over territories, wealth, women. They want to be dominant and respected and feared. The fire is fueled by their inborn inherent egoism and crookedness and to a large extent their godless attitude. This is unstoppable as evidenced in the continuing never-ending fights going on since time immemorial up till today. They will go to any extent; to bully and repress, using corrupt tactics, to persuade and coax, using every evil move and maneuvers they could think of to selfishly achieve their target goals. Peace there will be in-between fights to take a breather, before it flares up again. This has been the trend and pattern. Very few men have the greatness of the inner eyes, with its superior loftiness and magnificence, unfortunately. It is a rarity. Achievable? Possibility? A gift? Man tends to not reflect seriously that planet earth in the universe is just like a grain of sand in the Sahara. Man do not realized his short stay on earth in comparison to time and infinity is mere nothingness. What is time and infinity? The measurement of distances in the universe of up to trillions of light years boggles and deadens the mind. Despite the reality of the obvious nothingness of man, his greed and arrogance are on full display since the beginning of time. Or is this nature’s catalyst for progression. In terms of knowledge, not every man knows everything. Every man is limited to what is contained in his brain with it’s interpretations. The boatman survived, swan ashore from his capsizing boat whereas his smart alecky professor passenger died because the professor for all his worldly knowledge doesn’t know how to swim hence he drowned. Yet despite all that, despite knowing man will die one day, man is still so cocky. Death is never considered in its seriousness. The universe resides in each and every man. The magnanimous powerful Lord gifts that to all His creations. But how many truly and knowledgeably understand. Exceptionally few. So the fighting between man will still go on. Now the big question, is there overall improvement in the lives of men from the beginning of time till now. The honest answer should be yes. Warts and all, the world is evolving and improving intertwining with varying degrees of sadness and happiness. Still it is markedly better overall today than in the years gone by. The wide range of problems and issues will not dissapear as these are the ingredients that stir and act as catalysts to spur improvements, big and small. Let’s remove the toxicity in our heads and fill it with the untapped vast energy yet to be fully understood and put to use. Take a breather from the above brief. Start thinking, reflect, and move on with the reality, the continuous developing of the vast untapped human mind and energy. There is no end to this timeless infinite adventure.

We need to accept the fact that no matter how well off we are, we did not get there by ourselves and we will not be able to sustain it by ourselves. Prof. Kishore Mahbuban, your insight in the world event is most profound. The rise of China can be explained in Buddhist teachings,1. Nekkhamma (Renunciation) a perfection in which “letting go of what bind us to suffering” one example is Mr Deng, he let the needs of his people humbled himself to come to Singapore and seek out the master of geopolitics and growth, Mr Lee Kwan Yew. 2. Panna (Wisdom) the ability to see thru clusters of sufferings, reflected by Mr. Deng’s saying ”never mind it’s a white cat or black cat, as long as it catches mice, Sila (Morality) a moral behavior that will end sufferings, Mr. Xi’s big dream of lifting hundreds of million people both in China and around the world out of poverty. 3. Virya (Energy), the energy of the Chinese, have walked the spiritual path of their leaders for over 40 years and beyond. 4. Khanti (Patience), is the ability to bring about both energy and fearlessness in the development of Sila, Panna and Dana. Dana (Giving), China’s ability and commitment to share prosperity with it’s neighbors both near and far. That’s why China had found a best friend in you. It only natural for the world to be doubting China’s true intentions. First, Mr Xi is not a Buddhist (neither are you), yet you and him seemed to have grasped it for about 30 years. That’s the reason why you have trouble verbalizing your thoughts, rather, your books seemed to have similar thoughts. Secondly, even the people of India, the birth place of the Great Buddha rebuked his teachings. You mentioned that life is an endless learning experience. Are you willing to write your next book on Geopolitics of Theravada Buddhist based ASEAN+China+India+…? By the way, in China, Mr. Xi couldn’t explain why he wanted shared prosperity for all of his neighbors either… hehehe. That’s the irony the world forgot to laugh.

Not only Buddhism, but Christianity and Islam share it too , Christ in his message of charity and " the meek shall inherit the earth " And Zakat and Sadaqah in Islam. The same idea is present in the Bhagavad Gita of the Hindus where you give according to your capacity and take according to your needs from society. ( almost sounds Marxist!)

It is often reported that China has challenging relations with some of its neighbours. What is often under-reported, perhaps deliberately, is that China has more neighbours than any other country in the world. China represents around 20% of humanity connected directly to 14 countries that represent perhaps another 42% of humanity. If successful, a new order in human development, international peace and economic growth in this region would be THE global order, touching the vast majority of humankind. Not something dictated by American elites. Some of them are now almost desperate to sabotage China and its neighbours. Globalization, once an instrument to propagate Western dominance, that has instead led to the empowerment of the rest.

I was going to listen and then he started quoting Steven Pinker and how we all enjoy more peace than ever in the history of humanity. This line of thinking has been demolished by my favorite author, Nassim Taleb. World has infinite potential to blow up the entire planet now, in fact. Taleb popularized the term "Black swan", a low probability, high impact event that becomes obvious only in hindsight. We have achieved peace while building some of the most dangerous weapons of mass destruction. Taleb emphasizes the "concave" nature of harm (please study it). No one can justify violent acts that disturb societal peace. However, as long as these acts are local and result in small harms, then society can continue to function and build safeguards against them. In fact, a society becomes more "antifragile" while dealing better with volatility. So, some level of volatility is necessary to keep people on their toes and never get complacent. When volatility disappears, and as Pinker claims that we have less volatility and relatively more peace, we tend to become complacent in identifying and addressing risks that may be growing silently until they become uncontrollable. That is the nature of complex systems. Of course, peace is much desired; but not when nuclear arms are being piled up by some of the most fanatical states with an ideology of world domination. Technology is amoral, meaning, it doesn't recognize who is using it, good or bad people. So, when you pile up some of the most sophisticated weapons with potential to blow up the world, with increasing complexity due to rapid advances in technology and the proliferation of groups with fanatical "world domination" ideologies (with access to much of these technologies) , this relative peace is a mirage that blinds us to stealth increase in massive harm. Again, harm is always concave--we can have plenty of small events with localized harm, but one massive event with potential to destroy nations bends the curve in concave shape to indicate extreme harm. This is the "Taleb warning" people like Pinker miss and this good-intentioned former Dean is clueless about.

Give it a test: Google "NY Times book review Kishore Mahbubani". Nothing. People talk about censorship in China, but USA has a more insidious form of censorship. In a market of ideas, the power gate-keepers like NY Times can choose to selectively promote certain ideas and banish others. Sometimes they can turn cold on a writer when the message is not to their liking. Take James Bradley for example. NY Times reviewed his early books such as "Flags of Our Fathers", but by the time "Imperial Cruise" appeared that was the last time he got reviewed. Bradley's 2015 "The China Miracle" was on NY Times ignore list. Every country has its form of propaganda and censorship. USA always acts as if it's the defender of free speech, it's a lie. Not a coincidence USA has a liar-in-chief at the WH.

I quote your red selling book on amazon. This is the commentary description to text sale pitch of your book. "The West's centuries-old status as the center of global wealth and power is coming to an end. As the new powers-China and India from Asia and others from Africa and Latin America-rise to the top of the world's pecking order, how should the West react? Kishore Mahbubani argues passionately and provocatively that the West can no longer impose its power and ideals on the world at large, and-paradoxically-that only by admitting its decline can the West set itself up for strategic success in the long term. Mahbubani examines the myths and self-delusions of Western power with an outsider's critical eye, and the shocking freshness of his geopolitical analysis will give all Westerners and political thinkers pause for thought." Millennial generation would image that only a pause to political thinkers. would not give an impact much than water half empty in the glass.

It’s said once there’s a famous pretty dancer proposed to Einstein by saying how wonderful their kids could be with mother’s look and father’s brain. The crazy hair guy quipped: well, what if they came out with my look and your brain? Apparently the dude wasn’t kidding. Now we got one of their crazy hair kid in charge. Hurray!

@@KKAw49 :) It does seems like that, doens't it. I meant it, sir. China files far more patents than the West combined. We may see India catching up. The point it, with the Red hot IPOs that are making billionaires in China like popcorns and with billionaires going from 2-204 in a decade in India, the West is losing it's grip. And we see the geopolitical influence in the ME and Africa shift now. East is the new front. And the EU and US will have to acknowledge this at some point. He's pretty neutral to me. ⚖️

Chinese Conficius Values are still not good enough. As ethic Chinese, I know you want to be humble, but Westerners will think you are low class because your Conficius Values are weak. You dont work in Americans MNS before?? You should say : let me share our refined Conficius Values and believe me, this sharing of cross-cultures is good to brigde the West and East.

America should volunteer to cooperate with China, in assuring the food security of the biggest customer of its agricultural produce, including cash crops such as soybeans - ENDEMIC to China in the first place. Given the benefit of the doubt, in the face of game-changing biotechnological engineering, shouldn’t American suppliers offer their Chinese buyers, seed samples, so that they may conduct rigorous food-safety research testings? Here is an insightful piece of little-known history on US botany: Countless plants Americans tend with pride all came from the wilds of China. “China is, indeed, the Mother of Gardens,” Ernest Henry Wilson wrote in a book bearing the same title. “For of the countries to which our gardens are most deeply indebted she holds the foremost place….To China the flower lover owes the parents of the modern Rose, be they Tea or Hybrid Tea, Rambler or Polyantha; likewise his…Peaches, Oranges, Lemons and Grapefruit.” “When you look at modern gardens today…there’s scarcely one without a plant from China,” says John Simmons, retired curator of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Many are surprised to realize that modern agriculture, shipping, astronomical observatories, decimal mathematics, paper money, umbrellas, wheelbarrows, multi-stage rockets, brandy and whiskey, the game of chess, and much more, all came from China-in additional to papermaking, printing, and gunpowder. This information has been compiled by the work of Joseph Needham and his colleagues in a study of ancient Chinese books on science, technology and medicine. His research has been published in the massive, and yet to be completed, multi-volume Science and Civilisation in China. The West promotes free speech, to create a favorable environment that will spur “creative thinking”. This, despite the fact that more than 90% of speech is far from intelligent. Meanwhile, so-called “intellectual property rights” are jealously guarded in the narrow interests of Wall Street, often at the expense of the wider scientific community, and greater humanity. Is it morally justifiable for pharmaceutical giants to corner the market, with the sole goal of making ever more profits? Isn’t it long overdue for an overhaul of today’s “intellectual property rights” regime, to keep pace with technological breakthroughs? Knowledge is Power. And absolute power corrupts absolutely. Isn’t that why the CIA and NSA see it as their mission to spy on the entire world? Throughout human history, civilizations take lessons from one another to advance, and to spread risks. Is it wise to put all eggs in one basket? “Science is but a perversion of itself, unless it has as its ultimate goal, the betterment of humanity.” ~ Nikola Tesla “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.” ~ Isaac Newton Who did save who? Undeniably, it is the Chinese development of revolutionary printing techniques that brought Europe out of the Dark Ages, which lasted for nearly a millennium. Along with paper-making, the Bible spread. And about 6 centuries before Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg’s invention of the first printing press in the West, the world’s first paper currency had already been printed, issued and circulated by the declining Tang dynasty. Isaac Newton would only discover gravity, many centuries after China’s discovery of Earth’s magnetic field, that led to the invention of a reliable navigational tool, the magnetic compass. And when he came out with the 3 laws of motion, Chinese engineers had long already been experimenting with rocket science, which naturally followed the creation of gunpowder. Could Mankind still be throwing stones, without this breakthrough in the history of warfare? In the West, arguably the greatest work on the philosophy of war - “On War”, is widely credited to Carl von Clausewitz. That’s written well more than 2 thousand years after the birth of Sun Tzu. Not until 1883, two years after a president of the United States had been assassinated by a disgruntled office seeker, did the public wake up and demand a system of civil service examinations that would ensure the selection of most government employees on the basis of merit rather than party loyalty. The civil service idea did not originate in the United States, however, nor in Europe, though it is true that in passing this legislation, Congress followed the immediate lead of Great Britain and France, both of which had taken similar action a few decades earlier. The first county to install the merit system was China. In the year 165 B.C., China inaugurated what later became a widespread system of competitive government examinations. Civil service is but one of many ideas the West has received from China - ideas that have contributed significantly to our civilization in such fields as politics, economics, and literature. The extent of this contribution is not generally appreciated by Americans. Accustomed as we are to ascribe our cultural heritage to Egypt, Greece, Rome, and northern Europe, we tend to dismiss Asia as a distant continent of alien cultures possessing no possible common denominator with our own. But the most famous leader of the Enlightenment to fall under the Chinese spell was Voltaire (1694-1778), to whom Confucius was the greatest of all sages. A portrait of Confucius adorned the wall of his library. “Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” ~ Confucius
