'Why G20 summit cemented India's role as bridge between West & Global South & ties with China'

In this edition of ThePrintUninterrupted, ThePrint's Senior Consulting Editor Jyoti Malhotra spoke to noted Asian intellectual and head of the Asia Research Institute at the National University of Singapore Kishore Mahbubani on why he believes that the centre of international gravity is shifting from the West to the Global South and how India should take advantage of the situation.

China has made the enormous progress because of brilliant and very intelligent political leaders. And yes, with an iron hand,, but also with great discipline and great work ethos. No other nation could have achieved this! The Americans "helped" the Chinese because they could make big money. China was a very big goldmine for America....the 1%. It was not charity they were after! I am a Dutchman, who is getting sick and tired about the ignorance of most western people and most western intellectuals. The sheer arrogance of "we are the best" will become their downfall.

China Progress was NOT FROM Iron Hand, but from 1978 Free Hand, No Communist Safety Net from Deng Xiaoping famously said "It doesn't matter whether a cat is black or white, as long as it catches mice." Half Million Chinese sent out Worldwide, 100,000 came back to develop China, that is where "as long as it catches mice". Today, China PRC welcome Dutchman, English, American, Indian to build & get Rich in China.

She is more of a pro Western ideology and very bias on China but unfortunately, she is going to be disappointed.. She is too emotional rather than pragmatic views..India has lost the economic race and for RCEP the boat has already left the port because India declined to join because India wants to be in the good book of the US.. 🎉

What an amazing and insightful conversation! I loved every minute of it. As usual, Professor Mahbubani delivers all the facts succinctly. I hope India and China co-operate and grow their friendships even with the border issues unresolved. Both will grow in clout and dominance in Asia and on the global stage. Professor Mahbubani is absolutely right about India being its own INDEPENDENT pole in a multipolar world. India should never allow itself to be used by the Americans and Europeans as a vassal or stooge in any global conflict or war.

Yeah, but... the Asian Century is almost certain to be Chinese, rather than Indian, much less Japanese. China has deep economic (BRI, BRICS, RCEP) and security (SCO) linkages with the overwhelming number of countries in the world, and is the largest trading partner of over 120 countries. By many measures, China has already passed America economically and technologically, and human development metrics are starting to show it. In comparison, India has almost no major linkages or trade leverage. For India to reach even a fraction of its potential, huge changes in society, politics, governance and culture would be required, which takes decades to instill. Meanwhile, India is still adding more mouths to feed with decreasing and degrading natural resources. Japan is still suffering from a post-Bubble economy that show no signs of changing. Korea looks to be headed down the same path as Japan due to increasing Chinese competition, while ASEAN and South Asia are all much too small to really compete individually. All that said, if ASEAN and South Asia work together as a unified bloc with China, they'll certainly surpass India in short order.

US can anytime arm twist India in a scenario of India being too intertwined technologically to escape US dictates lest the tap is turned off. @@mohammadashraf9888 I don't think India is aligning everything out of geopolitical alignment. If one thing to remember from history there is no friends and foes, there is only interests. As of today it makes sense for India to align with West considering the huge gap in the economy of between India and China. It is only in the past two three years India is growing faster than China. The more years we go in this trajectory the lesser the gap. Lesser the gap the more India can stand for itself. So temporarily aligning with west I don't see any issue. I detest how patronizing he sounds. Just about a couple of years ago he had a completely different tune; now that his darling country's growth is not only decelerating but also risks fundamental and structural stagnation, he adds India to the mix. I respect him for his shrewd ability to shape narratives but I've not seen a more biased and subjective analyst than mehbubani sahab

Exactly. He is a typical Chinese sympathiser. He can claim he is a Sindhi, but his interests are as a Singaporean. If that means pitching for ASEAN instead of India he certainly will do so. What India needs is an independent stand and we are currently doing the same.

As usual Indians being brainwashed by WhatsApp or Western media into thinking that China is in decelerate mode or stuck into stagnation, I am telling you that India is rathet on decelerate mode having this large unskilled population with diminishing opportunity of getting employed. India's future is bleak. So concentrate on your state. I know Indians talk too much while nothing to offer. Empty bins sound much perfectly illustrate indians.
