    This was the first time I'd ever seen a Williams sister play. It was obvious that Serena was a great player. But when I saw Venus on grass the next year at Wimbledon, I knew they were both amazing players.

    I know Serena has more Wimbledons, but seriously - there's no player/surface combo better than Venus and grass. When she's in full flight on grass, she's a nightmare. Imagine if tennis was like it was in the 70s and 3 of the 4 majors were on grass. She'd be challenging for the most all time!

    I remember watching this match live and cheering for Serena. I had become a fan of hers earlier that year and knew that it was just a matter of time before she started winning multiple slams. But what was amazing in this tournament was that she had a lot of grueling 3 set matches going into this final (aginst Clijsters, Martinez, Seles, and Davenport). Yet she didn't look tired at all in the final. She's truly a remarkable athlete. And still going strong 18 years later.

    This was the beginning of a significant era in women's tennis. The Williams era. Soon Serena had to constantly face the likes of her sister, Davenport, Clisjters, Henin, Mauresmo, Sharapova, Kuznetsova and later on Azarenka. Now almost 18 years later Serena is still looking dominant.

    ArcadianGenesis Precisely my point or rather laughter. She can not win on her own she has to rely on a partner. Let's see her dominate in the singles. She is the same age as Serena. Once she can win a Slam multiple times then we can agree that she is a dominant force. Until then....LOL!!

  • @ArcadianGenesis

    @ArcadianGenesis

    6 жыл бұрын

    DKY _ Doubles is just another mode of tennis. It's not necessarily easier or harder than singles, but it's an equally valid form of dominance. In fact, doubles specialists are probably better than singles specialists in certain ways. You probably assume singles is harder or more impressive merely because it's more popular, but that's not the case. Singles is perhaps more entertaining to the masses (although any true tennis fan also enjoys doubles), but that doesn't mean anything about its skill level.

They both ushered in a new era for women's tennis that continues to this day. So many have been inspired by their example of excellence and perseverance. 30 singles slams and counting, 14 doubles slams and counting, 4 mixed doubles slams and 5 Olympic Gold medals! Say whatever you like, there is NO arguments to be made with results like those!

    This was the beginning of the Williams dominance in women´s tennis. Martina Hingis was at the peak of her career here, but the future for women´s tennis was arriving. Today Serena Williams is still on the top of her game. She still made it through to the finals in the Wimbledon turnement this year and when she gets into better shape again, she will dominate women´s tennis again. The younger tennis players will still be put to shame by Serena Williams in the future. At least for a couple of more years. :)

    Each tournament Serena Williams played in 1999 she showed great improvement, from her play at Hong Kong earlier in the year, in which she played a great 3 set match with Steffi, and another 3 setter with Steffi at Indian Wells. Interestingly, because Serena had a knee injury early in 1999 and stunted her rise up the ranking. Her ranking was kinda in the middle (7) so Serena had a tough draw. Her draw at the 1999 US Open has to be a 10 top hardest route to a major championship title, she beat some folks with some serious hardware on route to the title.

    OLA. ODUS although Carrillo is a hater of the Williams Sisters, that was a fair comment, being the kind of players each were. Venus and Serena went after the ball and hit a lot of winners but they hit a ton of errors too. Serena was on for almost two sets and then she went off and the errors came and it almost cost her the second set. Hingis doesn't overpower you or win with a ton of winners. How many times have we seen Venus lose a match and her opponent just be on the other side of the court.

    All these crazy nasty comments about both players. Serena is the greatest female player of all time no doubt and one of the greatest athletes ever.... but Hingis was a truly skilled incredible player that left a big mark on women’s tennis. Her success in singles and largely in doubles made her an easy HOF pick. Dredging up nasty parts of either of these two players careers isn’t purposeful- in fact, Serena and Hingis are actually quite similar in many regards. Both hate losing- both tough cookies- both misunderstood- both child stars. Enjoy this match for what it was, great tennis!

Given the way tennis is played these days compared to the way they did back then, I think SERENA is the GOAT. Tennis then was way different. It was more of a mental game. @@lb1309 Carillo is disgusting thrash all around, but I don't find anything wrong with that particular comment. It was accurate, the stats showed Hingis having hardly any winners or errors, Serena almost all the winners or errors so I don't see what was false in that comment at all. Carillo is gross though, her worst comment ever was during the Seles stabbing layoff in 93 "she is going to milk this sucker dry, her real goal is Hollywood". She is a butch crude vulgar bigot, despite being a lesbian making it even stranger, has a potty mouth, and only has a friend due to her close friendship with John McEnroe, her ex doubles partner.

    Hingis never adapted her game and tried to improve her strategy or her athleticism to be able to hang with new pace and fitness of the game; so its not surprising that she went the way of the dinosaurs in singles. It happens in all sports, in life really, adapt or get left behind. Awesome that over all these years Serena has sought out ways to improve and develop her game and her commitment and ability to learn and evolve continues to pay dividends

    One has only to watch Hingis's movements around the court in slow-motion video to realize how elegant and beautifully natural they were. In fact, it was precisely this gracefulness that enabled her to hit the balls so perfectly and so hard even though her serves were weak. It is unfortunate that If only Mother Nature had also gifted this wonderfully talented player with the iron will and fiece dedication to a training regimen that could have allowed her to overcome the new generation of power players like the Williams Sisters, Kim Clijsters, Lindsay Davenport and others. And yes, she is indeed a beautiful woman!!!

    Notice with all her high pressure matches - at the start, silence, when the points are important near the end she starts screaming to distract her opponent. That's in breach of the #Hindrance rule, i.e. Cheating. Not to mention the fact that 20 years of #PEDs changed her to 15st of muscle.

    i think deep down she really wanted a grand slam but knew that that was serena’s moment. i’ve heard venus’ interviews, she always says that as the big sister she wants to make sure serena has everything even if she has nothing. i’d imagine she’s more proud of serena’s achievements rather than embarrassed, i doubt there’s any sibling rivalry between the two unless they have to play each other in a tournament.
